This monograph is concerned with overdetermined systems, inconsistent systems with more equations than unknowns, in scientific data reduction. It is not a text on statistics, numerical methods, or matrix cOmputations, although elements of all three, especially the latter, enter into the discussion. The reader I have in mind is a scientist or engineer who has gathered data that he or she wants to model by a mathematical system, perhaps linear, perhaps nonlinear, and solve to obtain the best estimates, in some sense of the term "best," of various parameters. Because the calculations will be performed on a digital computer, the first chapter discusses floating-point numbers and their effect on mathematical operations. The chapter ends with some methods for accurately summing floating-point numbers, an operation frequently required in numerical work and one often done by the worst possible method, recursive summation. Chapter 2 gives a brief review of linear algebra and includes vector and matrix norms and condition numbers of matrices and linear systems. ' Chapter 3 presents some ideas for manipulating sparse matrices. Frequently, time or memory can be saved by use of sparse matrix techniques. The subject is extensive and the chapter is only indicative of the many techniques available. Although Chapter 3 is somewhat extraneous to the rest of the book, Chapter 5, on linear least squares, makes use of the compressed storage mode for the symmetric matrices discussed in Chapter 3.

The history of the windmill is focused on North Western Europe, drawing on the origins of the first horizontal windmills in Persia, Tibet and China. Industrial applications such as in textiles, papermaking and mining are examined. Gradually, windmills were improved but were finally eclipsed by steam engines in the nineteenth century due to increased levels of industrialisation. The book concludes with a look at the recent re-emergence of windpower as a viable source of power in the wake of the energy crisis.

When I was maybe nine or ten years old, I did a double take on a photograph of myself because I didn’t like what I saw ... but the picture did not improve: my shoulders were drooping and my chest looked a little sunken. From that moment on, I made a conscious effort to improve my posture by standing up tall with my shoulders back and my chest out. Over many years, this initial desire to improve myself has evolved to include more than just the way I look; these days, I’m working on my mind and spirit as well as my body, trying to elevate myself in any way I can. My writing is part of this. When I write about an experience or a memory, I’m able to slow everything down, think about what happened from a new angle, maybe even learn from it. Each of the thirty-six stories in this book is a step I have built to help me climb. I still have a long way to go, but I’ve definitely made progress. Join me on my journey. I trust the steps will hold you too. I don’t have all the answers, but it’s nice to know I have kindred spirits out there who are climbing with me. Together, we can repair the world.
