Gary R Saxonhouse was one of the world’s leading scholars on Japanese economy. Born in New York City in 1943, he attended Yale University, where he received his PhD in Economics in 1971. In 1970, he joined the Faculty of Economics at the University of Michigan, where he remained throughout his career. The selection of his published papers that comprises this two-volume publication is a testimony and tribute to his remarkable accomplishments and influence, which were cut short by his untimely death in November 2006, following a battle with leukemia. Volume I contains a selection of his published papers that have been instrumental in enhancing the understanding of Japan's modern economic history, focusing particularly on the Japanese cotton-spinning industry. Volume II features a selection of his published papers that look at how Japan's technology and innovation were key in promoting Japan's economic success; how its economy was shaped by its comparative advantage and related policies; and how its macro-financial policies were implemented in the course of its economic growth after World War II.

Dave Ross (1871-1943) and George Ade (1866-1944) were trustees, distinguished alumni and benefactors of Purdue University. Their friendship began in 1922 and led to their giving land and money for the 1924 construction of Ross-Ade Stadium, now a 70,000 seat athletic landmark on the West Lafayette campus. Their life stories date to 1883 Purdue and involve their separate student experiences and eventual fame. Their lives crossed paths with U.S. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart, and Will Rogers among others. Gifts or ideas from Ross or Ade led to creation of the Purdue Research Foundation, Purdue Airport, Ross Hills Park, and Ross Engineering Camp. They helped Purdue Theater, the Harlequin Club and more. Ade, renowned author and playwright, did butt heads with Purdue administrators at times long ago, but remains a revered figure. Ross's ingenious mechanical inventions of gears still steer millions of motorized vehicles, boats, tractors, even golf carts the world over.

After finding a blind boy left to die in a ditch, she established an innovative Blind Boys School in Fuzhou. Meanwhile her husband, Dr. George Wilkinson, set up the city's first hospital and introduced a program to address the pervasive curse of opium addiction. Amy's holistic and vocational approach to disability education brought her national and later international recognition. In 1920, the president of the new Chinese republic awarded her the Order of the Golden Grain, the highest honor a foreigner could receive. Two years later, Amy and the school's brass band toured England and performed before Queen Mary. Amy's story highlights the significance of contributions by women missionaries to the development of early modern China, and is a challenge to anyone committed to making their life count for others. Her Blind School remains a major institution in Fuzhou to this day.
