For decades retroviruses have been riding the crest of a wave of experimental research directed toward the identification of an infectious agent of human neoplastic diseases. In the early 1970s, several scientists successfully demonstrated the presence of retroviruses in numerous animal species and proved their etiological role in some related diseases. Corresponding findings in humans were somewhat discouraging. Although financial support for this line· of research declined, a few dedicated retrovirologists survived and continued to collect more biological information and technological expertise that opened a new approach to the search for a human retrovirus. The rewards came with the discovery that the genes responsible for neoplastic transformation (oncogenes) are of cellular origin and can be shuttled about by retroviruses, and with the identification of a new family of Human T-cell Lymphotrophic retroViruses (HTLV) from patients with diseases ranging from leukemia to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). An understanding of the role and significance of retroviruses in human pathology requires basic knowledge of the major animal systems studied. With this perspective in mind, we present here a survey that includes general overviews, minireviews on each animal system studied with selected experimental reports and, finally, a stimulating review of the field of human retrovirology by many of the pioneer scientists who created it. A Muscle Odyssey follows Splancreas and some other offal (Matador, 2013), Nephrosapiens (Matador, 2012) and Man and the Liver (Matador, December 2011).Robert D. Cohen’s previous books in his biological series have described the evolution, development, anatomy, physiology and pathology of liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, brain and testicles, and have referred to how these subjects have been treated in literature, cuisine and linguistics. All these may be referred to as ‘innards’, in contrast to what might be regarded as ‘outers’, i.e. the framework which contains and moves all these vital organs. However, this distinction is not absolute, since muscle appears in the walls of blood vessels, gut and airways, and in an internal sphincter – the sphincter of Oddi – which is the orifice through which the enzymatic secretions of the pancreas enter the small gut. This framework contains, of course, skin and bone, in addition to muscle. Robert now moves on in the same vein, dealing with history, evolution, embryology, anatomy, physiology, pathology of muscle and its roles in art and music. A Muscle Odyssey will appeal to readers interested in human biology.

Nephrosapiens is a book about the development of thinking about the kidney over the millennia. It stems from the author’s period as a Lecturer on Professor Clifford Wilson’s Academic Medical Unit at The London Hospital Medical College (University of London, UK) about 40 years ago.Wilson was a highly distinguished man with many achievements, including co-description with Kimmelstiehl, a New York surgeon, of the kidney lesion characteristic of diabetes, and a major role in the understanding of the clinically obvious relationship between kidney disease and high blood pressure. Professor Wilson lectured on this subject, but often delegated this to Robert, who regaled the students with an account of the many disorders of the kidney. Robert Cohen’s work has mainly been on the liver – he published Man and the Liver with Matador in 2011 – but realised later in life the truth in Clifford Wilson’s admiration of the kidney. There are a number of instances in which the kidney and the liver actually co-operate to do a particular job, and also, there are important examples where the brain and the rest of the nervous system are also involved in the general integration of bodily function known as homeostasis. Nephrosapiens is a book ranging over the kidney’s functions in health and disease, its appearance in art, and culinary aspects worldwide.It will appeal to professional and scholarly figures in the world of medicine, as well as general reading for those interested in biology of the human body.

The interaction of neurotransmitters, neuromodulators and neuroactive drugs with receptors localized at the cell surface initiates a chain of molecular events leading to integrated neuronal responses to the triggering stimuli. Major advancements in the characterization and isolation of recep tor molecules have answered many quest ions regarding the nature of the ele ments that determine the specificity in these interactions. At the same time, recent studies have provided evidence that delicate regulation by intracellular enzymatic systems determines the efficiency of the stimulus response coupling process, mediates the interaction between receptors, operates in feedback control mechanisms and transduces signals from the receptors to various effector sites in a highly coordinated fashion. These studies are at the focus of the present volume, which is an outcome of a symposium held at the University of Vermont College of Medicine on March 21-23, 1986, in conjunction with the seventeenth annual meeting of the Amer ican Society for Neurochemistry. The symposium has demonstrated clearly that the concerted efforts of investigators in neurophysiology, biochemis try, pharmacology, cell-biology, molecular genetics, neurology, and psy chiatry are required to achieve better understanding of the processes under lying neuronal responsiveness. This volume includes contributions provided by prominent investigators in all these research areas. We hope that the readers will find here a useful source of information and ideas for stimu lating further studies which may serve to narrow the gap between basic neuroscience research and its clinical implications.

The book traces the rise and fall of Harvey Matusow, a wise-guy, professional informer-witness of the McCarthy era, whose dramatic recantation led to his own imprisonment but hastened the end of the era. No issue so possessed the nation in the first half of the 1950s as alleged Communist subversion in the United States. Communist Party member, an undercover FBI informer inside the Party, and then a leading witness for the government during the McCarthy era--until he recanted his testimony. His story illuminates a disturbing time in American history, one with renewed relevance today. Matusow was easily the most flamboyant of the professional ex-Communists, a celebrity informer who considered himself booked by Congressional committees not just to testify, but to entertain. He testified that Communists fostered loose sex, taught politicized Mother Goose rhymes to small children, and tried to infiltrate the Boy Scouts. He also named more than 200 people as Communists and was a prosecution witness in major criminal cases. transcripts, personal interviews, private papers, and other primary sources, most never before utilized, to describe the unusual role of ex-Communist informer-witnesses during the McCarthy era. The Justice Department kept several dozen political informers on the government's payroll to testify in hundreds of deportation, sedition, and contempt of Congress cases. Some informers achieved celebrity as the result of high-profile appearances at criminal trials and before Congressional committees. But as the era continued, instances of perjury began to appear. Harvey Matusow's sensational recantation in 1955 gave him his biggest audience yet. It led to the dissolution of the Justice Department's informer stable and ended the public's infatuation with the group. Matusow's unrepentant and at times vaudevillian appearances before the Senate red-hunting committee investigating his recantation, followed by his prosecution for perjury--for the recantation, not his original testimony--and prison sentence, mark the climax of Deadly Farce . McCarran, and Elizabeth Bentley, among many others, offers an inside, entertaining, and closely documented view of a largely untold part of McCarthy-era history. The columnist Murray Kempton described Matusow as a truly remarkable witness in the opera bouffe sense demanded by inquisitions of the 1950s.
