Leon Battista Alberti (1404-72) - writer, painter and sculptor, mathematician and, most famously, architectural theorist and architect - came closer than anyone to the Renaissance ideal of the 'complete man'. Recognised by his contemporaries as an extraordinary person, he helped to shape, through his writings and his practical example in the arts, the way in which the natural and artificial world was perceived and represented during the Renaissance.
The book offers an in-depth, critical appreciation of seven major Spanish poets. Emphasis is on the modern period, with five of the poets being twentieth-century poets. It is argued that the roots of modern poetry are to be found in Romanticism's anguished search for meaning. The seven Spanish poets include Becquer, Rosalia de Castro, Antonio Machado, Jorge Guillen, Pedro Salinas, Garcia Lorca and Rafael Alberti.

One of the most important series of drawings in late-sixteenth-century Italian art--the twenty large sheets by Federico Zuccaro (ca. 1541-1609) showing the early life of his older brother, Taddeo (1529-1566)--was acquired by the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1999. Never fully published, the series shows Taddeo's trials and tribulations as a young artist trying to achieve success in Renaissance Rome, and his eventual triumph. The drawings contain charming details of the life of a struggling artist and reveal much about the younger brother, Federico, a successful artist in his own right. Paul Getty Museum to be held from October 1, 2007, to January 6, 2008--presents Federico Zuccaro's twenty drawings and accompanying poems in their historical and artistic context and will be of interest to art historians and general readers alike. In Lighting the Shakespearean Stage, 1567–1642,R. B. Graves examines the lighting of early modern English drama from both historical and aesthetic perspectives. He traces the contrasting traditions of sunlit amphitheaters and candlelit hall playhouses, describes the different lighting techniques, and estimates the effect of these techniques both indoors and outdoors. Graves discusses the importance of stage lighting in determining the dramatic effect, even in cases where the manipulation of light was not under the direct control of the theater artists. He devotes a chapter to the early modern lighting equipment available to English Renaissance actors and surveys theatrical lighting before the construction of permanent playhouses in London.
