In highly personal pieces that are both memoirs of the author's own imperfect experiences as a young doctor and "letters" ostensibly addressed to medical hopefuls, he brings to light both the brutality and beauty of the profession in which saving and losing lives is all in a day's work. A surgeon, he shows, must be at once infallible and infallibly human- a mortal miracle worker whose task is to overwhelm and control the body, but "kindly and gravely, and without condescension."--Publishers description.
Like many young people in our late teens who are constantly aware of the possiblilty of a war that may involve us being called into service, we are very disturbed. It is difficult for us to rationalize the reason for wars. In our schooling we will learn of the great wars in history, but it will be considered an educational process and accepted as such. If we are fortunate, many of us have parents that love us and help us understand the need for love of one another; the need for a good education, perhaps participation in sports or other activities offering growth, and the understanding of others is important. All this seems very logical but in today's world, with the media hungry for news to hold their positions in ratings, we young people cannot avoid being exposed to the ugliness of war and the deaths of so many young people. This is always camouflaged with the glory and praise of those who gave their lives for the preservation of liberty, the pursuit of freedom for their country and to be proud to have been a part of this glorious opportunity.
