Books on adolescence have been written for a variety of purposes. Hall's (1904) two volume Adolescence encompasses most of them: to advocate a particular theoretical approach to adolescence, to stimulate use of a particular brand of scientific methodology when studying youth, to address issues of the basic nature and importance of adolescence, and to propose recommendations on how adolescents ought to be treated and educated. In Hall's words, "It [the two volumes] constitutes the first attempt to bring together the various aspects of its vast and complex theme" (xix), a full survey of "pedagogic matter and method. " This is necessary because, "In no psychic soil, too, does seed, bad as well as good, strike such deep root, grow so rankly, or bear fruit so quickly or so surely" (xviii-xix). Mead (1928) retorted with Coming of Age in Samoa, a refutation of Hall's conclusions: "Are the disturbances which vex our adolescents due to the nature of adolescence itself or to the civilization? Under different conditions does adolescence present a different picture" (p. II). Thus, Mead wanted to correct a theoretical injustice and to promote the impact that culture has on the developing adolescent personality. Hollingshead's (1949) Elmtown's Youth was produced to further support Mead's conclusions-"Is the social behavior of an adolescent a function of physiological changes in the maturing individual or of his experiences in society?" (p. 6). His answer was clearly the latter, specifically the family's economic and social status within Elmtown's social structure.
What bisexual youth can tell us about today’s gender and sexual identities Despite the increasing visibility of LGBTQ people in American culture, our understanding of bisexuality remains superficial, at best. Yet, five times as many people identify as bisexual than as gay or lesbian, and as much as 25 percent of the population is estimated to be bisexual. In Bi, noted scholar of youth sexuality, Ritch Savin-Williams, brings bisexuality to centerstage at a moment when Gen Z and millennial youth and young adults are increasingly rejecting traditional labels altogether. Drawing on interviews with bisexual youth from a range of racial, ethnic, and social class groups, he reveals to us how bisexuals define their own sexual orientation and experiences—in their own words. ...And Then I Became Gay is about the lives of young men who express the complications, adversities, and satisfactions of being a sexual outsider in North America during the 1980s and 1990s. Consisting of narratives which chronicle developmental progression from first memories of being attracted to other males to a subsequent integration of their sexual identity with a personal identity, this book is also unique in its cross-section of men from different ethnic backgrounds. Although each story in this volume has a personal meaning to the individual youth disclosing it, aspects of these narratives can express a normative experience growing up gay or bisexual during the past two decades. For many of the contributors and readers, these stories may prove to be not only ones of coming out, but coming of age.

In this manuscript, Savin-Williams explores the phenomenon of young men who identify themselves as "mostly straight." What does the small, but growing, number of young men who identify as mostly straight mean for our understanding of sexual orientation, sexual identity, and sexual behavior? What does it say about our understanding of masculinity, our understanding of sex and gender differences (e.g., women are more likely to identify as "mostly straight"), and the future of sexual identity politics? This manuscript is a culmination of Savin-Williams's research on male sexual fluidity. It explores a host of topics: whether we should conceive of sexual orientation as a category or a spectrum or as something else entirely; why some men who engage in sexual behavior with both men and women identify as "bisexual" and others as "mostly straight," and still others who do so simply identify as either "straight" or "gay"; the stability of "mostly straight" as a sexual identity (i.e., to what degree is "mostly straight" a temporary identity or a way-station on an individual's journey from straight to gay or bisexual); what biological/psychological factors might correlate with being "mostly straight"; how have changes in popular/vernacular understanding of sexuality and sexual behavior affected the development of sexuality identity in boys and men. The manuscript draws on a wide body of research, but focuses on in-depth interviews with 40 different individuals from the "millennial" generation. It focuses on key developmental milestones, including first sexual memories, first crushes, coming out to friends and families, and first adult relationships. It examines how the lives of "mostly straight" men compare to those of men who identify as straight, gay, or bisexual.--
