Redressing a gap in Chartism studies, Rob Breton focuses on the fiction that emerged from the movement, placing it in the context of the Victorian novel and reading it against the works aimed at the middle-class. Breton examines works by well-known writers such as Ernest Jones and Thomas Cooper alongside those of obscure or anonymous writers, rejecting the charge that Chartist fiction fails aesthetically, politically, and culturally. Rather, Breton suggests, it constitutes a type of anti-fiction in which the expectations of narrative are revealed as irreconcilable to the real world. Taking up a range of genres, including the historical romance and social-problem story, Breton theorizes the emergence of the fiction against Marxist conceptualizations of cultural hegemony. In situating Chartist fiction in periodical print culture and specific historical moments, this book shows the ways in which it serves as a critique of mainstream Victorian fiction.

Mark's Gospel is much maligned for its redundancy and stylistic sloppiness. But is this indignity justified? The answer to this question hangs not only on the genre of this work but also on the life setting of its target audience. Rather than unwitting slip-ups of an inept writer, Mark's narrative repetitions and temporal dislocations are better understood as rhetorical strategies for a didactive oral performance. There is "method" to Mark's "madness," and the method maps his meaning. In recent decades, some scholars have become enamored with what they see as a generic affinity between Mark's Gospel and fictive literature, particularly ancient romance novels. Could this be the "method" behind Mark's madness? This book offers readers an exciting and profitable journey into two story worlds that likely share a common historical-cultural setting: Mark's "Gospel" and Chariton's "passion of love." Analyzing these works from the vantage point of narrative sequence, Starner identifies two contrasting worldviews: for Chariton, the world is controlled by the goddess Aphrodite who serves as a powerbroker distributing political, economic, and sociological power to agents who use that power for self-serving ends; for Mark, the world is governed by an All-Powerful God who, shockingly, operates from a posture of powerlessness, inviting (not coercing) humans to accept his lordship and urging them to adopt the self-sacrificial, service-oriented program of living that finds its quintessential expression in the historical Jesus of the Gospels.

This book is needed at this juncture of the World when it is torn into blocks by ideologies and there is an impending danger of the annihilation of the whole human race and its beautiful civilization by nuclear, chemical, and other weapons of mass destruction. Today a nations status and existence should depend on superior ideology and not on arms and ammunition. Islam alone can supply this all-comprehensive superior ideology to be applied to the pressing problems of the present day World. Absolute faith in one and only one humanity earnestly taught by Islam can alone save the World and the modern civilization from degradation, destruction, and utter ruination. Islam and its holy prophet have a message to the whole mankind. The message is: The world in which we have our beings does not belong to us. It is a God's trust to men and women. All the powers, all the greatness that mankind posses should be ever used, employed as God's trust and according to this law and commandments. Men and women must not think themselves as master of all things and should not use them arbitrarily. They must think themselves as divine instruments to carry out God's trust faithfully and justly. Islam enjoys one universal brotherhood of all human beings and one humanity. This is what the present enlightened and think World is seeking as a new comradeship, a universal fellowship, a World community, a deeper understanding and peace above all. Another purpose of this book is to present Europe and America and to the Non-Muslim world a real and true picture of Islam and its Holy Prophet as told by their own people in order to remove them from the mind of the Western people of these prejudiced wrong notions, erroneous biases, and obsession against Islam and its founder. The liberal attitude of Islam to freedom of belief and thought is one of the fundamental tenets of Islam which established rights of human beings more than fourteen hundred years ago as part of creed as a universal message to humanity. This message is of utmost importance to the present state of human development. If the present day Muslims can intelligently appreciate the message of Islam and truly act thereupon, they would be able to regain confidence in themselves and contribute effectively to the peace and happiness of mankind. This is another purpose of this book. If the Western and Non-Muslim people could appreciate the teachings of Islam and its Holy Prophet, they would see the truth and would be glad to cooperate with the Muslims in the up-hill task of making this World a heaven for peaceful, prosperous, and brotherly living and for that noble purpose to form a universal brotherhood of all mankind. This book examines the circumstances under which aid can contribute to the management and transformation of intra-state conflicts. How and when do insurgents govern? How does the presence of aid and social services influence how insurgents govern? Under what circumstances can aid contribute to the management and transformation of civil wars? The established literature in this area argues that aid exacerbates civil wars where resources are scarce as greedy rebels steal resources for themselves. This book, however, argues that under certain conditions such greed can be good. Drawing on primary research from three very different conflicts – Northern Ireland (1969–1998), southern Sudan (1983–2005) and Tajikistan (1992–1997) – and more than 10 years’ experience working in and researching humanitarian crises, this study breaks new ground through its wide-ranging comparison of conflicts. The book argues that insurgent efforts to reap rewards from aid and social services have in turn facilitated organizational changes and that these changes, while they may have had conflict-enhancing effects in the short term, have also contributed to conflict transformation over the long term. This book will be of much interest to students of insurgencies, civil wars, comparative politics, conflict management, humanitarian emergencies, public health and IR/Security Studies in general.

America in the 1950s was a cauldron of contradictions. Advances in technology chafed against a grimly conservative political landscape; the military-industrial complex ceaselessly promoted the "Communist menace"; young marrieds fled crumbling cities for artificial communities known as suburbs; and the corporate cipher known as "The Organization Man" was created, along with stifling images of women. The decade, huddled under the fear of nuclear holocaust, was also dedicated to all things futuristic. Science fiction was in its salad days, in magazines and novels and in motion pictures, trying every trick in the book to lure customers back from television, including reliance on monster movies. All of these forces collided in 1957, when an astounding 57 movies of the science fiction, horror and fantasy variety were shown in the United States--a record unmatched to this day. Reflecting some of the socio-political topics of the day, several are exceptional examples of their genres. This book critically discusses each of the films.
