Runner-up: TES/NASEN Book Awards (Books for Teaching and Learning Category) 2005 'Excellent: it meets a real need on the part of learning mentors going into schools, who can be expected to sort out problems that staff with years of experience can't sort out and to act as a sponge for all sorts of trauma and emotion' 'This is something schools can keep on hand: not a complete training package, but useful." "The contacts sections, for example the one on bereavement, are invaluable: learning mentors are expected to know a bit about everything' - comments from the TES/NASEN book awards panel 'This practical resource, based on development work in a large high school, covers a wide range of topics and provides an excellent 'starter pack' for new mentors and anyone involved in their induction' - SENCO Update `This book landed on my desk this morning and I just had to include it! It is aimed at LMs, TAs and teachers and is a really useful resource. It comes with a CD ROM (Adobe Acrobat needed) and is part of Lucky Duck Publications, which is well-known for producing quality resources in the field of emotional literacy. There are thirteen chapters on: Emotional Intelligence, Self-Esteem, Anger Management, Bereavement, Self-harm, Drug Awareness, Bullying, Behaviour Change, Transition, Attendance, School Refusal and Punctuality, Revisions and Friendship. Many of you will recognise these themes as areas in which you work and may already have resources for these areas but these are conveniently put together in one book. It is aimed at pupils at the upper end of KS2 up to KS4. Each chapter contains information around each topic, plus photocopiable worksheets such as emotions cards, stories, ideas for games and activities and links to websites. Most of these can be adapted to suit the needs of different schools and to facilitate working within the school's policies. I would especially recommend this book to people who are new to these roles or who are setting up emotional literacy groups within schools for the first time, but established groups would also find them useful' - Teaching Assistant News Learning mentors are well established in our schools as a skilled and resourceful adjunct to the staff group. They bring a varied background of training and expertise, often adding additional accomplishments to those of the teaching staff. This publication is produced by two colleague mentors who have researched the information and produced the resources they needed to do their job well. The book provides a factual introduction to the range of special needs they encounter amongst the students they support: · Self-Esteem · Emotional and behavioural difficulties · Anger management · Self harm. In addition they include support strategies, interventions and some copiable resources based on their own experiences and good practice. This is a great book for mentors, TAs and teachers - keep it on the staff room coffee table. Kathy Salter worked for nearly six years as a Learning Mentor in a large Leeds High School and now works for the Leeds Youth Offending Service as a Youth Justice Worker. Rhonda Twidle is a trainee Probation Office in West Yorkshire. Water is a core symbol in the Gospel of John and is particularly prevalent in passages that involve the revelation of Jesus's identity. Using Richard Bauckham's category of a "Christology of Divine Identity," That He Might Be Revealed explores the way the Fourth Evangelist plays on the memory of the major water events of Israel's history and mythology in order to incorporate Jesus into the divine identity. In the water stories of the OT, the distinctive identity and abilities of Yahweh are at stake. Yahweh's victory in these events forever fuses his identity to water imagery so that control of the waters becomes one of the major markers that characterizes and distinguishes him in Jewish thought. The water imagery in John is the author's attempt to tap into this rich accumulation of images and memories to identify Jesus as God himself incarnate.

On a cold, winter day on a busy street in Washington, D.C., Rhonda Hinkle Broyles was stopped in her tracks by "Just Tryin to Live" scrawled in the concrete of a curb. Find some of those sermons condensed in these 40 devotionals, along with reflections by Rhonda on how Henry's words encourage us all in life's joys and challenges. From personal experience, Rhonda offers insightful messages on the joys and challenges along the journey of life. With this book, anchored in those sermons, join her in an exercise of moving Beyond Just Tryin' to Live.

The book of Revelation is almost certainly the most controversial book of the Bible. Some believe the prophesies contained in the book can never be understood; they are a mystery that cannot be revealed and the reading of Revelation is therefore a waste of time. Many believe that the book tells of the coming tribulations that our generation or one of the succeeding ones will face, that the rapture will yet take place and that the millenium has not yet begun. Then there are those who fall in between the two extremes, saying that we are in the millenium, or that the rapture has already occurred; that the prophecies have all been fulfilled or that some have been and some are yet to be.
Between the 1950s and 1970s, Black Power coalesced as activists advocated a more oppositional approach to fighting racial oppression, emphasizing racial pride, asserting black political, cultural, and economic autonomy, and challenging white power. In Concrete Demands, Rhonda Y. Williams provides a rich, deeply researched history that sheds new light on this important social and political movement, and shows that the era of expansive Black Power politics that emerged in the 1960s had long roots and diverse trajectories within the 20th century. Looking at the struggle from the grassroots level, Williams highlights the role of ordinary people as well as more famous historical actors, and demonstrates that women activists were central to Black Power. Vivid and highly readable, Concrete Demands is a perfect introduction to Black Power in the twentieth century for anyone interested in the history of black liberation movements.

