To be able to pry apart: / this is object, this is subject / even though (confusion begins) / he can be both. Difficult then / to stand at the mirror and reflect: / I am this. This is what I am." Some Dance is a meditation on stories, the intersection of stories, of things made up, of things imagined, and of things lived - perhaps. Tricks played by memory, scrambling events from life with fiction, are a constant. Ricardo Sternberg seeks a fixed point from which to understand the world, but finds no resolution save for another poem. Everything is in flux, unstable, and leads to unexpected places: a commune in the 1960s, a drunken doctor who deals in contraband, a palm reader, a classroom visited by Jesus, a dance in a darkened kitchen. A lively collection that turns towards the commonplace, classical, and strange, Some Dance masterfully balances serious thought, big ideas, and good humour through surprising, elegant, and colloquial expressions.

This version differs from the Portuguese edition only in a few additions and many minor corrections. Naturally, this edition raised the question of whether to use the opportunity to introduce major additions. In a book like this, ending in the heart of a rich research field, there are always further topics that should arguably be included. Subjects like geodesic flows or the role of Hausdorff dimension in con temporary ergodic theory are two of the most tempting gaps to fill. However, I let it stand with practically the same boundaries as the original version, still believing these adequately fulfill its goal of presenting the basic knowledge required to approach the research area of Differentiable Ergodic Theory. I wish to thank Dr. Levy for the excellent translation and several of the correc tions mentioned above. Rio de Janeiro, January 1987 Ricardo Mane Introduction This book is an introduction to ergodic theory, with emphasis on its relationship with the theory of differentiable dynamical systems, which is sometimes called differentiable ergodic theory. Chapter 0, a quick review of measure theory, is included as a reference. Proofs are omitted, except for some results on derivatives with respect to sequences of partitions, which are not generally found in standard texts on measure and integration theory and tend to be lost within a much wider framework in more advanced texts.
Analogical thinking lies at the core of human cognition, pervading from the most mundane to the most extraordinary forms of creativity. By connecting poorly understood phenomena to learned situations whose structure is well articulated, it allows reasoners to expand the boundaries of their knowledge. The first part of the book begins by fleshing out the debate around whether our cognitive system is well-suited for creative analogizing, and ends by reviewing a series of studies that were designed to decide between the experimental and the naturalistic accounts. The studies confirm the psychological reality of the surface bias revealed by most experimental studies, thus claiming for realistic solutions to the problem of inert knowledge. The second part of the book delves into cognitive interventions, while maintaining an emphasis on the interplay between psychological modeling and instructional applications. It begins by reviewing the first generation of instructional interventions aimed at improving the later retrievability of educational contents by highlighting their abstract structure. Subsequent chapters discuss the most realistic avenues for devising easily-executable and widely-applicable ways of enhancing access to stored knowledge that would otherwise remain inert. The authors review results from studies from both others and their own lab that speak of the promise of these approaches.

