The goal of this textbook is to provide first-year engineering students with a firm grounding in the fundamentals of chemical and bioprocess engineering. However, instead of being a general overview of the two topics, Fundamentals of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering will identify and focus on specific areas in which attaining a solid competency is desired. This strategy is the direct result of studies showing that broad-based courses at the freshman level often leave students grappling with a lot of material, which results in a low rate of retention. Specifically, strong emphasis will be placed on the topic of material balances, with the intent that students exiting a course based upon this textbook will be significantly higher on Bloom’s Taxonomy (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis and synthesis, evaluation, creation) relating to material balances. In addition, this book also provides students with a highly developed ability to analyze problems from the material balances perspective, which leaves them with important skills for the future. The textbook consists of numerous exercises and their solutions. Problems are classified by their level of difficulty. Each chapter has references and selected web pages to vividly illustrate each example. In addition, to engage students and increase their comprehension and rate of retention, many examples involve real-world situations.

Psychoanalysis for Intersectional Humanity considers both the vast realm of sexual diversities emerging under capitalism and outlines what a psychoanalytic clinic that considers these diversities should be like. Ricardo Espinoza Lolas explores these themes hand in hand with the Marquis de Sade, exploring the monstrous side of our existence – not as a negative aspect of humanity, but as a part of us that strives for a freer and more inclusive life. Espinoza Lolas explores aspects of psychoanalysis, feminism, critical theory, philosophy, history, politics and the arts in considering how human determination can be torn from ego and neurosis. The book concludes with a disarticulation of the categories of neurosis, psychosis and perversion of psychoanalysis and the suggestion of a new clinic and a new politics. Psychoanalysis for Intersectional Humanity will be of great interest to psychoanalysts in practice and in training, Lacanian clinicians and scholars of psychoanalytic studies, philosophy and critical theory.

This book received support from the Faculty of Medicine of the National University of Colombia and the scientific Subdirectorate and the Department of Education of the Colombian Society of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation (Sociedad Colombiana de Anestesiología y Reanimación S.C.A.R.E.). It is lucky to be blessed with the participation of young and enthusiastic academics from two public universities, the National University and the University of Caldas. We hope it will contribute to the study and practice of resuscitation in a country like Colombia, where health policies are underdeveloped and where, due to a lack of prevention, treatment is much more difficult. This is all the more the case in the worst of situations —cardiorespiratory arrest.
This book offers a comprehensive overview of energy sectors in emerging African and Latin American nations, providing a one-stop source of information and analysis of energy sectors that differ radically from those of developed countries. These issues are elucidated by a large number of illustrations and tables to offer valuable insights into the topics and technologies discussed. The book enables students, researchers and professionals in energy to better understand the energy context in Africa and Latin America, and helps define strategies for supporting these regions in introducing low-carbon energy technologies that supplement indigenous sources in a manner that enhances long-term economic prosperity. It is also intended for consulting companies and government agencies involved in the energy sector, as well as environmental science and energy management students.
This monograph presents a unified theory of nuclear structure and nuclear reactions in the language of quantum electrodynamics, Feynman diagrams. It describes how two-nucleon transfer reaction processes can be used as a quantitative tool to interpret experimental findings with the help of computer codes and nuclear field theory. Making use of Cooper pair transfer processes, the theory is applied to the study of pair correlations in both stable and unstable exotic nuclei. Special attention is given to unstable, exotic halo systems, which lie at the forefront of the nuclear physics research being carried out at major laboratories around the world. This volume is distinctive in dealing in both nuclear structure and reactions and benefits from comparing the nuclear field theory with experimental observables, making it a valuable resource for incoming and experienced researchers who are working in nuclear pairing and using transfer reactions to probe them.
Godoy investigates five lowland Amerindian societies of tropical Latin America--all of which are experiencing deep changes as they modernize--to discover the results of a market economy on both indigenous peoples and the conservation of tropical rainforest flora and fauna.
Going far beyond a purely rational-structural way of looking at change in organizations, this book contributes well researched insights into often-overlooked organizational blind spots. The authors share their own experiences in clear and accessible language, exploring recovery from cumulative crises; nostalgia and postalgia; victimization of leaders; dealing with narcissistic leaders; and a writing process for reducing anxiety through self-reflection. Anyone who works in an organization—large or small—will gain new perspectives on the most difficult challenge of all: understanding human behavior in times of change.

