This book addresses the causes of rising crime rates resulting from the rapid population growth and industrialization associated with natural resource extraction in rural communities. Ruddell describes the social problems emerging in these boomtowns, including increases in antisocial behavior, as well as property-related and violent crime, industrial mishaps and traffic collisions. Many of the victims of these crimes are already members of vulnerable or marginalized groups, including rural women, Indigenous populations, and young people. The quality of life in boomtowns also decreases due to environmental impacts, including air, water and noise pollution. The story of the Minneapolis musicians who were unexpectedly summoned to re-record half of the songs on Bob Dylan's most acclaimed album When Bob Dylan recorded Blood on the Tracks in New York in September 1974, it was a great album. But it was not the album now ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the ten best of all time. “When something’s not right, it’s wrong,” as Dylan puts it in “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go”—and something about that original recording led him to a studio in his native Minnesota to re-record five songs, including “Idiot Wind” and “Tangled Up in Blue.” Six Minnesota musicians participated in that two-night recording session at Sound 80, bringing their unique sound to some of Dylan’s best-known songs—only to have their names left off the album and their contribution unacknowledged for more than forty years. This book tells the story of those two nights in Minneapolis, introduces the musicians who gave the album so much of its ultimate form and sound, and describes their decades-long fight for recognition. Blood in the Tracks takes readers behind the scenes with these “mystery” Minnesota musicians: twenty-one-year-old mandolin virtuoso Peter Ostroushko; drummer Bill Berg and bass player Billy Peterson, the house rhythm section at Sound 80; progressive rock keyboardist Gregg Inhofer; guitarist Chris Weber, who owned The Podium guitar shop in Dinkytown; and Kevin Odegard, whose own career as a singer-songwriter had paralleled Dylan’s until he had to take a job as a railroad brakeman to make ends meet. Once more, we were delighted to take on the task of updating this text for its 14th edition, having taken over editorial responsibilities from the late John Adams from the 13th edition. In our preface to the previous edition, we recorded the sudden passing of Professor Adams. Sadly, in this preface, we must note another passing: on 30 March 2018, Patrick Atiyah, who wrote the 1st-8th editions of this book and continues to give the book its name, passed away at the age of 87. Patrick was one of those giants of academic contract law whose contributions continue to be read and to inspire scholars everywhere. We are both mindful of our task to maintain the scholarly rigour which he gave to this book as we take it into the future. This edition is also the first time since the 9th edition without a Scottish editor. Professor Hector MacQueen had been responsible for adding Scottish content since the 10th edition (2001), but decided that he would discontinue this role after the 13th editio n was published in 2016. We are very grateful for Hector's contributions to the work. On the advice of the book's publishers, this edition has been put together without the benefit of a Scottish editor, although we have, of course, continued to take decisions from the Scottish courts into account in updating the various chapters. Since the last edition was published, there have been few major developments in the law on the sale of goods, aside from the difficult ruling by the Supreme Court in PST Energy 7 Shipping LLC v OW Bunker Malta Ltd [2016] UKSC 23 (which arrived too late for proper consideration in the previous edition). We have updated the text in light of recent cases and academic writings where appropriate. Furthermore, we have continued our task of streamlining the running order of the chapters, and we have sought to make gentle updates to the language of the book, preserving its rigour but ensuring it remains accessible to a contemporary audience. In some instances, we have ^curtailed or removed altogether the detailed discussion of the pre-1994 case-law which had become redundant as a result of the changes made to the Sale of Goods Act at that time. The rise of digital technology and new business models in the digital economy will invariably have an impact on the law concerning the sale of goods, but at this point, the real impact is not yet known. In some places, we have alluded to the possible significance of digital technology, and this could well become a more significant theme in future editions"--

“Gorgeous George” Sisler, a left-handed first baseman, began his major-league baseball career in 1915 with the St. Louis Browns. During his sixteen years in the majors, he played with such baseball luminaries as Ty Cobb (who once called Sisler “the nearest thing to a perfect ballplayer”), Babe Ruth, and Rogers Hornsby. He was considered by these stars of the sport to be their equal, and Branch Rickey, one of baseball’s foremost innovators and talent scouts, once said that in 1922 Sisler was “the greatest player that ever lived.” During his illustrious career he was a .340 hitter, twice achieving the rare feat of hitting more than .400. His 257 hits in 1920 is still the record for the “modern” era. It interprets human remains from forty-eight caves and compares them to what we know of Neolithic collective burial elsewhere in Britain and Europe. It reviews the archaeology of these cave burials and treats them as important evidence for the study of mortuary practice. Drawing on evidence from archaeology, anthropology, osteology and cave science, the book demonstrates that cave burial was one of the earliest elements of the British Neolithic. It also shows that Early Neolithic cave-burial practice was highly varied, with many similarities to other burial rites. However, by the Middle Neolithic, a funerary practice which was specific to caves had developed.
