During the 1840s and 1850s, many of the pioneers and much of the supplies they needed for overland trips west from Independence on the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe Trails arrived at Wayne City Landing, the steamboat port on the Missouri River in what is now Sugar Creek. In 1892, Arthur Stillwell, a Kansas City railroad man, founded Fairmount Park, a first-class pleasure resort in the southern part of Sugar Creek that would be popular until the 1930s. Standard Oil of Indiana purchased land at the north end of Sugar Creek in 1903 and built a major refinery that would dominate the town until it ceased operations in 1982. Sugar Creek's early growth evolved around the refinery, and in 1920, the Jackson County Court established the City of Sugar Creek. This book illustrates the history of Sugar Creek in more than 200 vintage images, detailing the people, businesses, churches, schools, and community services that have shaped the town's past.

A boom in the production and export of cotton made Iran the richest region of the Islamic caliphate in the ninth and tenth centuries. Yet in the eleventh century, Iran's impressive agricultural economy entered a steep decline, bringing the country's primacy to an end. Richard W. Bulliet advances several provocative theses to explain these hitherto unrecognized historical events. According to Bulliet, the boom in cotton production directly paralleled the spread of Islam, and Iran's agricultural decline stemmed from a significant cooling of the climate that lasted for over a century. The latter phenomenon also prompted Turkish nomadic tribes to enter Iran for the first time, establishing a political dominance that would last for centuries. Substantiating his argument with innovative quantitative research and recent scientific discoveries, Bulliet first establishes the relationship between Iran's cotton industry and Islam and then outlines the evidence for what he terms the "Big Chill." Turning to the story of the Turks, he focuses on the lucrative but temperature-sensitive industry of cross-breeding one-humped and two-humped camels. The successful reduction of urban air pollution is among the notable achievements of modern environmental law and policy. This remarkable study, focusing on two of the world’s most prominent cases, explores how people in the areas of Los Angeles and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) established governance processes to combat air pollution and how the major actors in each area worked to make their region a better place to live. Employing the expertise of teams of knowledgeable environmental law experts from both China and the United States, the authors identify and analyze similarities and differences in the respective legal and policy experiences as actors succeeded in greatly improving the air quality of their areas. Underpinned by a model of environmental governance developed by the authors and presenting an abundance of first-hand information from both areas, the study finds that, despite broad political and cultural differences in both regions, three political relations in governance processes emerge as enablers of effective reduction of air pollution: relation between regulators and the regulated communities; relation between all the supervisory political entities, such as legislatures, etc., and regulators; and relation between civil society (including news media and nongovernmental organizations) and polluters. Specific areas of regulation covered include transportation, ports, energy efficiency, utilities, oil refineries, building efficiency, renewable energy, coal dependency, and optimizing energy structure. With its sound, replicable model, its solid findings, and its enlightening conclusions, this incomparable work will prove of immeasurable value to administrative authorities and counsel worldwide engaged in combating air pollution. Moreover, its creative methodology is a signal contribution to the comparative study of environmental law and policy.
