Every city and every state needs a Richard Ravitch. In sixty years on the job, whether working in business or government, he was the man willing to tackle some of the most complex challenges facing New York. Trained as a lawyer, he worked briefly for the House of Representatives, then began his career in his family's construction business. He built high-profile projects like the Whitney Museum and Citicorp Center but his primary energy was devoted to building over 40,000 units of affordable housing including the first racially integrated apartment complex in Washington, D.C. He dealt with architects, engineers, lawyers, bureaucrats, politicians, union leaders, construction workers, bankers, and tenants -- virtually all of the people who make cities and states work. It was no surprise that those endeavors ultimately led to a life of public service. In 1975, Ravitch was asked by then New York Governor Hugh Carey to arrange a rescue of the New York State Urban Development Corporation, a public entity that had issued bonds to finance over 30,000 affordable housing units but was on the verge of bankruptcy. That same year, Ravitch was at Carey's side when New York City's biggest banks said they would no longer underwrite its debt and he became instrumental to averting the city's bankruptcy. Throughout his career, Ravitch divided his time between public service and private enterprise. He was chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority from 1979 to 1983 and is generally credited with rebuilding the system. He turned around the Bowery Savings Bank, chaired a commission that rewrote the Charter of the City of New York, served on two Presidential Commissions, and became chief labor negotiator for Major League Baseball. Then, in 2008, after Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned in a prostitution scandal and New York State was in a post-financial-crisis meltdown, Spitzer's successor, David Paterson, appointed Ravitch Lieutenant Governor and asked him to make recommendations regarding the state's budgeting plan. What Ravitch found was the result of not just the economic downturn but years of fiscal denial. And the closer he looked, the clearer it became that the same thing was happening in most states. Budgetary pressures from Medicaid, pension promises to public employees, and deceptive budgeting and borrowing practices are crippling our states' ability to do what only they can do -- invest in the physical and human infrastructure the country needs to thrive. Making this case is Ravitch's current public endeavor and it deserves immediate attention from both public officials and private citizens.

Clash of Dynasties: Why Gov. Nelson Rockefeller Killed JFK, RFK, and Ordered the Watergate Break-In to End the Presidential Hopes of Ted Kennedy binds together the crimes of the century. Kennedy had a dream for the nation, but Rockefeller had his own nefarious ambition to be president. Rockefeller employed a staff of seventy, paid for by Rockefeller Foundation funds. Actually, he used his staff to serve the 1960 Kennedy election in the hopes that a Kennedy victory would destroy Richard Nixon as a viable Republican national candidate. However, after accepting his support, the Kennedy brothers turned on Rockefeller who had become a Republican frontrunner in the 1964 presidential race. When the allegations surfaced that Rockefeller was using foundation money, Atty. Gen. Robert Kennedy began preparing charges against the governor with the intent of sinking Nelsons political aspirations. Succinctly stated, Rockefeller beat them to the punch by arranging the JFK assassination, although losing the Republican nomination in the waning hours of the primary. Rockefellers misuse of foundation funds touched off a congressional investigation as well. This sounds very similar to the recent allegations surrounding the Clinton Foundation. Most people will be surprised to learn that the foundation is located on the forty-second floor of the Time-Life Building located in Rockefeller Center. Until very recently, the Rockefeller Foundation was on the forty-first floor. It was Time-Life Inc. that purchased the Zapruder Film and hid it for twelve years. It shows Kennedys head whipping backwards by a bullet strike to his forehead, firmly suggesting a conspiracy. In 1966, Dr. Richard Carlson, two years out of medical school, embarked on a year-long tour in Vietnam to treat the many forgotten victims of the war: the civilians. During medical school he was introduced to the Los Angeles County General Hospital, the huge institution that served LA's socially and medically deprived. When drafted, he applied to work in a Vietnamese civilian hospital. His tenure at the LA hospital was the best training for what he would encounter in Vietnam. His arrival coincided with a bloody escalation of the conflict. But like many Americans, he believed South Vietnam desired a democratic future and that the U.S. was helping to achieve that goal. He diligently chronicled his efforts to save lives in the Mekong delta province of Bac Lieu and detailed the stories of the AMA volunteer doctors, USAID nurses and corpsmen that he worked with to treat the local citizens, many of whom were Viet Cong. He gives a glimpse of the emerging understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder and his team's development of a pioneering family planning clinic. With more than 80 photographs, this book relates hi efforts, including the competition among civilians for medical services. The facilities and equipment were primitive, and the doctors' efforts were often hampered by folk remedies and superstition.

The evolution of the surfboard, from traditional Hawaiian folk designs to masterpieces of mathematical engineering to mass-produced fiberglass. Surfboards were once made of wood and shaped by hand, objects of both cultural and recreational significance. Today most surfboards are mass-produced with fiberglass and a stew of petrochemicals, moving (or floating) billboards for athletes and their brands, emphasizing the commercial rather than the cultural. Surf Craft maps this evolution, examining surfboard design and craft with 150 color images and an insightful text. From the ancient Hawaiian alaia, the traditional board of the common people, to the unadorned boards designed with mathematical precision (but built by hand) by Bob Simmons, to the store-bought longboards popularized by the 1959 surf-exploitation movie Gidget, board design reflects both aesthetics and history. The decline of traditional alaia board riding is not only an example of a lost art but also a metaphor for the disintegration of traditional culture after the Republic of Hawaii was overthrown and annexed in the 1890s. In his text, Richard Kenvin looks at the craft and design of surfboards from a historical and cultural perspective. He views board design as an exemplary model of mingei, or art of the people, and the craft philosophy of Soetsu Yanagi. Yanagi believed that a design's true beauty and purpose are revealed when it is put to its intended use. In its purest form, the craft of board building, along with the act of surfing itself, exemplifies mingei. Surf Craft pays particular attention to Bob Simmons's boards, which are striking examples of this kind of functional design, mirroring the work of postwar modern California designers. Surf Craft is published in conjunction with an exhibition at San Diego's Mingei International Museum.
