Estimations suggest more than 2 million children have experienced a parental deployment since 2002, and 1.2 million of those children are school-aged (i.e. 6 to 18 years). Academically, school-aged children whose parents are deployed perform lower than children whose parents have never been deployed, particularly with increased cumulative months of deployment experienced by military-connected (MC) children. School personnel hypothesize the impact may be due to internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems resulting from parental deployment, which often relate to mental health challenges of the non-deployed parent. Home-based studies suggest deployment impacts internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems, particularly in younger children aged five to 12 years. However, there is a lack of studies examining the impact of deployment on these behavioral outcomes within the school setting and using teacher report. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of parental deployment on internalizing and externalizing behaviors within the home and school setting. The study utilized a mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA) design to examine differences in behavioral and emotional risk, utilizing both parent and teacher report, between two groups. The two groups included military-connected (MC) students currently or recently experiencing deployment (within previous 6 months), and MC students who neither currently nor recently experienced parental deployment. Results suggest a significant main effect for rater on internalizing behavioral problems, with the parents rating the children higher than the teachers; however, no significant main effect of parental deployment status was indicated. No significant main effect of parental deployment status or rater was found for externalizing behavior problems. Further, while there was a significant main effect between parents and teachers on internalizing behaviors, most of the sample fell within the average range on both scales, based upon both teacher and parent report. Implications, limitations and future research are discussed.
In Contemporary Southern Identity, Rebecca Bridges Watts explores the implications of four public controversies about southern identity—debates about the Confederate flag in South Carolina, the gender integration of the Virginia Military Institute, the display of public art in Richmond, and Trent Lott's controversial comments regarding Strom Thurmond's 1948 segregationist presidential bid. While such debates may serve as evidence of the South's “battle over the past,” they can alternatively be seen as harbingers of a changing South. These controversies highlight the diversity of voices in the conversation of what it means to be a southerner. The participants in these conflicts may disagree about what southern identity should be, but they all agree that such discussions are a crucial part of being southern. Recent debates as to the place of Old South symbols and institutions in the South of the new millennium are evidence of a changing order. But a changing South is no less distinctive. If southerners can find unity and distinctiveness in their identification, they may even be able to serve as a model for the increasingly divided United States. The very debates portrayed in the mass media as evidence of an “unfinished Civil War” can instead be interpreted as proof that the South has progressed and is having a common dialogue as to what its diverse members want it to be.

Established in 1669 as a small farming village on the banks of the Merrimack River, Dracuts early settlers made their mark during the American Revolution. From French nobleman Louis Ansart, who became an American citizen and settled in the area, to Dracuts own Joseph Bradley Varnum, the town played a pivotal role in the founding of the nation. More recently, Dracut continues to be the home of modern-day patriots such as Michael Monahan, who left college to serve in the Vietnam War, and Capt. John Ogonowski, who gave his life on September 11, 2001. Dracut has been home to numerous other local legendsDr. Christos Daoulas was the longest-serving Massachusetts school superintendent, and Dennis Piendak oversaw incredible growth and expansion during his 28 years as town manager. Dracut was also home to the indomitable Polly Urquhart, whose name now graces the corner where her store once stood; Rev. Larry Zimmerman, the pastor of the Old Yellow Meeting House for 33 years; and Edmund Murphy, the dean of Massachusetts high school football coaches. An original examination of the ubiquity of glitter—from bodily adornment to activist glitter bombing—and its vibrant and transformational properties. Glitter is everywhere, from crafting to makeup, from vagazelling to glitter-bombing, from fashion to fish. Glitter also gets everywhere. It sticks to what it is and isn't supposed to, and travels beyond its original uses, eliciting reactions ranging from delight to irritation. In Glitterworlds, Rebecca Coleman examines this ubiquity of glitter, following it as it moves across different popular cultural worlds and exploring its effect on understandings and experiences of gender, sexuality, class and race. Coleman investigates how girls engage with glitter in collaging workshops to imagine their futures; how glitter can adorn the outside and the inside of the body; how glitter features in the films Glitter and Precious; and how LGBTQ* activists glitter bomb homophobic and transphobic people. Throughout, Coleman attends to the plurality of politics that glitter generates, approaching this through the concepts of hope, wonder, fabulation, and prefigurative politics—all of which indicate the making of different, better worlds, although often not in ways that are straightforward or conventional. She develops an original account of future politics, where time is nonlinear and sometimes non-progressive. Coleman's argument brings together feminist cultural theory, feminist new materialisms, and theories on futures and temporality, in order to propose that we should understand glitter as a thing—vibrant, processual, transformational, and traversing boundaries between media and material, culture and nature, bodies and environments.
