A book of American patriotic poems dedicated to our next President of The United States Donald J. Trump and all our men and women of our military past and present. God bless America!
A year that begins in November and ends with October. Although you cannot meditate on fun, this book is clearly about that, I mean, the first poem even says so right there. But who cares about fun? We all do. OK. Also add: one and a half cups of grief, a pinch of Howdy Do and a tablespoon of What Gives and you have got yourself some Butterscotch, and it means you got yourself a tome of donuts marriages, Hollywood dogs fetching bones near swingsets, Jalapenos Muchos, Marilyn Monroe at lightspeed, the word 'scythe' for some reason and a vaguely horny Emily Dickinson - blame it on the booze - and more. This honey of a door weight is close to 700 pages and is not for the faint of eyeballs or weightlifting - in fact, it is the ideal book of verse to carry with you in sketchy neighborhoods and to have by your side when you buy your own island and you need a softcover pillow on which to dream and stuff just like that. When I buy my island, I am going to buy one of these just like this. I ain't lyin'.
Focusing on a period that saw fundamental changes in the nature and content of astronomy, including the rise of astrophysics, Lankford has compiled remarkable data, such as the number of people with and without doctorates, the number who taught in colleges or universities versus those involved in industrial or government work, and the number of women versus men. He also addresses the crucial question of power within the community - what it meant, which astronomers had it, and what they did with it.
This monograph addresses the legal and policy issues relating to the commercial exploitation of natural resources in outer space. It begins by establishing the economic necessity and technical feasibility of space mining today, an estimate of the financial commitments required, followed by a risk analysis of a commercial mining venture in space, identifying the economic and legal risks. This leads to the recognition that the legal risks must be minimised to enable such projects to be financed. This is followed by a discussion of the principles of international space law, particularly dealing with state responsibility and international liability, as well as some of the issues arising from space mining activities. Much detail is devoted to the analysis of the content of the common heritage of mankind doctrine. The monograph then attempts to balance such interests in creating a legal and policy compromise to create a new regulatory regime.
Punches and Prayers is a colorful memoir of a tired & worn amateur boxer from the Gulf Coast who, amidst stepping foot in nearly every state in America, ended up establishing a career, falling in love and finally embracing Jesus in the greatest city in the world. The Ten Commandments of a Boxing Gym 1. Honor Thy Coach. Do not curse at, disobey, disrespect, aggravate, back talk, slap box with, or shadow box with the trainer. 2. Never Forget Your Mouthpiece. Always be ready to box. 3. Put Your Stuff Up.Do not leave wraps, gloves, shoes, mouthpiece, cups, headgear, or anything else on the floor for someone else to pick up. Do it yourself. 4. No Profane Outbursts. Nobody cares how you feel. Keep it to yourself. 5. Compose Yourself as a Champion at All Times. No lying on the floor, hugging the heavy bags, running around the gym, or pursuing any other end which does not constitute the means of becoming a champion. 6. No Food in the Boxing Ring. The boxing ring is for fighting, not eating. 7. Do Not Offer Unsolicited Advice to Another Trainer's Fighter. Ask the trainer if it is okay to speak with his/her fighter beforehand. 8. Know the Difference Between Sparring and Fighting. Sparring: looking to improve. Fighting: going in for the kill. 9. Be Mindful of Your Surroundings. Do not jump rope by the bags. Refrain from doing floor exercises where people are working. Leave the ring if fighters need to spar. 10. Follow Gym Etiquette Change clothes in the dressing room. Place wet gear where it belongs. Do not encroach into someone's space. Report broken/downed bags or accessories. No fighting/sparring outside of the ring.
This quick-change, cross-dressing version of the Charles Dickens classic is set in a Victorian music hall. The Royal Music Hall Twenty-Member Variety Players are beset with a widespread case of food poisoning. This leaves only three surviving members to soldier on through a performance of A Christmas Carol. The undaunted trio gamely face missed cues, ill-fitting costumes, and solving the problem of having no one to play Tiny Tim. Done in the style of British Music Hall, SCROOGE IN ROUGE abounds in bad puns, bawdy malapropisms, naughty double-entendres, and witty songs. A raucous holiday treat!