On a cold blustery Sunday morning in January 2017, it was the first time my family and I stepped into the foyer of the Redeemer International Church of The Hague. We were met by a vivacious colorful woman who welcomed us and introduced herself by saying, “Good morning! My name is Rhonda, just like the song “Help Me Rhonda,” now you’ll never forget!” And she was right, how could we forget? We were from America and very familiar with this popular Beach Boys’ song. But besides that, we will never forget this warm welcome and who could guess that this woman would become one of my closest sisters in the Lord – a covenant sister. Rhonda Dikoko is a whirlwind, a dynamo, a beautiful, passionate and committed woman of God. I know of her toil in the Lord, how she gives 100% in everything she does. I’ve personally experienced this love and compassion at time when I was sick at home for a few weeks. Even though she was working full time, she came almost every day; to check on me, to bring me homemade soup and to give her encouragement. She doesn’t know it, but she carried me those weeks and I will never forget the blessing she was to me and my family. As you read this devotional book, you will see a glimpse of the wonderful woman Rhonda is, but I know with all her heart – she would want you to not see her, but Jesus Christ in her, daily working in her to bring the full glory unto God. ---- Mary Thomas, member of Redeemer International Church of The Hague.
Similarly to how the True Farmer prunes unfruitful branches in favor of the prolific branches, a dairy farmer increases the value of his herd by culling unproductive cows. No calves. No milk. No moo-la. Steer-ile Bible herd mentalities need to be culled from our happy God’s Unadulterated Teachings before they cheapen grace by failing to reproduce hope in a fractured world. Something Stewing in a Cracked Pot cooks up a fresh off the farm field of vision that is: Sprinkled with wit Spiced with a hint of Hebraic perspective Seasoned with covenants Stirred, not shaken, in faith Served from a recovering perfectionist pot Taking the practice of culling from the cow kingdom into God’s, Rhonda Archer moo-ves out udder-ly absurd cultural assumptions then opens the gates so restored thinkers will be as free and happy as calves let out to pasture.
Cavalry units from Midwestern states remain largely absent from Civil War literature, and what little has been written largely overlooks the individual men who served. The Fifth Illinois Cavalry has thus remained obscure despite participating in some of the most important campaigns in Arkansas and Mississippi. In this pioneering examination of that understudied regiment, Rhonda M. Kohl offers the only modern, comprehensive analysis of a southern Illinois regiment during the Civil War and combines well-documented military history with a cultural analysis of the men who served in the Fifth Illinois. The regiment’s history unfolds around major events in the Western Theater from 1861 to September 1865, including campaigns at Helena, Vicksburg, Jackson, and Meridian, as well as numerous little-known skirmishes. Although they were led almost exclusively by Northern-born Republicans, the majority of the soldiers in the Fifth Illinois remained Democrats. As Kohl demonstrates, politics, economics, education, social values, and racism separated the line officers from the common soldiers, and the internal friction caused by these cultural disparities led to poor leadership, low morale, disciplinary problems, and rampant alcoholism. The narrative pulls the Fifth Illinois out of historical oblivion, elucidating the highs and lows of the soldiers’ service as well as their changing attitudes toward war goals, religion, liberty, commanding generals, Copperheads, and alcoholism. By reconstructing the cultural context of Fifth Illinois soldiers, Prairie Boys Go to War reveals how social and economic traditions can shape the wartime experience.

This descriptive analysis of contemporary Portuguese culture from a historical perspective covers topics ranging from art, cuisine, and music to government, politics, and religion. Portugal is evolving quickly as an integrated part of modern Europe. What was until the mid-1970s an old-world society, where 80 percent of the economy was controlled by an oligarchy of eight elite families, is now increasingly a model of an advanced European state. Portugal now ranks highly among the countries of the world in level of globalization and quality of life; it even boasts one of the best-developed renewable energy infrastructures of any developed country. Despite such widespread modernization, however, "old country" Portuguese traditions persist in the political realms, as well as the traditional lifestyles that endure in the countryside. Culture and Customs of Portugal devotes careful attention to such topics as Portuguese holidays, media, marriage, gender roles, architecture, and education, providing readers with a full account of Portugal's rich heritage and modern culture. The drastic changes in the nation following the 1974 military coup that overthrew a 48-year dictatorship receive special attention.
