The author writes of this book: "'What lead you to impersonate great biologists?' is a question often asked of me. My answer varies depending upon the interviewer. Sometimes I cite my interest in biographies of distinguished scientists initiated by a reading of Vallery-Radot's The Life of Pasteur as a teenage and furthered by a superb college course on the history of biology. Another answer: my love of the theater, more from the balcony than on the stage as a ham actor. My most frequent reply, however, credits this instructional innovation to the students in my Berkeley course in general biology (Zoology 10), who began to show, in the late sixties, their dissatisfaction with the lecture system. "I gave serious thought to the problem of communicating biological information with greater impact. One morning in the shower I was stuck not only by the spray but also by an idea: dress up and make up as some of the great biologists and present their discoveries and thoughts in their own words. In addition to expounding their scientific work, portray them as persons with hopes and ambitions, frustration over failure, and joy from success. I chose Darwin, Mendel, Harvey, and Pasteur, who would probably be on the most lists of great biologists, and two lesser-known scientists: William Beaumont, pre-Civil War Army surgeon who studied gastic digestion in the stomach of a fur-trapper, Alexis St. Martin; and Hans Spemann, 1935 Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine, who discovered the organizer principle in embryonic development. The results of the innovation, which I call guest lecturers, were gratifying. "Late five of the lectures, in abbreviated form, were recorded on motion picture film (available through the Media Center of the University of California, Berkeley). Then it was suggested that a much wider audience should be reached through publication of the lectures in book form, illustrated with photographs of the 'guest lecturers' in action and with drawings, charts, maps, and reproductions of lantern slides." This book gives an account of the individual works of one of the greatest composers. The first volume of a two-volume study of the music of J. S. Bach covers the earlier part of his composing career, 1695-1717. By studying the music chronologically a coherent picture of the composer's creative development emerges, drawing together all the strands of the individual repertoires (e.g. the cantatas, the organ music, the keyboard music). The volume is divided into two parts, covering the early works and the mature Weimar compositions respectively. Each part deals with four categories of composition in turn: large-scale keyboard works; preludes, fantasias, and fugues; organ chorales; and cantatas. Within each category, the discussion is prefaced by a list of the works to be considered, together with details of their original titles, catalogue numbers, and earliest sources. The study is thus usable as a handbook on Bach's works as well as a connected study of his creative development. As indicated by the subtitle Music to Delight the Spirit,, borrowed from Bach's own title-pages, Richard Jones draws attention to another important aspect of the book: not only is it a study of style and technique but a work of criticism, an analytical evaluation of Bach's music and an appreciation of its extraordinary qualities. It also takes account of the remarkable advances in Bach scholarship that have been made over the last 50 years, including the many studies that have appeared relating to various aspects of Bach's early music, such as the varied influences to which he was subjected and the problematic issues of dating and authenticity that arise. My first encounter with the theory of harmony was during my last year at school (1975). This fascinating system of rules crystallized the intuitive knowledge of harmony I had acquired from years of piano playing, and facilitated memorization, transcription, arrangement and composition. For the next five years, I studied music (piano) and science (Physics) at the Univer sity of Melbourne. This "strange combination" started me wondering about the origins of those music theory "rules". To what extent were they determined or influenced by physics? mathematics? physiology? conditioning? In 1981, the supervisor of my honours project in musical acoustics, Neville Fletcher, showed me an article entitled "Pitch, consonance, and harmony", by a certain Ernst Terhardt of the Technical University of Munich. By that stage, I had devoured a considerable amount of (largely unsatisfactory) material on the nature and origins of harmony, which enabled me to recognize the significance of Terhardt's article. But it was not until I arrived in Munich the following year (on Terhardt's invitation) that I began to appreciate the conse quences of his "psychoacoustical" approach for the theory of harmony. That is what this book is about. The book presents Terhardt's work against the broad context of music perception research, past and present. Music perception is a multidisciplinary mixture of physics, psychology and music. Where different theoretical ap proaches appear contradictory, I try to show instead that they complement and enrich one another.
