This book is much more than just a catalogue of genealogical facts, dates and events. It reveals an extraordinary family with noteworthy individuals in almost every branch. Some were wealthy; some were notorious. Their activities frequently surfaced in the courts and in newspapers. Their wealth originated from a London Jewish couple, William and Elizabeth Levy, whose 'disorderly house' attracted the attention of an 1817 House of Commons enquiry. Later generations were able to enter more respectable professions; they became lawyers, businessmen, theatre owners, military heroes, pioneering adventurers, actors, writers and artists. Cuba is widely recognized as a major hub of the transatlantic Hispanic and African diasporas throughout the colonial period. Less well known is that during the first half of the twentieth century it was also the center of circum-Caribbean diasporas with over 200,000 immigrants arriving mainly from Jamaica and Haiti. The migration of British West Indians was a critical part of the economic and historical development of the island during the twentieth century as many of them went to work on sugar plantations. Using never-before-consulted oral histories and correspondence, Robert Whitney and Graciela Chailloux Laffita examine this British Caribbean diaspora and chronicle how the immigrants came to Cuba, the living and working conditions they experienced, and how they both contributed to and remained separate from Cuban culture, forging a unique identity that was not just proudly Cuban but also proudly Caribbean.

The reader will note that in this section, as well as in most of the rest of the volume, the orientation is primarily biochemical, biologic, and medical, rather than pure chemistry or pure physics. Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) differ from all other pathology affecting the central nervous system by their high-flow arteriovenous shunts. Permanent occlusion of these shunts is the essence and the challenge of therapy. Endovascular therapy and radiosurgery became accepted alternatives or adjuncts to surgery. In many instances the choice of the primary therapeutic modality is not clear and arguments can be found for several options. However, microsurgery, endovascular therapy and radiosurgery differ very much with regard to invasiveness, length of stay at the hospital but also residual risk after therapy. The emerging treatment concepts are the object of this book. The result is a unique structured presentation of AVM and AVF therapy.

For the past three years, Control Data has cosponsored an applications symposium at one of its CYBER 205 customer sites. Approximately 125 participants from North America and Europe attended each of the three symposia. The Institute for Computational Studies at Colorado State University hosted the first symposium at Fort Collins, Colorado, August 12-13, 1982. The second annual symposium took place in Lanham, Maryland, and was hosted by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This volume contains the proceedings of the Supercomputer Applications symposium held October 31-November 1, 1984, at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. The purpose of this volume is to provide a forum for users of Control Data's CYBER 205 supercomputer to exchange common experiences and to discuss results of research projects performed on the computer. The unifying theme across the many disciplines is the development of methods and techniques to exploit the computational power of the CYBER 205. Some what surprisingly, these techniques are quite similar and apply to a wide range of problems in physics, chemistry, and engineering.
