Like Anne Frank, Hilde Jacobsthal was born in Germany and brought up in Amsterdam, where the two families became close. Unlike Anne Frank, she survived the war, and Otto Frank was to become godfather to Rita, her first daughter. "I am the child of a woman who survived the Holocaust not by the skin of her teeth but heroically. This book tells the story of my mother's dramatic life before, during and after the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands in 1940. "I wrote Motherland because I wanted to understand a story which had become a kind of family myth. My mother's life could be seen as a narrative of the twentieth century; along with my father she was present and active at many of its significant moments." Rita Goldberg Hilde Jacobsthal was fifteen when the Nazis invaded Holland. After the arrest of her parents in 1943 she fled to Belgium, where she went into hiding and worked with the Resistance at night. She was liberated by the American army in 1944. In April 1945 she volunteered with a British Red Cross Unit to go to the relief of Bergen-Belsen, which had itself been liberated one week before her arrival. The horror and devastation were overwhelming, but despite her shock and grief she stayed at the camp for two years, helping with the enormous task of recovery. Sorrow and exuberance went hand in hand as the young people at Belsen found renewed life and each other. Hilde got to know Hanns Alexander (subject of the recently published Hanns and Rudolf), who was on the British War Crimes Commission, and, eventually, a Swiss doctor called Max Goldberg. Motherland is the culmination of a lifetime of reflection and a decade of research. Rita Goldberg enlarges the story she heard from her mother with historical background. She has talked with her about the minutest details of her life and pored over her papers, exploring not only her mother's life but her own. Complicated feelings are explored lightly as Rita takes the story beyond Bergen-Belsen, where paradoxically her parents met and fell in love; beyond Israel's War of Independence where they both volunteered, and on to the next chapter of their lives in the US. A deeply moving story, Motherland will become an essential text about World War II, the Holocaust and the survival of the spirit.

There has been a proliferation in recent scholarship of studies of monuments and their histories and of theoretical positions that shed light on aspects of their meanings. However, just as monuments mark their territory by attempting to ensure the existence of boundaries, sothese discourses set a boundary between their authority as platforms on which the interpretation of monumental space occurs and, in this respect, the different authority of the novel. This study crosses this boundary by means of dynamic interdisciplinary movements between selected novels by James Joyce, Yukio Mishima, Rashid al-Daif, and Orhan Pamuk, on the one hand, and various theoretical perspectives,history, and cultural geography, on the other. Through the specific choice of literary texts that represent monumental space in a typical post-imperial geopolitical contexts, Monumental Space and the Post-Imperial Novel brings into question many postcolonial paradigms. Sakr establishes a two-way interpretive methodology between theory, history,and cultural geography and the novel that serves as the groundwork for innovative interdisciplinary readings of monumental space.

During the last few years there has been a rapidly increasing interest in neural modeling of brain and cognitive disorders. This multidisciplinary book presents a variety of such models in neurology, neuropsychology and psychiatry. A review of work in this area is given first. Computational models are then presented of memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease, functional brain reorganization following a stroke, patterns of neural activity in epilepsy, disruption of language processes in aphasia and acquired dyslexia, altered cognitive processes in schizophrenia and depression, and related disorders. Cherryville, originally called White Pine, was renamed for the cherry trees lining the Old Post Road leading into town. It is located in the rolling hills of the Carolina Piedmont. The village was spun from the wilderness during the mid-1700s, when Scots-Irish and German immigrants settled the area around Beaver Dam and Indian Creeks. These settlers brought with them their languages, religions, music, and customs. The German tradition of shooting in the New Year with muskets and black powder continues today after 250 years. The area was a hotbed of Tory activity during the Revolutionary War, with Col. John Moore, the notorious Tory who was defeated at the Battle of Ramseurs Mill, living on Indian Creek. With the advent of the railroad in the 1860s, the first cotton mill in 1891, and the international firm of Carolina Freight Carriers Corporation in 1932, Cherryville has grown into a sophisticated, modern town.

A total of 51 cases and a procedural guide for the ultrastructural pathology laboratory are included. The cases were selected according to one of the following four principles: 1) classic cases that were diagnosed readily by light microscopy to facilitate the electron microscopic diagnosis of less "classic" cases; 2) diagnostic cases, those cases for which ultrastructural analysis was essential for the diagnosis; 3) supportive cases, which are those cases where either the light or the electron microscopic diagnosis is supportive and confirmatory to the other; and 4) new facts cases, which are those that establish new knowledge regarding the pathogenesis of disease using electron microscopy as the investigative modality. The 51 cases are grouped anatomically in eight major categories. Separate indices for presenting symptoms, differential diagnostic groups, ultrastructural pathology criteria, and final diagnostic categories are provided, as well. This guide will be useful to physicians and students of medicine, structure, and disease. It also makes an ideal operational guide and text for support staff training.
