Returning to his beloved North, Caylen brings along his new Hopi bride Aponi, her mother and a Hopi man. The young couple, now wealthy beyond their wildest dreams, are soon at home in their beautiful log mansion on their private island Utopia. Eerie events begin to interrupt their utopian wilderness life-style. Strange, friendly beings residing on the same island suddenly make their presence known to Caylen and his family by presenting them with a wonderful gift. A mysterious craft appears out of the sky and crashes through the big lake's winter ice. A beautiful white wolf appears, becomes enamored with Warrior-Caylen's Pet wolf-and is soon part of the family. Blessed with extraordinary supernatural powers, Caylen is required to embark on several missions as he fulfills his obligations as a Special Constable in the Northwest Mounted Police. These investigations nearly cause his demise and require use of the powers bestowed upon him by Sania, the old Hopi medicine man who had befriended Caylen years earlier. When an intruder from his past places his family in extreme danger, Caylen is forced to call upon forces from his past for assistance. Circumstances during this period require Caylen to make difficult choices; choices that-unknown to him at the time-will affect his entire family and friends, altering their future and their lives forever.

Making New Words provides a detailed study of the 200 or so prefixes and suffixes which create new words in today's English. Alongside a systematic discussion of these forms, Professor Dixon explores and explains the hundreds of conundrums that seem to be exceptions to general rules. Why, for instance, do we say un-distinguished (with prefix un-) but in-distinguishable (with in-); why un-ceasing but in-cesssant? Why, alongside gold-en, do we say silver-y (not silver-en)? Why is it wood-en (not wood-ic) but metall-ic (not metall-en)? After short preliminary chapters, which set the scene and outline the criteria employed, there are accounts of the derivation of negative words, of other derivations which do not change word class, on making new verbs, new adjectives, new nouns, and new adverbs. The final chapter deals with combinations of suffixes, of prefixes, and of the two together. Within each chapter, derivational affixes are arranged in semantic groups, the members of which are contrasted with respect to meaning and function; for example, child-less and child-free. For each affix there is an account of its genetic origin (from Old English, Greek, Latin, French, and so on), its phonological form and implications for stress placement, the roots it can be attached to (and why), and how its range of meanings has developed over the centuries. The book is written in the author's accustomed style - clear and well-organised, with easy-to-understand explanations. The exposition is illustrated by examples, ranging from Shakespeare, W. S. Gilbert, and modern novels to what was heard on the radio. It will be an invaluable text and sourcebook for scholars and students of the English language and of general linguistics, from undergraduate level upwards. The many fascinating facts presented here, in such a lucid and accessible manner, will also appeal to the general reader interested in picking to pieces the English language to see how it works.

This narrative history explores the emergence of one of the most influential Nationalist movements of modern Europe. It explains how and why the movement united the far right with the far left in a militant campaign to wrest control of France from the moderate republicans who were attempting to stabilize the country after a century of political volatility. The agitation groups, propaganda machines, street-fighting gangs, and political hustlers, who made up the Nationalists, all campaigned for one end: to overthrow the Third Republic. The eruption of the Dreyfus Affair (1894-1899) provided the Nationalists with a convenient target for their assaults: the "Dreyfusard" defenders of a wrongly convicted Jewish army captain, Alfred Dreyfus. This work, based on original archival research in France, argues that the Nationalists posed a real and dangerous threat that dissipated only when their goals were adopted by more moderate competing groups.
