In Gonzalo de Berceo and the Latin Miracles of the Virgin, Patricia Timmons and Robert Boenig present the first English translation of a twelfth-century Latin collection of miracles that Berceo, the first named poet in the Spanish language, used as a source for his thirteenth-century Spanish collection Milagros de Nuestra Señora. Using the MS Thott 128, close to the one Berceo must have used, Timmons and Boenig provide both translation and analysis, exploring the Latin Miracles, suggesting how it was used as a sacred text, and placing it within the history of Christians' evolving understanding of the Virgin's role in their lives. In addition, this volume explores Berceo's reaction to the Latin Miracles, demonstrating that he reacted creatively to his source texts as well as to changes in Church culture and governance that occurred between the composition of Latin Miracles and the thirteenth century, translating it across both language and culture. Accessible and useful to students and scholars of medieval and Spanish studies, this book includes the original Latin text, translations of the Latin Miracles, including analyses of 'Saint Peter and the Lustful Monk,' 'The Little Jewish Boy,' and 'The Jews of Toledo.

When Marsellus in the film PulpFiction asserts, "I'm gonna git medieval on your ass," we know that he is about to bring down a fierce and exacting punishment. Yet is the violence of the Middle Ages that far removed from our modern society? Suspended Animation argues that not only is the stereotype of uncontrolled violence in the Middle Ages historically misleading, the gulf between modern society and the medieval era is not as immense as we might think. In fact, both medievals and moderns live within a social tension of "suspended animation" engendered by images and acts of violence. Just as in medieval times, Robert Mills argues, it is the threat of violence—not the reality—that continues to structure our lives. To illustrate this "aesthetics of suspense," Mills draws on extensive and disturbing examples from medieval iconography, contemporary philosophy, and even pornography, ranging from the vivid depictions of Hell in Tuscan frescoes to Billie Holiday's famously wrenching song "Strange Fruit". Mills reveals how these uncomfortable images and texts expose a modern self-deception, and he further explores how medieval images evoked a pleasure revealingly close to that found in modern depictions of sexuality. Suspended Animation also makes a fresh contribution to theoretical debates on pre-modern gender and sexuality. Mills's comprehensive analysis demonstrates that—as wartime prisoner abuse incidents at Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo Bay have recently indicated—our notions of ourselves as not-medieval (that is, civilized) not only fail to prepare us for modern torture and warfare but also lead us into complicity with self-proclaimed moral and civic leaders. Whether considering a medieval painting of a Christian martyr or the immense popularity of grotesque historical tourist attractions such as the London Dungeons, Suspended Animation argues that images of death and violence are as pervasive today as they were in the Middle Ages, serving as potent reminders of the link between the modern and the medieval era.

The assembly of this study started in 2013 during the preparation of the foundation of the Flexible Electrical Networks (FEN) Research Campus, an institution supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Science, concentrating on DC technology in power grids as an enabler for the energy transition. It reflects the state-of-the-art and research needs of DC technology against the background of application in public grids up until the year 2015. Topics as components, control, management and automation, high-, medium, and low-voltage grid concepts as well as social dimensions, economics, and impact on living beings are considered. After substantial editorial effort, its first public edition has become ready now. The aim of FEN is to investigate and to develop flexible power grids. Such grid will safeguard the future energy supply with a high share of fluctuating and decentralized renewable energy sources. At the same time, these grids will enable a reliable and affordable energy supply in the future. The objective is to provide new technologies and concepts for the security and quality of the energy supply in the transmission and distribution grids. To pursue this goal, the use of direct-current (DC) technology, based on power electronics, automation and communication technologies, plays an important role. Although DC technology is not yet established as a standard technology in the public electrical power supply system, its high potential has been widely recognized. The use of DC is an enabler to make the future energy supply system more economical than a system based on alternating-current (AC), because of its superior properties in handling distributed and fluctuation power generation. Indeed, DC connections are already the most cost-efficient solution in cases of very high-power long-distance point-to-point transmission of electricity or via submarine cables. The objective of the FEN Research Campus is now to achieve and demonstrate feasibility of DC as a standard solution for future electrical grids, as described in this study.

Translation was central to Old English literature as we know it. Most Old English literature, in fact, was either translated or adapted from Latin sources, and this is the first full-length study of Anglo-Saxon translation as a cultural practice. This 'culture of translation' was characterised by changing attitudes towards English: at first a necessary evil, it can be seen developing increasing authority and sophistication. Translation's pedagogical function (already visible in Latin and Old English glosses) flourished in the centralizing translation programme of the ninth-century translator-king Alfred, and English translations of the Bible further confirmed the respectability of English, while lfric's late tenth-century translation theory transformed principles of Latin composition into a new and vigorous language for English preaching and teaching texts.
