Built for nuclear weapon delivery, the A-3 made its name in Vietnam as a conventional bomber, tanker and Electronic Warfare platform. Vietnam was often called a “teenager’s war.” The average age was 19.2, so in the main, the War was fought by 17, 18, 19 and 20 year olds barely out of high school and often without the income, intelligence, inclination, or focus to attend college. For everyone, the draft loomed large in our futures, so you could choose your branch of service or let the draft decide for you. This was the 60’s. Fresh from sock hops and college freshman mixers, young men found themselves in a fight for their lives, from the Delta to the DMZ, on animal trails, numbered hills and in remote jungle outposts. Teenagers witnessed the unspeakable carnage of war while trying to understand the collision of emotions and insult to the senses that is combat. Thousands died there and many thousands more were wounded and maimed. So the hell of combat was replaced by the painful recovery in a military hospital. For me and thousands of others it was Great Lakes Naval Hospital at Great Lakes, Illinois. For Self and Country follows my many months of recovery along with the stories of the brave young men who surrounded me and sustained me with friendship, uncommon humor, and courage. This is a story of family, young love, and the magnificent care administered by the Navy doctors, nurses and revered Corpsmen. Great Lakes was a place of great pain but also recovery, not just from the physical damage we sustained but also the unseen emotional injuries everyone endured but rarely talked about. We helped each other in our recovery by talking to each other about our wartime experiences and how we would need to cope outside the insulated and protected hospital. Most of us had no expectation of surviving Vietnam; now that we had we were unsure what place we would have in civilian life.

Designed in the years following the Korean War and then manufactured for over 30 years starting in 1960, the A-6 quickly became the most capable attack aircraft in the US Navy's stable. The first squadron, VA-75, made its initial deployment directly into combat in south-east Asia in 1965, and, over the next eight years, ten US Navy and four Marine Intruder squadrons would conduct combat operations throughout Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. After initial problems and a high loss rate, the type proved itself beyond all doubt as the Naval services' best night and foul-weather platform, particularly during the region's notorious monsoon season. The A-6 Intruder became a true classic of naval aviation over the skies of North Vietnam but the cost was high as 69 Intruders were lost in combat to all causes during the war. This work tells the complete story of these aircraft in combat during the Vietnam War.

It was quite a task deciding on a title for this no sense, nonsense, makes no sense compiled literature over the past years. I decided on this simple title. Because of my attraction to quotations, to quips, witticisms; ad lib one liners, etc. Whatever was said or by circumstance read I stored them in the back of my mind. I jotted them down on whatever napkin, receipt or piece of paper that was handy. This came about during social conversations with friends, relatives, celebrities, politicians, whomever. Some are mere questions, some are in fact excerpts from my first book. “I don’t understand.” Credit was given to those I could. Not being aware of their “Off the Cuff” statements they bounced off my head as being funny, impactful, noteworthy, stupid or tone fully intellectual. I modified, twisted or extended most of them to my mindset as I was writing. For the most part all are my original quotes/writings and poems. If I were a baker I would describe my book as: 1 cup of wisdom 1⁄2 cup of knowledge 1 ounce of thought 1 pinch of reason 1 grain of stupidity or an “Downside Up Cake” BEWARE: Decipher book’s Littter-8-chewer carefully!!!! “A sam hamich and a coff a cupee”! Pick me up, put me down, pick me up, read me over and over again.