Gynecology has always been a surgical specialty, yet the breadth and complexity of gynecologic surgery continues to expand. Telinde's Atlas of Gynecologic Surgery helps both the gynecologist in training and those already in practice to master this field. The text provides clear and detailed, step-by-step descriptions involved in performing techniques. Each prose is accompanied by meticulous, colorized drawings to maximize the surgeons' understanding of the technique. Included with the text, is access to an online site. The online site provides fully searchable text and narrated videos from most chapters to demonstrate the techniques anytime, anywhere. While specialists perform many of the procedures included in this text each year, in general practices these procedures are done relatively infrequently and consequently, these surgeons look for means to refresh their memories prior to performing them. This text will also serve as a treasured resource for new surgeons and residents who are just incorporating these procedures into their surgical repertoire.
Phosphates in Food provides the first comprehensive analysis of phosphates used in food processing in almost 20 years. The book describes the nomenclature, structure, chemistry, and analytical procedures for phosphates in foods. Interactions between added and some natural phosphates and food components (particularly proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and metal ions) are examined in relation to using phosphates in food processing for such purposes as increasing the water-holding capacity of proteins, improving emulsification, preventing gelation, and delaying lipid oxidation. The book also discusses the use of phosphates in specific food groups, such as milk and dairy products; meats, poultry, and fish; fruits and vegetables; bakery products and cereals; and miscellaneous food products including beverages, fats and oils, sugar and confectionery products, eggs and derivatives, and specialty products. An extensive section discussing the importance of phosphates as microbial agents is presented and is followed by a final section that examines the nutritional and health implications of elevated phosphate intake. The book contains 1,135 references, 43 tables, and 34 figures, making it an ideal reference resource for researchers in food sciences, microbiology, and nutrition; food and chemical industries; and regulatory agencies within local, state, and federal governments.
This book addresses two important and related questions: does participation in a market economy help or hurt indigenous peoples and how does it affect the conservation of tropical rainforest flora and fauna? Oddly, there have been few quantitative studies that have addressed these issues. Ricardo Godoy's research takes an important step toward rectifying this oversight by investigating five different lowland Amerindian societies of tropical Latin America—all of which are experiencing deep changes as they modernize. Godoy examines the effect of markets on a broad range of areas including health, conservation of flora and fauna, leisure, folk knowledge, reciprocity, and private time preference. He concludes that, contrary to considerable anthropological theory, the effect of markets on the quality of life and the rainforest are often unclear or benign. Godoy uses multivariate techniques to examine the changes modernization has had on many indicators of the quality of life and the environment and concludes that the seeds of socioeconomic differentiation may already lie dormant in simple economies. The impact of modernization on lowland Amerindians is a topic of great concern to anthropologists, researchers, and policymakers in developing nations, and this book is a significant contribution to the debate about the likely future of indigenous people.
This paper analyses and compares two different groups of tools, the first to encourage the use of invoices (or payment systems) and the second to refund the VAT to low-income individuals. The analysis contributes to the existing literature by providing a clear characterization between these two groups of tools that are too often misunderstood and offers clear guidance to policymakers on the benefits and pitfalls of them based on available empirical studies and novel data analysis. Briefly, the first group includes a set of regressive and distortive tools (such as, allowing deducting the VAT paid on personal consumption from the PIT and reducing the VAT rate for using electronic means of payments or registration), while the second group includes tools that are less distortionary and improve income distribution (tax credits and VAT rate reduction targeted only at low-income individuals). This paper also finds that allowing the deduction of personal consumption against the PIT’s taxable base (i) did not impact positively the VAT revenue in Guatemala and (ii) worsens the income distribution in Ecuador.
This book examines what lies behind the uncertainties surrounding the fuel and power markets. Exploring the role of renewables and how they potentially disrupt or create opportunities, it challenges widely accepted wisdoms in investment. The author asks questions such as: Are “business as usual” strategies that favour fossil fuels the best route to future prosperity? What prospects do firms face when their competitors diversify into renewables? Why do generous subsidies to renewables often fail to achieve wide-scale deployment? Illustrating how real options and option games reasoning yield vastly different insights from those gained from NPVs, Energy Investments offers case studies and simulations to demonstrate how firms can benefit from the methods it showcases.
A comprehensive introduction to hybrid control systems and design Hybrid control systems exhibit both discrete changes, or jumps, and continuous changes, or flow. An example of a hybrid control system is the automatic control of the temperature in a room: the temperature changes continuously, but the control algorithm toggles the heater on or off intermittently, triggering a discrete jump within the algorithm. Hybrid control systems feature widely across disciplines, including biology, computer science, and engineering, and examples range from the control of cellular responses to self-driving cars. Although classical control theory provides powerful tools for analyzing systems that exhibit either flow or jumps, it is ill-equipped to handle hybrid control systems. In Hybrid Feedback Control, Ricardo Sanfelice presents a self-contained introduction to hybrid control systems and develops new tools for their analysis and design. Hybrid behavior can occur in one or more subsystems of a feedback system, and Sanfelice offers a unified control theory framework, filling an important gap in the control theory literature. In addition to the theoretical framework, he includes a plethora of examples and exercises, a Matlab toolbox (as well as two open-source versions), and an insightful overview at the beginning of each chapter. Relevant to dynamical systems theory, applied mathematics, and computer science, Hybrid Feedback Control will be useful to students and researchers working on hybrid systems, cyber-physical systems, control, and automation.