Unprepared for invasion, Tennessee joined the Confederacy in June 1861. The state's long border and three major rivers with northern access made defense difficult. Cutting through critical manufacturing centers, the Cumberland River led directly to the capital city of Nashville. To thwart Federal attack, engineers hastily constructed river batteries as part of the defenses that would come to be known as Fort Donelson, downstream near the town of Dover. Ulysses S. Grant began moving up the rivers in early 1862. In last-minute desperation, two companies of volunteer infantry and a company of light artillerymen were deployed to the hastily constructed batteries. On February 14, they slugged it out with four City-class ironclads and two timber-clads, driving off the gunboats with heavy casualties, while only losing one man. This book details the construction, armament, and battle for the Fort Donelson river batteries.
Nearly 50 years after his death, Louis Armstrong remains one of the 20th century's most iconic figures. Popular fans still appreciate his later hits such as "Hello, Dolly!" and "What a Wonderful World," while in the jazz community, he remains venerated for his groundbreaking innovations in the 1920s. The achievements of Armstrong's middle years, however, possess some of the trumpeter's most scintillating and career-defining stories. But the story of this crucial time has never been told in depth — until now. Between 1929 and 1947, Armstrong transformed himself from a little-known trumpeter in Chicago to an internationally renowned pop star, setting in motion the innovations of the Swing Era and Bebop. He had a similar effect on the art of American pop singing, waxing some of his most identifiable hits such as "Jeepers Creepers" and "When You're Smiling." However as author Ricky Riccardi shows, this transformative era wasn't without its problems, from racist performance reviews and being held up at gunpoint by gangsters to struggling with an overworked embouchure and getting arrested for marijuana possession. Utilizing a prodigious amount of new research, Riccardi traces Armstrong's mid-career fall from grace and dramatic resurgence. Featuring never-before-published photographs and stories culled from Armstrong's personal archives, Heart Full of Rhythm tells the story of how the man called "Pops" became the first "King of Pop.
This is a warm and humorous novel about a young boy, insulated by the love and wisdom of his family, as he tests the boundaries in a small Southern community.

One day a person is going to see your name somewhere on some piece of paper. When they inquire about you, what are they going to find out? Life is the same for all of us. We live, and we die. What makes us different is how we live it. Throughout my years as a football player at the University of Nebraska and my time in the USFL and NFL, I made decisions that were not in my best interest. While battling demons and opposition that are common to us all, I made mistakes that could have taken me out. However, here I am, still living and still loving. With that love, it is my hope that by sharing my story, I can help someone see a light of perseverance and forgiveness in areas where darkness is present. I want to help somebody live life to the fullest. Or, as I say, live life like another day in paradise.

