Since its first description (1841) the identity of West syndrome was deeply investigated and is now recognized as an epileptic syndrome in infancy (ILAE Task Force, 1989). West syndrome has become a paradigmatic model of an epileptic syndrome causing neurological deterioration (epileptic encephalopathy) and the object of a number of studies aimed at understanding the complex relationships between an epileptic disorder and neurodevelopment. Although the symptomatic triad (peculiar electrographic findings named hypsarrhythmia, brief tonic spasms, and arrest of psychomotor development) that characterizes the syndrome suggests a unique pathogenetic mechanism, causal heterogeneity heavily influences syndrome variability in terms of neurodevelopment, treatment choices, management and, possibly, electroclinical semiology. Important insights may arise for that might help developing models of epileptic encephalopathies in the basic sciences. However, a more immediate benefit may arise for clinicians in everyday practice. A group of clinical researchers recently met in Rome to discuss hot points concerning infantile spasms and West syndrome. Their contributions were collected and are presented in this book that we hope will contribute to the progress of knowledge of this paradigmatic epileptic disorder.

My aim was to explain in detail the facts surrounding Fascist anti-Semitism and the persecution of the Jews in Mussolini's Italy. Too many people in Italy and elsewhere underestimate or deny the tragic fate of European Jewry and anti-Semitism between the two world wars. A few short years ago anti-Semitism appeared defeated and reduced to a tiny group of fanatics. But now it seems to be regaining ground in its more political incarnation, probably the most dangerous one, because next to the religious, social and economic varieties it is the most insidious of all. The author occupies a central position among Italian historians specialized in modern Italy's political history. He broke new ground by first publishing this book in 1961 having obtained special permission to consult the files in the Archives of the Italian Jewish Communities concerning the Fascist regime's persecution of the Jews in Italy from 1938 to 1945. The book's release coincided with the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem that brought the Holocaust to the attention of other historians and to the world public. The English translation of the final 1993 edition was supported by a grant from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This paperback and electronic book edition is published in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

In turn, it presents a range of flood proofing concepts and techniques, together with a complete and updated classification of related methods and devices. This provides a user-friendly tool to help identify appropriate solutions to real-world problems for each specific risk scenario. In particular, the book focuses on temporary flood proofing techniques, given their ability to deliver effective performance at low costs. Lastly, it features an overview of norms, guidelines and laboratory recommendations that are currently being adopted in various countries with regard to flood proofing devices and testing procedures. The purpose of this book is essentially to encourage authorities, stakeholders, technicians and end users to successfully develop flood proofing solutions that can reduce flood risk in a pragmatic manner. In addition, the authors hope to inspire researchers, manufacturers and designers (engineers, architects, urban planners and urban managers) to pursue further advances in this key sector of public and private safety in urban areas.