This book evaluates the influence of process variations (e.g. work-function fluctuations) and radiation-induced soft errors in a set of logic cells using FinFET technology, considering the 7nm technological node as a case study. Moreover, for accurate soft error estimation, the authors adopt a radiation event generator tool (MUSCA SEP3), which deals both with layout features and electrical properties of devices. The authors also explore four circuit-level techniques (e.g. transistor reordering, decoupling cells, Schmitt Trigger, and sleep transistor) as alternatives to attenuate the unwanted effects on FinFET logic cells. This book also evaluates the mitigation tendency when different levels of process variation, transistor sizing, and radiation particle characteristics are applied in the design. An overall comparison of all methods addressed by this work is provided allowing to trace a trade-off between the reliability gains and the design penalties of each approach regarding the area, performance, power consumption, single event transient (SET) pulse width, and SET cross-section.

The focus of this book is the judicial institutionalization of integration processes through the development of dispute settlement mechanisms, more especifically in the Common Market of the South (MERCOSUR), to date, the most important regional bloc in Latin America. The bloc has been in existence since 1991 and has positioned itself as one of the potential regional blocs for trade and investment, while becoming one of the important actors in the international community. However, its achievements have been tainted by the gaps and problems attached to the core foundation of the regional bloc. MERCOSUR has been suffering or experiencing internal disputes and disunity due to its complex and low institutionalization, a situation which can be seen as being paradoxical. Its current Dispute Settlement Mechanism is subject to uncertainty and doubt, since its own framework is also under internal and external criticism. There has been a series of protocols made in order to tackle the problems of the DSM and to further fix the problems that hinder the cooperation as well as the productivity of MERCOSUR's intra-organisation, all guided by intergovernmental decision-making. As such, this book seeks to tackle the concept of regionalism and the possible models which have been used or have influenced the establishment of MERCOSUR, while discussing the different aspects and developments of each intra-organisation. This is done in order to evaluate the nature of the problem, and future developments that could take place. The book also focuses on the prevalence of politicization in MERCOSUR and the pre-eminence of Presidential Diplomacy over the path of regional integration, which influence the DSM of MERCOSUR and possible developments that might occur in the near future.
This book describes the benefits and drawbacks inherent in the use of virtual platforms (VPs) to perform fast and early soft error assessment of multicore systems. The authors show that VPs provide engineers with appropriate means to investigate new and more efficient fault injection and mitigation techniques.
