We live in a complex world that can at times frustrate our attempts to understand it. To cope with such an environment human beings must be able to reason clearly, methodically, subtly, comprehensively – in a word, skillfully. Although this ability depends to a certain extent on one’s innate intellectual endowment, much of it is due to learning and habit. One’s education, beginning in the home and continuing thereafter in school, plays an important role in how well we contend with the flood of natural and man-made information that daily washes over us. The university bears a particular responsibility for educating reason, that is, transmitting to students a set of thinking skills and content that will help them make their way, not just in the tumultuous present, but also in any alternative future they are likely to face. We will argue that, in order to carry out this responsibility, higher education must first acknowledge that its task is not simply to transmit a curriculum that enables the student to be technically proficient, that is, to apply skills competently and reliably. Education, properly so called, demands more than this. It requires that students develop a wealth of epistemic virtues: internal, deeply-grounded, acquired intellectual excellences which motivate and direct one’s use of the cognitive skills in such a way as to promote a life worth living. In order to address this theme we will examine a range of benefits and challenges associated with learning and teaching cognitive skills at the college level. Specifically, we will look at deduction and some of its multiple articulations with other intellectual skills. These benefits and challenges will be organized according to the following categories: (1) logical issues having to do with deduction itself; (2) linguistic concerns related to translation from natural language into the formal language of modern logic; (3) certain matters associated with other cognitive skills which bear an important functional relationship to deduction, such as application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation; and (4) an account of the epistemic virtues, including the fundamental role they play in the exercise of the skills and their importance in the development of the cognitive agent.

Should I go downbeat, with a column about the travails of fallen Super Bowl hero Timmy Smith, or upbeat with a column about Bob Sepulveda, Alamogordo High School's fine and dedicated boys track coach? I flipped a coin, and it came down on its edge. The face is, in an ironic sort of way, the two go together. Sepulveda is a perfect example of the many scholastic coaches who send a positive message to their athletes. Smith is a perfect example of an athlete who, apparently, never got the message. Smith's story, of course, was not always so downbeat. Six years ago, in fact the Hobbs native seemed to have the world at his feet. What a story it was Smith, a superstar running back at Hobbs High School, had overcome a disappointing, injury-plagued college career at Texas Tech to make the roster of the National Football League's Washington Redskins. January 31st, 1988, the 23-year-oldrookie made Super Bowl History with a record 204 years rushing in the Redskins'42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos. The city of Hobbs and the state of New Mexico were justifiably proud of this native son. Before and after the Super Bowl, memorials praising Smith were introduced in the New Mexico Legislature. On February 15, two of those memorials were approved by the state senate-despite embarrassing news that Smith owed nearly $6,000 in delinquent child support payments. The news regarding Smith never really got better. THE LONGEST RUN... ...Sepulveda isn't Knute Rockne; he is just a good, hard-working coach and a good responsible person who cares about the kids in his charge. That for anyone who is paying attention, is all the message that is necessary. James Daniel Nelson first hit the streets as a teenager in 1992. He joined a clutch of runaways and misfits who camped out together in a squat under a Portland bridge. Within a few months the group -- they called themselves a "family" -- was arrested for a string of violent murders. While Nelson sat in prison, the society he had helped form grew into a national phenomenon. Street families spread to every city from New York to San Francisco, and to many small towns in between, bringing violence with them. In 2003, almost eleven years after his original murder, Nelson, now called "Thantos", got out of prison, returned to Portland, created a new street family, and killed once more. Twelve family members were arrested along with him. Rene Denfeld spent over a decade following the evolution of street family culture. She discovered that, contrary to popular belief, the majority of these teenagers hail from loving middle-class homes. Yet they have left those homes to form insular communities with cultish hierarchies, codes of behavior, languages, quasireligions, and harsh rules. She reveals the extremes to which desperate teenagers will go in their search for a sense of community, and builds a persuasive and troubling case that street families have grown among us into a dark reversal of the American ideal.