Learn how and why trauma is relevant to juvenile delinquencyand what to do about it! This groundbreaking book addresses the connection between childhood trauma and juvenile delinquency. Trauma and Juvenile Delinquency: Theory, Research, and Interventions begins with two chapters presenting theoretical models of the relationship between trauma and the development/persistence of antisocial behavior. Another chapter addresses trauma-related assessment issues for juveniles, and several chapters present cutting-edge research on various aspects of the relationship between trauma and delinquency. Finally, several chapters focus on theory-based and empirically supported trauma-focused therapeutic interventions for juvenile delinquents. No other single source provides such breadth and depth of coverage on this topic! From the editor: Disruptive behavior disorders are by far the largest type of mental health referral for children and adolescents, while juvenile crime and violence continue to be major social concerns. Several bodies of literature have converged to suggest that trauma is more than incidental to the problem of juvenile delinquency, it contributes to the problem. Trauma and Juvenile Delinquency: Theory, Research, and Interventions explores: how trauma relates to conduct disorder the connection between traumatic victimization and oppositional/defiance problems ways to assess PTSD in adolescents how exposure to violence, delinquent activity, and posttraumatic stress symptomatology are related the unique trauma histories of incarcerated girls and the problems they have adjusting to life within the juvenile justice system how to develop group therapy services for incarcerated male juvenile offenders with PTSD This valuable book also examines the effectiveness of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for boys with conduct problems, MASTR (Motivation - Adaptive Skills - Trauma Resolution) for teens with school-related problems, and CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy) for juvenile delinquents with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Honor has become a lost art in today's society. We see dishonor not only in the world but unfortunately in the church also. In 1 Samuel 2:35b, the Bible says, "for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed." God is very clear about honor, and the Bible has much to say about it. In the days of old, people were very honorable towards God and His things. However, there is a spirit of disobedience at work to relegate the things of and pertaining to God down to the unimportant and insignificant. In these times, we must find our way back to understanding honor and God's plan of favor on our lives. Honor is truly the currency of Heaven and becomes the vehicle by which the blessing flows. This book illuminates the ways that many dishonor God. It has become so subtle that many are completely unaware of what is dishonorable. There are many truths that, when applied, the believer will begin to experience the blessing moving in ways that they have never seen before. When we master these precepts of being honorable, the flood gates of currency will begin to open, and uncommon favor is released into our lives. Honor truly is the currency of Heaven by which all heavenly business is transacted.

Learning that he is sterile and has been for some time was devastating enough to Ty Jaymes. The crushing blow, however, was in the knowledge that if the doctors were correct, not only had his wife lied and been unfaithful but also that the son he'd raised from birth was not the fruit of his loins. This, added to the betrayal of his mother, who at best tolerated him as a child and, at worse, disdained the thought that he was his father's son, was more than he could stand. When a night of drinking ends in the vicious sexual assault of a woman in the bar's parking lot, Ty finds himself facing charges that make his family troubles seem trivial by comparison. Prison was not an easy adjustment for Ty. Trouble above that of the average inmate dogged him at every turn. A confrontation with another offender leaves him permanently blind, further destroying what had once been an all but perfect life. To survive in mind, body, and soul, Ty will have to change the way he thinks, the way he feels, the way he acts. And with the love of a good woman, he does just that. Released from prison and the owner of the most unique restaurant in Houston, again, he finds himself at the pinnacle of life, his world all but perfect. When the horrors of the past begin to haunt his future, his world is crushed anew. No way could this be happening to him again. No way. But it is.

It is 1949. Harry “the Hammer” Higgins’s first mistake was winning a fight he’d been paid to lose. His second mistake was that the man he’d beaten was the reigning heavyweight champion of the world. Framed for the champ’s death, he is forced out of boxing. Now he earns his living fighting in barns and alleys of small backwater towns. Although the standard pay was about fifty dollars, the biggest share of his profits came from the side bets common at such events. Whether he was supposed to win or lose made no difference to Higgins. He wagered accordingly. After accepting money to throw such a match, he was forced to change the outcome when winning turned out not to be enough for his opponent. The man accepted a baseball bat from someone in the crowd with the intention of using it on Higgins as he lay prone on the mat, pretending to be too whipped to continue. As before, winning a fight he’d agreed to lose infuriated those in the know who’d wagered heavily against him. And like before, these men wanted revenge for their losses. For Harry, it was time to get out of Mississippi. While traveling by freight train back to his home and family in Saint Louis, he encounters a kid nearly as desperate to get out of Mississippi as he was. Despite the fact that a black man traveling with a white kid could get him hanged, the two become travel mates. The journey soon proves to be more adventurous than either traveler is prepared for. And soon, each finds they are dependent on the other for their very survival.
