Not another textbook for neuropathology! Yes, Our publishers helped us with this last problem by we hear you and feel your pain. In fact, that was our insisting on black and white photographs. We ini initial response when we were approached to write tially protested, noting that many recent textbook the book you are now holding. In surveying the reviews seemed to be primarily guided by whether expanse of currently available neuropathology illustrations were in color (good) or black and white textbooks, however, we came to feel that there was (bad). However, upon further reflection we accepted a place for a book that could combine our career this mandate as a blessing in disguise, allowing the experiences of trying to discern what is known (and reader to focus on differences in morphology, rather knowable) with the perennially proposed question, than tincture, as a guide to correct diagnosis. In fact, "What do we need to know?" Together we tried to one of us (M. e. ) has always been a fan of black and produce a book that would be practical, understand white photography, both in histologic atlases as well able, and to the point (minimizing reading time as in the immortal photographs of artists ranging from during intraoperative consultation). We have con Ansel Adams to Diane Arbus.

Paul Broca made the most significant discovery in nineteenth-century human biology when he found that speech resides within the left frontal lobe of the human brain. As a young surgeon working at the hospice at Bicêtre on the outskirts of Paris – a repository for the criminal, the insane, the indigent, and the sick – Broca had to overcome derision, acrimony, personal attacks, vindictiveness, and prevailing doctrines before his findings were accepted. Based on a new reading and translation of original records by Broca, Jean-Baptiste Bouillaud, and Gustave Dax, Fearful Asymmetry recounts the story of this hard-won scientific discovery. Richard Leblanc describes the contentious process, beginning with Bouillaud, who laid the groundwork for the findings, that led Broca on the trail of discovery as he struggled to bring forward a fundamental truth of neurology and, ultimately, of the human condition. Finally, Leblanc connects the research of the three French scientists to the work of Wilder Penfield at the Montreal Neurological Institute in the twentieth century, when neurology moved beyond postmortem anatomical studies to direct observations of the conscious brain. The aim of this work is to present several topics in time-frequency analysis as subjects in abelian group theory. The algebraic point of view pre dominates as questions of convergence are not considered. Our approach emphasizes the unifying role played by group structures on the development of theory and algorithms. This book consists of two main parts. The first treats Weyl-Heisenberg representations over finite abelian groups and the second deals with mul tirate filter structures over free abelian groups of finite rank. In both, the methods are dimensionless and coordinate-free and apply to one and multidimensional problems. The selection of topics is not motivated by mathematical necessity but rather by simplicity. We could have developed Weyl-Heisenberg theory over free abelian groups of finite rank or more generally developed both topics over locally compact abelian groups. However, except for having to dis cuss conditions for convergence, Haar measures, and other standard topics from analysis the underlying structures would essentially be the same. A re cent collection of papers [17] provides an excellent review of time-frequency analysis over locally compact abelian groups. A further reason for limiting the scope of generality is that our results can be immediately applied to the design of algorithms and codes for time frequency processing.

Popular music artists, as performers in the public eye, offer a privileged site for the witnessing and analysis of ageing and its mediation. The Late Voice undertakes such an analysis by considering issues of time, memory, innocence and experience in modern Anglophone popular song and the use by singers and songwriters of a 'late voice'. Lateness here refers to five primary issues: chronology (the stage in an artist's career); the vocal act (the ability to convincingly portray experience); afterlife (posthumous careers made possible by recorded sound); retrospection (how voices 'look back' or anticipate looking back); and the writing of age, experience, lateness and loss into song texts. There has been recent growth in research on ageing and the experience of later stages of life, focusing on physical health, lifestyle and psychology, with work in the latter field intersecting with the field of memory studies. The Late Voice seeks to connect age, experience and lateness with particular performers and performance traditions via the identification and analysis of a late voice in singers and songwriters of mid-late twentieth century popular music.
