With the publication of his Gedichte in November of 1902, Hermann Hesse "arrived" as a literary figure in the German-speaking world. However, relatively little is known about the years immediately preceding this breakthrough. Through a great deal of "detective" work the author has succeeded in personally locating dozens of Hesse's previously unknown letters and manuscripts. These have been skillfully interwoven in this book along with a lively and most readable account of this crucial phase of Hesse's life from ca. 1899 to 1903. During this period Hesse worked as a bookseller in Basel, where he formed important friendships and creative alliances with writers, publishers, and journalists, described here for the first time. Moreover, during those years he devoted himself almost exclusively to the composition of "neo-Romantic" poetry, most notably his Notturni, handwritten sets of eight or more poems which he sold as unique collections. Two dozen of these poems are published here for the first time in the original.

In the last quarter of the twentieth century, if French people had a parenting problem or dilemma there was one person they consulted above all: Françoise Dolto (1908–88). But who was Dolto? How did she achieve a position of such influence? What ideas did she communicate to the French public? This book connects the story of Dolto’s rise to two broader histories: the dramatic growth of psychoanalysis in postwar France and the long-running debate over the family and the proper role of women in society. It shows that Dolto’s continued reputation in France as a liberal and enlightened educational thinker is at best only partially deserved and that conservative and anti-feminist ideas often underpinned her prominent public interventions. While Dolto retains the status of a national treasure, her career has had far-reaching and sometimes harmful repercussions for French society, particularly in the treatment of autism.

Like much German-language poetry of the years preceding the First World War, the poems of Georg Trakl (1887-1914) are imbued with a sense of historical crisis, but what sets his work apart is the mildness and restraint of his images of universal disintegration. Trakl typically couched his vision of the end of days in images of migrating birds, abandoned houses, and closing eyelids, making his poetry at once apocalyptic, rustic, and intimate. The argument made in this study is that this vision amounts to a unitary worldview with tightly interwoven affective, ethical, social, historical, and cosmological dimensions. Often termed hermetic and obscure, Trakl's poems become more accessible when viewed in relation to the evolution of his methods and concerns across different phases, and the idiosyncrasies of his strangely beautiful later works make sense as elements of a sophisticated system of expression committed to "truth" as a transcendental order. Through close readings of poems covering the span of his lyric output, this study traces the evolution of Trakl's distinctive style and themes while attending closely to biographical and cultural contexts. Richard Millington is Senior Lecturer in German at Victoria University of Wellington (Aotearoa New Zealand). The chaotic mixture of elements in Trakl's poems is more apparent than real, this book argues, thus challenging the "Orphic" view of Walther Killy and his followers. A dream of unity—one of the most ancient dreams in human history—is in fact reflected in all of Trakl's work. The recurring themes in Trakl's poetry are brought into focus through Dr. Detsch's literary, psychological, and philosophical analysis: the union of male and female in incest from the Jungian standpoint, the union of life and death from the Heideggerian standpoint and that of German Romanticism as represented by Novalis, the union of good and evil from the Dostoyevskian or Nietzschean standpoint, the mixture of images from the Goethean definition of symbolism. Trakl (1887–1914) is presented as a poet whose lyric voice sounded a cry of hope in its deepest despair. Born in 1914, Dorathy V. Fry became in due time the greatest female produced by the Pennsylvania German culture. She was raised in the dialect-speaking home of her grandparents, which enabled her to speak knowingly of daily life on a PA German farm. She earned her teaching degree from Millersville State Normal School and later taught at Fairview, Fetter's Clay, and Ephrata Schools in Lancaster Co., Pa. She was a major contributor to the publication Pennsylvania German Words in Context. The author regularly visited with Dot Fry and Dot would tell stories about her life; these taped interviews have been transcribed in this volume. The stories are printed in PA Dutch and English. German New York is an interesting history of the rich cultural heritage of this community. German New York City celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the hundreds of thousands of German immigrants who left the poverty and turmoil of 19th- and 20th-century Europe for the promise of a better life in the bustling American metropolis. German immigration to New York peaked during the 1850s and again during the 1880s, and by the end of the 19th century New York had the third-largest German-born population of any city worldwide. German immigrants established their new community in a downtown Manhattan neighborhood that became known as Kleindeutschland or Little Germany. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, much of the German population moved north to the Upper East Side's Yorkville and subsequently spread out to the other boroughs of the city.
