Machine scheduling problems are counted among the most classic topics in the field of discrete applied mathematics and operations research and have therefore been intensively studied during the last five decades. One basic problem is the non-preemptively scheduling of a set of independent jobs on identical parallel machines which is dealt with in this thesis. Three different but related objective functions are considered that indirectly aim at practice-oriented balanced schedules. Despite the multitude of contributions to scheduling problems in literature, this thesis brings up interesting questions that have hardly or not yet been investigated. Thereby, detailed and in-depth analyses of heuristic solution procedures as well as dominance-relationships between different heuristics play an important role. Moreover, the present work contributes to optimal scheduling by containing a complete characterization of the set of potentially optimal makespan schedules in a two-machine environment. Finally, attractive ideas and suggestions for future research top off this thesis.
This book explores the notion of the human psyche (‘soul’) and its continuing usefulness in the background of the ongoing and always accelerating techno-scientific revolution. The main argument here follows the assumption that this revolution, while not necessarily being a threat to humankind, is often blind or ignorant as to its subject, the ‘human being’. In the first chapters, the reader is invited to reflect on the notion of ‘thinking’ as a phenomenon of consciousness that transcends merely ‘having thoughts’. Relating thinking to consciousness requires reconsidering the phenomena of ‘inspiration’ and ‘ecstasy’. Provided that such a thing as ‘inspiration’ exists, it makes sense to revise the solipsist or substantialist account often given of the human mind. The book defines inspiration as a ‘clairvoyance of one’s psyche’, and ecstasy as the experience of this clairvoyance. Next, a case is made for synchronicity experiences as a key to a better understanding of the human psyche. While being enigmatic all throughout, synchronicity experiences, both on the individual and on the collective level, help overcome both subject/object and body/mind dualisms. It is not likely, though, that the solution they could offer will be readily accepted by (what is called) ‘science’ today, since it challenges one of the latter’s basic premises, ‘causality’. As a more concrete example of a condensed synchronicity experience, the author dwells on ‘physiognomy’. In the final chapter, death and suffering are discussed as extreme, and therefore relevant, experiences of consciousness. The book interprets death in terms of ‘enhanced subliminality’, and ‘suffering’ as unconscious resistance against maturing. Generally, this book explores a psycho-philosophical tradition, rooted in Romantic thinking (from Schelling and Schopenhauer until Klages and Jung), which has hitherto been unjustly neglected, if not repressed, by mainstream materialism and positivism. It makes a strong case for an intellectual account of the soul.

Growing up in a predominantly black community in Lexington, Kentucky, I was astonished that I didn't know much about the other black communities within the city. To some degree, I didn't know much about my neighborhood. Once I sought information and began learning about the various communities, I realized there are just not many books dedicated to the black communities of Lexington. You will find a blurb here and there in some books but that's really it. Since I noticed the need, I decided I should be the one to do it, and the idea for this book was born. This book is eighteen chapters of research into black Lexington. In this text, you will discover whom these communities were named after, various characters who resided in the community, the origin story of the various churches in these communities, and much more. Neighborhoods like Pralltown, Brucetown, Maddoxtown, Davis Bottom, Speigle Hill, Charlotte Court, and Bluegrass Aspendale are covered. There are also chapters on lesser-known communities such as Frogtown, Adamstown, and Chicago Bottoms. It is also semi-biographical in nature. Many of my ancestors lived in these communities, and some of my genealogy research into their lives was shared within. There isn't a book quite like this in the city of Lexington, Kentucky. Cinema and nationalism are two fundamentally modern phenomena, but how have films shaped our understanding of the creation -the 'imagining' - of Central-Asian nations? Here, Rico Isaacs uses cinema as an analytical lens to explore how the Kazakh national identity has been constructed and contested. Drawing on an analysis of Kazakh films from the last century, and featuring new interviews with directors and critics involved in the Central Asian film industry, his book traces the construction of nationalism within Kazakh cinema from the country's inception as a Soviet Republic to a modern independent nation.Isaacs identifies four narratives since the collapse of the Soviet Union: a warrior-like 'ethnic' narrative rooted in the 18th Century struggles against the Mongolian Oirat tribes; a 'civic' inspired narrative cemented in the Stalinist deportations of the 1930s and 40s; a religious narrative founded within the mystic and philosophical religion of Tengrism and the cult of the Sky God; and a socio-economic narrative which roots Kazakh nationhood and identity in contemporary social divisions, the lived day-to-day experiences of ordinary citizens and the struggles they face with authority. These last two tropes demonstrate how cinema has emerged as a site of dissent against the country's authoritarian regime under President Nazarbayev. Film and Identity in Kazakhstan advances our understanding of Kazakhstan and nationalism by demonstrating the multiple and inessential character of each, and illustrates the important role of cinema in contesting political power in the post-Soviet space.