This volume in the Essentials in Cytopathology book series will focus on the cytopathology of lymph nodes. It will address the topic of fine needle aspiration of lymph nodes and fulfill the need for an easy-to-use and authoritative synopsis of lymph node cytopathology. The book with adopt an algorithmic diagnostic approach, starting from the cytomorphologic pattern of the lymph node aspirate. The focus will be on the appropriate and effective use of ancillary studies (immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, fluorescence in situ hybridization and molecular techniques) and integration of their results into the final diagnosis. The book will present the cytopathologic features and differential diagnoses for the major cytologic patterns in lymph node fine needle aspiration. The entities typically falling within each of these patterns will be discussed with illustration of the spectrum of cytologic features, differential diagnoses and pitfalls. The book will cover the full spectrum of benign and malignant primary conditions of the lymph nodes, with emphasis on common disorders. Discussion of metastatic conditions will be restricted to those that are relevant to the differential diagnosis of primary lymphoid disorders. This book is designed as an easy to use resource that fits into the lab coat pocket, ideal for portability and quick reference. It is heavily illustrated and contains useful algorithms that guide the reader through the differential diagnosis of common and uncommon entities encountered in lymph node aspirates. The accompanying text follows an easy to use pattern-based outline. A useful resource for every pathologist, cytopathologist, fellow and trainee.
Two Wings: She would drift into the kitchen/trailing fragments of a hymn that spoke of God,/a river, the pair of golden wings/that would be hers on Judgement Day/and were you to look at her then/you might well decide your best bet/for a meal would be to eat out: //she was blind and appeared a little lost/in her tile and linoleum kingdom./But she vaguely addressed the garlic,/the onion, the tomato and between her hands/rubbed a sprig of rosemary over olive oil./A fragrance then arose and you decided you had best sit down. And you did.//Did you fall asleep? Did you dream?/You awoke to the smart snap of sails:/the billowing of a tablecloth./She returned and a generous bowl/was placed in front of you. /Then she crossed her arms and waited:/her prayer done, your eating was its Amen. If Map of Dreams ended with the poet unable to reach his dreamt island, here he returns to the world around him and finds it full: a blind cook clattering in her kitchen, a great-uncle raising birds behind locked doors, lovers writing to each other out of touch and out of synch. He sees as well a world riven by magic: Noah's wife and her tears, a broom yearning for a dance, an angel inventing the blues. Like the mime in "Marcel," Bamboo Church sets a lavish table "in the house of the hungry.
This book provides current information for a judicious use of conventional and molecular ICC markers performed in cytologic samples to help in the cost-effective diagnosis of superficial and deep-seated masses. By providing both an eminently practical information for appropriate technical preparation of cytologic samples and a systematic exposure of the immunophenotypic and biomolecular characteristics of normal and pathological cells, the reported morphological-molecular findings highlight the characteristics of different lesions that are useful for the practical solution of a particular differential diagnosis. Chapters include description of the cytomorphology followed by a practical ICC staining pattern for each entity. Cytologic materials include serous effusions, exfoliative cytology, fine needle aspiration cytology of superficial and deep-seated masses, and squash preparation from central nervous system masses. Practical Immunocytochemistry in Diagnostic Cytology serves as a valuable resource towards understanding critical differences between tests performed on tissue samples and those carried out on cytologic samples.
This book presents the results of the most complete and updated assessment of cognitive resources of students in Latin America: the Study of Latin American Intelligence (SLATINT). During four years, top researchers of the region used a standardized set of cognitive measures to assess 4,000 students aged between 14 and 15 years from six countries: Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Peru. The data collected and now analyzed in this volume is a first step to understand the human cognitive capital of the region, a crucial resource for any country today. Intelligence research has shown that the cognitive skills of a population are strongly associated with the school performance of its students and the development of a nation. This makes Intelligence Measurement and School Performance in Latin America a valuable tool both for Latin American researchers and authorities engaged in the improvement of each country’s human resources and for psychologists, educators and other social scientists dedicated to the study of the impact of intelligence in the development of nations.
This book provides a broad introduction to the fascinating subject of sleep, a behavioral state in which human beings spend a third of their life span, and a topic which interests not only the specialist but also the layperson. It may be used as an advanced textbook by graduate students and even ambitious undergraduates in biology, medicine and psychology. It is also suitable for the expert hypnologist who wishes to have an overview of some of the classic and fundamental achievements in sleep research. The explanations in the book are detailed enough to capture the interest of the curious reader, and complete enough to provide the necessary background material needed to go further into the subject and explore the research literature.
Practical Urologic Cytopathology provides the essentials for the cytologic diagnosis of disorders of the urinary tract illustrated with approximately 300 color photomicrographs. The text combines the recent with the classic and standard concepts, particularly in the classification of urothelial tumors. Urothelial tumors are covered contrasting the 1973 and 1999 WHO classification and the 1998 WHO/ISUP (World Health Organization/International Society of Urological Pathologists). The author provides a summary of "key concepts" of each described entity that enhances the practical nature of this book. The book also summarizes the recent developments in the molecular biology and markers for the diagnosis of urothelial tumors and includes chapters on the fine needle aspiration cytopathology of urinary tract masses and on the diagnostic value of urine cytology interpretation. This book is intended for practicing pathologists, pathologists in training, and cytotechnology students as well as researchers and those with special interest in the cytopathology of the urinary tract.
An analysis of the role of policy in challenging self-perpetuating social advantage in education. This book takes the view that policy mechanisms are an essential part of overturning the persistence of social class differences and barriers to equality of opportunity.
This report provides a method to define and measure the costs of personal immobility at a local level and contains a compendium of public transportation practices that address immobility, help reduce costs, and possibly provide economic benefits to both the riders and the larger community. The focus is on practices that assist people who need transportation to health care or who are transitioning from welfare to work. This report should be of interest to planners, decision makers, and social service and transportation providers. It should also serve as a resource to assist decision makers and transportation service providers in using their services more effectively to address the issue of personal immobility.
An examination of the novels, short story collections, and poetry of the Latin American author In Understanding Roberto Bolaño, Ricardo Gutiérrez-Mouat offers a comprehensive analysis of this critically acclaimed Chilean poet and novelist whose work brought global attention to Latin American literature in the 1960s unseen since the rise of García Márquez and magic realism. Best known for The Savage Detectives, winner of the Rómulo Gallegos Prize; the novella By Night in Chile; and the posthumously published novel 2666, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, Bolaño died in 2003 just as his reputation was becoming established. After a brief biographical sketch, Gutiérrez-Mouat chronologically contextualizes literary interpretations of Bolaño's work in terms of his life, cultural background, and political ideals. Gutiérrez-Mouat explains Bolaño's work to an English-speaking audience—including his relatively neglected poetry—and conveys a sense of where Bolaño fits in the Latin American tradition. Since his death, eleven of novels, four short story collections, and three poetry collections have been translated into English. The afterword addresses Bolaño's status as a Latin American writer, as the former literary editor of El País claimed, "neither magical realist, nor baroque nor localist, but [creator of] an imaginary, extraterritorial mirror of Latin America, more as a kind of state of mind than a specific place.

Selected from Ricardo Sternberg's four collections, along with astonishing new poems, One River is a major event. A poet who, according to one reviewer, "has divined the secret connections between the words," Sternberg's voice is unlike any other: witty, earthy, exuberant, inventive. His poems also forgo conventional subjects. Alchemists, mermaids, angels, and "jongleur" grasshoppers share space with all manner of eccentrics: a trapeze artist, a pilot who navigates by smell, a millionaire who sneaks into heaven disguised as a camel. At the heart of Sternberg's practice is prestidigitation: the sleight of hand that inheres in effortless turns of phrase, brisk syntax, and bold forms. "Leave it to me," he says to his muse, "to come up with something / that while not highfalutin, /carries a whiff of the sublime." Charismatic and original, Sternberg's enduring work is captured in all of its extraordinary range in this new book.

From ancient tales through post-modern narratives, the quest for the Wandering Islands, a version of paradise, has been a mainstay of the western literary imagination. Map of Dreams, a scintillating log of one such voyage, features such wonders as an animate figurehead, an island that etherizes, and a pilot who navigates by smell. Shot through with lists of Babylonian secrets and catalogues of books in hermetic libraries, this sequence is nonetheless as approachable as the Odyssey and the Canterbury Tales, to which the poet's gleaming narrative and vivid sketches are gracefully indebted.