Everyday worship practices--from praying the rosary to moments of recognizing the beauty of God's creation, from being moved by the power of music to praying Vespers on an iPad--not only take place at different locations and during different days of the week but also dynamically interact with one another. The Liturgy of Life examines the interrelationship between the practice of Sunday Eucharist and the many nonofficial worship practices that mark the everyday lives of Christians who continually negotiate the boundaries of official teaching on liturgy. Drawing on the writings of theologians and sociologists of lived religion and data from an ethnographic research project, this timely work stretches the contextual horizon of liturgical scholarship and presents a provocative and dynamic paradigm of Christian worship for the twenty-first century.
Reinventing Critical Pedagogy is divided into three thematic areas: 'Race, Ethnicity, and Critical Pedagogy,' which exposes the pervasiveness of white supremacy and ethnic conflict; 'Theoretical Concerns,' in which authors rethink the basic premises of capitalism, alienation, experience, religion, and social justice through a critical theory lens, a critical pedagogy staple; finally, 'Applications, Extensions, and Empirical Studies' looks at undertheorized and underrepresented areas in critical pedagogy—gender, math education, pseudo-science, global literacy, and stories of successful resistance.
There is a great deal of information on the native peoples of the United States, which exists largely in national publications. The first section is contains an overview of early history of the state and region. The second section contains an A to Z dictionary of tribal articles and biographies of noteworthy Native Americans that have contributed to the history of Montana. The third section contains several selections from the classic book, A Century of Dishonor, which details the history of broken promises made to the tribes throughout the country during the early history of America. The fourth section offers the publishers opinion on the government dealings with the Native Americans, in addition to a summation of government tactics that were used to achieve the suppression of the Native Americans.
From the time of early settlement in Virginia, water-powered mills played a primary role in the state's economy. This work provides an overview of grain milling in Floyd County, Virginia, from 1770 to the present day. Topics covered include the difficulties involved in identifying early mills, the importance of mill site selection, water wheel types, laws regulating mills, the decline of milling and physical remains of abandoned mill sites. The main body of the book provides individual histories of 140 grist, flour, and feed mills, a few of which also processed wool. The histories are based primarily on oral histories, title deed records, and local newspapers. More than 100 photographs and maps supplement the text, and tables provide production figures for various mills from industrial censuses of 1850, 1870, and 1880.
Calvin Riley was born in poverty to parents who were allegedly blood brother and sister, on the island of Jamaica, where the privileged had a constant smile on their faces, but the underprivileged shed endless tears. From childhood, he experienced limitless emotional and physical pain, and at length he began to retaliate. As he got older, he realised that he was moulding into a new person of a new world, but he seemed forever condemned and hemmed in by walls. Eventually he had to lie and cheat to survive, and perhaps only the fact that he had love in his heart why he hadn?t committed murder; it was also the same love that kept him from being killed.
Expanded and revised edition of the first book devoted solely to black fraternity hazing. Are black men naturally violent? Do they define manhood in the same way as their counterparts across lines of race? Are black Greek-letter fraternities among the most dangerous student organizations on American college and university campuses? Can their often-dangerous initiation processes be stopped or even modified and, if not, what should be done about them? In this second edition of Black Haze, Ricky L. Jones takes on these questions and more. The first edition was an enlightening and sometimes disturbing examination of American mens quest for acceptance, comfort, reaffirmation, and manhood in a world where their footing is often unstable. In this new edition Jones not only provides masterful philosophical and ethical analyses but he also forces the engagement of a terrifying real world process that damages and kills students with all too frequent regularity. With a revealing new preface and stunning afterword, Jones immerses the reader in an intriguing and dark world marked by hypermasculinity, unapologetic brutality, and sometimes death. He offers a compelling book that ranges well beyond the subject of hazingone that yields perplexing questions and demands difficult choices as we move forward in addressing issues surrounding fraternities, violent hazing, black men, and American society. Black Haze is a landmark study on hazing culture within black Greek-letter organizations. With an insiders eye and scholars touch, Jones masterfully captures the emic