This book examines localism as a political idea and policy approach and explains what localism is about, why it is growing in importance and how it relates to other themes in politics. Illustrated with case studies from the United Kingdom, mainland Europe and the Indian sub-continent, the book analyses localism in conceptual and theoretical terms and locates it within the overall landscape of political thought. Key themes covered in the book include place, space and scale; decentralization and devolution; multi-level governance; public value; democracy and empowerment; and political design. With the focus on the bottom-up, constructivist aspects of localism, the book argues that localism is most likely to work successfully in a political order where sovereignty is ‘distributed’ across various social spheres and levels of government. It offers a comprehensive view of localism by synthesizing its various strands and creating a distinctive framework for design and evaluation. This book will be of particular interest to scholars, students and practitioners of localism, particularly within local and regional government, public administration and policy, human and political geography, and urban studies. Despite the staggering number of books related to the Northern Ireland political arena, most of the literature concentrates on only a few dimensions of ?the conflict? and especially on constitutional policy and the on-going search for a resolution of the antagonisms. This original textbook, the first of its kind, serves as a comprehensive examination of the subject by exploring these topics and other important dimensions of politics which have been overlooked and undervalued.Politics in Northern Ireland is written by a team of distinguished academics, drawn from both within and outside Northern Ireland. It adopts the analytic tools of political science and brings a comparative perspective to bear on the politics of Northern Ireland. Early chapters examine the historic sources of conflict, analyze the period since the outbreak of the modern troubles, and discuss the differences between the communities. The book then examines the nature of parties, elections, and elective assemblies, before focusing on policy matters, such as fair employment, policing, and gender. In the concluding chapter, contributors consider relations with the Republic of Ireland and discuss events as current as today's headlines, including the historic breakthrough in negotiations, the referendums, and the Assembly elections. The result is a well-rounded core text designed for the classroom, as well as for those interested in learning more about different facets of politics in Northern Ireland.

Today we are pressured by many groups to cut back on the resources we use so the environment can be saved for future generations. However, other pressures of work and providing for our families often make these necessary cuts seem far away and irrelevant, and the spiral of greed and waste despoiling global ecologies seems to escalate every year. But what if there was a way to tap into and motivate the deepest aspects of human nature so that our activities nurture and preserve the living environment, rather than destroy it? What if, in the process of applying a philosophy called "taking it back- finding it here" to the ways that people live, we could truly liberate the human spirit? It is the author's strong belief that there is such a philosophy, that it can be pursued successfully, and that there are already many people around the world who in living by this philosophy's creed are beginning to live lightly on the Earth while living a meaningful and wholesome life. To explore what this means, this book will not only explore the ways of living this philosophy demands, but also reveal some of the darkest aspects of human nature before coming out into the light of what human nature can achieve when we really start taking it back and finding it here.
