First published in 1998. This is part II of the sociology of colonies, and Volume XVIII of the twenty-one in the Race, Class and Social Structure series. Written ten years after part one, in the language in the 1941, this part provides an introduction to the study of the conflict of manners and customs, the progress of law in the colonies: this is the social phenomenon of the relationship between one people and another in a distant country.
For thousands of years, men have struggled to establish their supremacy. At first, they used spirits to secure for themselves a function in a natural world that seemed to have taken sides with the feminine. Eventually, they created an all-mighty divinity, and established their status as second to none other than that highest of all authority. Sailing through history, we show that the way procreation was perceived has determined how men and women positioned themselves in the universe. It has wielded consequences that have deeply affected our evolution, from the primal vision of an all-encompassing natural world in which Mother Nature represented the source of all life, to the subjection of nature and woman, with God the Father sitting at the summit of the creation. This emphasis on gender and nature brings into perspective the current social and economic resurgence of women and the new attitude towards environment that needs to be protected from our own deeds. These intricate leitmotifs make us witness a turning point in our history.
We have approximately 500,000 children in this country living in foster homes, kinship homes, or group homes. There are probably another 500,000 that should be in the system, however, there is just no place to send them. In author Rene Howitt's book, "Whose Best Interest," she tells the true story of a fight to save two children from abuse and neglect. Parents are given one chance after another to put their lives together. Children are taken away from their parents, only to be returned to them time and again. The children become like ping-pong balls bounced back and forth between these temporary homes and then back to their parents. By the time that Family Services concludes that there is no changing the parents, years have passed by and the children are irreparably damaged.