contours, complexities, and contradictions of black fraternity hazing as ritual act and cultural practice. This text is at once rigorous and accessible, theoretical and practical, classic and urgent. Anyone interested in understanding hazing, masculinity, BGLOs, or black cultural practice must read this book! Marc Lamont Hill, coauthor of The Classroom and the Cell: Conversations on Black Life in America Black Haze is a compelling survey of black Greek-letter organizations, their history, purpose, and their most damning traditions. This is an examination of how the virtues of brotherhood and civic service coexist with brutal violence and cruelty within some of the oldest organizations in black America. Professor Jones has produced a vital contribution about a crucial and enduring problem. William Jelani Cobb, author of The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of Progress Ricky Joness Black Haze is an important study of black male identity development. By examining black mens relationship with fraternities, he uncovers larger and brilliantly penetrating insights into issues of masculinity and political identity among African American males in the post-civil rights era. Peniel E. Joseph, author of Waiting Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America Black Haze is a riveting coup de grâce against ritualized violence in black fraternities. The second edition of Black Haze is the most penetrating, illuminating, and articulate sociopolitical and cultural analysis of the chilling legacy of violence in black Greek-letter fraternities. As one of the worlds leading authorities on black masculinity and organizations, Ricky Jones intelligently confronts traditional verities, social norms, and myths that seek to justify and continue ritualized violence in black fraternities through the courageous prism of a reformed insider dedicated to the preservation of black dignity and life. Jeremy I. Levitt, author of Black Women and International Law: Deliberate Interactions, Movements and Actions Praise for the First Edition provides valuable insights into the reasoning behind hazing, a practice that extends into the realms of sports and even high school, and is relevant for not only fraternity members and officials, but the general public as well. The Griot an important contribution because of the skillful manner in which Jones incorporates and critically analyzes relevant literature and other related scholarly writings Jones, himself a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, offers personal observations as well as first-hand views and perceptions of hazing. Are you tired of the church always fighting? As you scan the landscape of American culture today, there is strong evidence that we have a fractured society that has lost the ability to discuss, reason, agree, and work together. Sadly, for many churches, we are a microcosm of this same level of division within our local fellowships. The world will never live in unity if even the church cannot demonstrate unity. This book uses Ephesians 4 as a driver show: 1) How our common identity in Christ should bring unity 2) What causes us to fracture and how to avoid it 3) What Christian growth looks like and how you can grow stronger 4) How we should look different from the world so we can impact the world

I sat at my computer to read a few chapters of this book and did not get up until I had finished it. What an insightful adventure! He certainly comes by his storytelling talents naturally. I thoroughly enjoyed the "highs" and even the lows, if I'm to be honest. I recommend this book to everyone, but especially to anyone who thinks they cannot overcome (much less THRIVE), broken parts of their past. Thank you Rick for sharing. Mona Mellon Rick makes you feel like you are sitting around a campfire telling tales. He has a knack of pulling you into his story and making you want more. I laughed and cried, sometimes in the same paragraph!! Thank you for sharing your book Rick. I truly enjoyed it and look forward to reading more in the future. Marsha Whitley Rick Dodson's book is at once intimately personal and universally accessible. A powerful story of the triumph of self over the crushing forces of ignorance and the state. Bravo! Sean Poole "I was so honored, and more than a bit curious, when Rick asked me to be his "first reader". He said "These stories'll kinda make you see what made me, me." Well, if you know Rick, and what a wonderfully unique and creative person he is, then you'll understand why I couldn't wait to dive in! Some people are handed the world on a silver platter, and still manage to waste their lives. Others, like Ricky Charles Dodson, get handed a pile of poop -- and use it to create an amazing garden. Read this book, and find out what made this guy one-of-a-kind!" Becky Thomas Lane
The traditional October to October Poetry Jaunt ends this year in June-why not? Prose has been knocking at the door for a while, and let's see who's there when we answer it. In the meantime, herein you can expect the tried and try awful Italian restaurants, bats that make you happy, Robin Hood meeting the school bus, Rock Hudson jubilantly climbing the Rockies, and sundry wistful notes and adieux to disappearing friends where love might be lost but sure as shinola is not forgotten.
