Their observations were validated by a 2004 study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry that linked the absence of religion with a marked increase in suicide, meaninglessness, substance abuse, separation from family members, and other psychological problems. Thus, the loss of transcendence is negatively affecting an entire society. It is stealing from countless individuals their sense of happiness, dignity, ideals, virtues, and destiny.Ironically, the evidence for transcendence is greater today than in any other period in history. The problem is, this evidence has not been compiled and made widely available—a challenge Father Spitzer aspires to meet with this book. It shows that we are transcendent beings with souls capable of surviving bodily death; that we are self-reflective beings aware of and able to strive toward perfect truth, love, goodness, and beauty; that we have the dignity of being created in the very image of God. If we underestimate these truths, we undervalue one another, underlive our lives, and underachieve our destiny.

Prus and Grills do not attempt to address various deviant behaviors; instead, they provide readers with a glimpse into how deviance is formulated, practiced, viewed, and treated. Who defines deviance? Why? What are the effects of deviance on others? How do subcultures form? These and other questions are answered in this unique approach to the study of deviance. Providing a conceptually coherent framework for approaching the study of deviance as an ongoing feature of the human community, the authors pay special attention to the many theaters of operation in which people come together and engage one another with respect to morality and deviance. Recognizing that audience definitions of deviance are pivotal to community notions of reality and actual interaction, consideration is given to the interrelated processes of defining deviance, identifying deviants, regulating deviance informally and formally, and experiencing treatment and disinvolvement. This thoughtful consideration serves to shed new light on the mystique that has been created around ideas about deviance.

Engineers, scientists, and applied mathematicians are habitually curious about behavior of physical systems. More often than not they will model the system and then analyze the model, hoping to expose the system's dynamic secrets. Traditionally, linear methods have been the norm and nonlinear effects were only added peripherally. This bias for linear techniques arises from the consum mate beauty and order in linear subs paces and the elegance of linear indepen dence is too compelling to be denied. And the bias has been, in the past, for tified by the dearth of nonlinear procedures, rendering the study of nonlinear dynamics untidy. But now a new attractiveness is being conferred on that non descript patchwork, and the virtue of the hidden surprises is gaining deserved respect. With a wide variety of individual techniques available, the student and the engineer as well as the scientist and researcher, are faced with an almost overwhelming task of which to use to help achieve an understanding sufficient to reach a satisfying result. If linear analysis predicts system behavior suffi ciently close to reality, that is delightful. In the more likely case where nonlin ear analysis is required, we believe this text fills an important void. We have tried to compile and bring some order to a large amount of information and techniques, that although well known, is scattered. We have also extended this knowledge base with new material not previously published.
