The Polish Portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie

This book is a study of an eighteenth-century portrait of a youth in Polish dress, owned by the National Portrait Gallery in London since 1922, but never publicly displayed. Two inscriptions claim that it is a portrait of Charles Edward Stuart, popularly known as ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’. The Gallery has always doubted its authenticity and leading experts on Stuart portraiture have dismissed the identification. This study, by a historian of Poland-Lithuania, is the first detailed attempt to research the painting properly. Based on archival sources, it examines its provenance and the connections of its first known owner with the Kinlochmoidart MacDonalds, who fought for the Prince in the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. It considers a considerable body of evidence to suggest that it is very possible that the portrait is indeed a genuine depiction of the Prince.

How can we experience real emotions when viewing a movie or reading a novel or watching a play when we know the characters whose actions have this effect on us do not exist? This is a conundrum that has puzzled philosophers for a long time, and in this book Robert Yanal both canvasses previously proposed solutions to it and offers one of his own. First formulated by Samuel Johnson, the paradox received its most famous answer from Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who advised his readers to engage in a "willing suspension of disbelief." More recently, philosophers have argued that we are irrational in emoting toward fiction, or that we do not emote toward fiction but rather toward factual counterparts, or that we do not have real but only quasi-emotion toward fiction, generated by our playing games of make-believe. All of these proposed solutions are critically reviewed. Finding these answers unsatisfactory, Yanal offers an alternative, providing a new version of what has been dubbed "thought theory." On this theory, mere thoughts not believed true are seen as the functional equivalent of belief at least insofar as stimulating emotion is concerned. The emoter's disbelief in the actuality of components of the thoughts must be rendered relatively inactive. Such emotion is real and typically has the character of being richly generated yet unconsummated. The book extends this theory also to resolving other paradoxes arising from emotional response to fiction: how we feel suspense over what comes next in a story even when we are re-reading it for a second or third time; and how we take pleasure in narratives, such as tragedy, that excite unpleasant emotions such as fear, pity, or horror.

Expanding the scope of inquiry beyond the confines of science, OKeefe shows that the idea of a creator needs to be attended with more seriousness than post-Enlightenment science and philosophy have ever thought necessary. This workbook contains questions specific to each chapter of the main book, an answer key, and a special section, Challenges of the Skeptic, containing challenges to belief typically posed by skeptics along with possible replies.

This book is about the author’s (my) life including my ancestors who came into Colonial America from Northern Ireland in 1746. This book is also about me growing up on the farm. There are episodes given such as the time when I was about 10 years old and had the chore of taking two gallons of skim milk to feed about eight 200 pounds pigs their desert so to speak. On at least one occasion, the pigs surrounded me and ran into the pail of skim milk resulting in me getting a skim milk bath. My educational journey started in a two-room country school where the eighth grade included four girls and me. My educational journey continued through high school, University undergraduate and graduate school where the high light of my learning was the spookiness of quantum physics. My goal began to be realized when I started doing and leading biomedical research activity in 1974 and then after 30 plus years of research and over 200 peer reviewed research papers I was awarded the Discovery Research Metal from the research society I helped found several years earlier. It is important to note that my relative that came from Northern Ireland was a Loyalist Colonel in command of a militia in the Revolutionary War. Several of my close relatives were in the Civil War on the Union side. Many of their graves are within one-half mile of the farm where I grew up. At least two of my close relatives died in a Confederate prison in Virginia. President Abe Lincoln’s birthplace was about sixty-five miles away from the home farm.
