Interrogating the history and current practice of court coverage in the UK, the author argues for its importance as a central feature of both open justice and public interest reporting. The book challenges narratives of a decline in the perceived quality of local media. Yet it also highlights a reliance on major local press companies facing acute financial challenges, meaning court reporting faces a potentially precarious future. The book critically examines coverage of the courts in the context of financial crises, which have diminished both newspapers and the criminal justice system. How the norms of court journalism emerged and evolved are put under scrutiny, and the book then considers how court reporting is practiced today, including the use of cameras and social media as well as remote hearings during and since the pandemic. The author takes us inside a major murder trial and explores why court reporting remains worth preserving and enhancing. Offering recommendations which could help to maintain and extend coverage of the courts, this volume will interest students and scholars of journalism, mass communication, media studies, media law and communication studies.

Examines how the military experience of three religious founders shaped their spiritual legacy. It is one of the more startling facts of military history that the founders of three of the four “great religions”—Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam—were also accomplished field generals with extensive experience in commanding men in battle. One of these, Muhammad, fought eight battles and was wounded twice, once almost fatally. Another, Siddhartha Gautama (later to become the Buddha), witnessed so much battlefield carnage that he suffered a psychological collapse. Moses had become so much a “god-intoxicated” personality that it is a reasonable suspicion that he, like the Buddha, was murdered. Indeed, had the experiences of these men in war not been so successful, it is quite possible that their achievements as religious leaders would never have occurred. For all three, war and religion were so closely intertwined in their personalities that it is difficult to discern where the influence of one ended and the other began. This book attempts to explore the military lives of Moses, the Buddha, and Muhammad, and the role their war experiences played in their religious lives. Over the years, some 20,000 books and articles have been written about Alexander the Great, the vast majority hailing him as possibly the greatest general that ever lived. Richard A. Gabriel, however, argues that, while Alexander was clearly a succesful soldier-adventurer, the evidence of real greatness is simply not there. The author presents Alexander as a misfit within his own warrior society, attempting to overcompensate. Thoroughly insecure and unstable, he was given to episodes of uncontrollable rage and committed brutal atrocities that would today have him vilified as a monstrous psychopath. The author believes some of his worst excesses may have been due to what we now call Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, of which he displays many of the classic symptoms, brought on by extended exposure to violence and danger. Above all the author thinks that Alexander's military ability has been flattered by History. Alexander was tactically competent but contributed nothing truly original, while his strategy was often flawed and distorted by his obsession with personal glory. This radical reappraisal is certain to provoke debate.

The care of children with acute medical problems is evolving as knowledge of new conditions develops. In addition, technology also changes to provide solutions to optimize care. This issue of PCNA highlights the important populations, disease states, and technological advancements in pediatric emergency medicine. Although concussion and head injury are common occurrences for the practicing pediatrician, we now better understand how to evaluate and manage these children and to use CT scans appropriately. Pediatric offices need to be incorporated in any emergency plan for both acute emergencies and common injuries. Analgesia and sedation must always be considered to provide comfort for children. Technologically assisted children and children with acute psychiatric and behavioral problems are now more commonplace in the Emergency Department as well as the office setting, and the practicing pediatrician needs to have a clear plan in understanding these medical conditions and appropriate management and referral. New drugs of abuse and foreign body ingestions are prevalent and have unique diagnostic and treatment challenges. Skin infections and abscesses have always been common but our knowledge of resistance patterns and best practices for treatment is changing. Finally, whether it is the pediatric office practitioner or the Emergency medicine physician, we need to continue our important efforts in injury prevention for the future of our children.
