Based upon extended anthropological fieldwork and ethnohistorical reconstruction, this is a study of the precolonical political system of an acephalous society in West Africa. The Meta' are a sedentary farming people living in what is now the Republic of Cameroon. In the precolonial era, the Meta' had created a polity that was remarkable for its size, its relative peacefulness, and the effectiveness of its dispute settlement procedures. Located on the fringes of a regional trading network dominated by several strong chiefdoms, the Meta' polity was also notable for the degree to which ranking had developed in what remained an uncentralized political system. A wide range of data (including in-depth interviews about Meta' political concepts, remembered case histories of conflict and competition, and information on the broader regional network) are used to illuminate both the internal dynamics of the Meta' policy and the influence of the regional system upon it. The author pays particular attention to ranking, the impact of trade upon political organization, and the development of a consensual polity-wide system of conflict resolution.
This one-volume edidition of the Foundations of Contemporary Interpretation series explores current issues in the interpretation of the Bible from the perspective of specific academic disciplines: history, literary criticism, science and theology.
The generalization of QCD from three to N C colors, developed in 1974 by Nobel laureate Gerard ''t Hooft, has proved to be an extraordinarily useful and robust theoretical extension for studying the behavior of strong interaction physics. This book is the proceedings of the first-ever meeting exclusively devoted to large N C QCD. The workshop brought together representatives of many subdisciplines for a OC meeting of mindsOCO on topics ranging from finite temperature and density to the lattice, perturbative QCD, instantons, mesons, baryons, and nuclear physics. Beginning with ''t Hooft''s keynote presentation, the contributions are designed to introduce uses of large N C methods in each specialty to a broader particle physics audience.
The largest collection of basic, clinical, and applied knowledge on the chemical senses ever compiled in one volume, the third edition of Handbook of Olfaction and Gustation encompass recent developments in all fields of chemosensory science, particularly the most recent advances in neurobiology, neuroscience, molecular biology, and modern functional imaging techniques. Divided into five main sections, the text covers the senses of smell and taste as well as sensory integration, industrial applications, and other chemosensory systems. This is essential reading for clinicians and academic researchers interested in basic and applied chemosensory perception.
The Handbook of Nutrition in Ophthalmology is the first general text on nutrition and eye health created for physicians, nutritionists, and researchers. The author provides important links between the epidemic of obesity and implications it has for eye disease and blindness. The volume also includes chapters addressing nutritional aspects of preventing eye disease in diabetes mellitus and other optical neuropathies, making this a unique book.
