Surgical neuropathology is a challenging arena for many pathologists, due in large part to a relative lack of experience of most pathologists in this area compared to other areas of surgical pathology. Brain Tumors is intended to address this need with cases drawn from the surgical neuropathology practices of the authors. This volume provides examples of over 100 brain tumors, running the gamut from the very common to the rare. Each example is presented in a case based format and the wide variety of cases presented covers the entire scope of brain tumors and offers the opportunity to review both the basics for the beginner or relatively inexperienced pathologist and also offers experienced pathologists the chance to see some of the rare entities. Each case is formatted as if it were a consult case and includes a brief clinical history, description of the pathologic findings with numerous illustrations, the line diagnosis, discussion of the entity, and the diagnostic thought process as well pertinent references for further reading. When relevant, current practical applications of immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology are discussed. Not another textbook for neuropathology! Yes, Our publishers helped us with this last problem by we hear you and feel your pain. In fact, that was our insisting on black and white photographs. We ini initial response when we were approached to write tially protested, noting that many recent textbook the book you are now holding. In surveying the reviews seemed to be primarily guided by whether expanse of currently available neuropathology illustrations were in color (good) or black and white textbooks, however, we came to feel that there was (bad). However, upon further reflection we accepted a place for a book that could combine our career this mandate as a blessing in disguise, allowing the experiences of trying to discern what is known (and reader to focus on differences in morphology, rather knowable) with the perennially proposed question, than tincture, as a guide to correct diagnosis. In fact, "What do we need to know?" Together we tried to one of us (M. e. ) has always been a fan of black and produce a book that would be practical, understand white photography, both in histologic atlases as well able, and to the point (minimizing reading time as in the immortal photographs of artists ranging from during intraoperative consultation). We have con Ansel Adams to Diane Arbus.

Frozen section of Neuropathology-related cases is performed while the patient is undergoing surgery. Intraoperative consultation is used to help guide intraoperative management of the case and to ensure that adequate and appropriate tissue has been obtained for purposes of making an accurate final diagnosis. Frozen section diagnosis is often a highly demanding situation for the pathologist, who must render a diagnosis quickly and provide sound guidance and advice. In addition to the need for rapid recall of differential diagnoses, there are many pitfalls and artifacts that add to the risk of frozen section diagnosis that are not present with permanent sections of fully processed tissue that can be examined in a more leisurely fashion. Most standard pathology textbooks focus primarily on permanent section material and largely ignore the topic of frozen section. The purpose of this volume is to add to the Frozen Section Library series and provide a convenient, user friendly handbook to assist in the evaluation of central nervous system related frozen sections.
