This is the first study to provide a systematic and thorough investigation of continuo realization styles appropriate to Restoration sacred music, an area of performance practice that has never previously been properly assessed. Rebecca Herissone undertakes detailed analysis of a group of organ books closely associated with the major Restoration composers Purcell, Blow and Humfrey, and the London institutions where they spent their professional lives. By investigating the relationship between the organ books' two-stave arrangements and full scores of the same pieces, Herissone demonstrates that the books are subtle sources of information to the accompanist, not just short or skeleton scores. Using this evidence, she formulates a model for continuo realization of this repertory based on the doubling of vocal parts, an approach that differs significantly from that adopted by most modern editors, and which throws into question much of the accepted continuo practice in modern performance of this repertory.

Musical Creativity in Restoration England is the first comprehensive investigation of approaches to creating music in late seventeenth-century England. Understanding creativity during this period is particularly challenging because many of our basic assumptions about composition - such as concepts of originality, inspiration and genius - were not yet fully developed. In adopting a new methodology that takes into account the historical contexts in which sources were produced, Rebecca Herissone challenges current assumptions about compositional processes and offers new interpretations of the relationships between notation, performance, improvisation and musical memory. She uncovers a creative culture that was predominantly communal, and reveals several distinct approaches to composition, determined not by individuals, but by the practical function of the music. Herissone's new and original interpretations pose a fundamental challenge to our preconceptions about what it meant to be a composer in the seventeenth century and raise broader questions about the interpretation of early modern notation.

Located in Floridas lake region, the city of Umatilla sits on a sandy ridge pocked by hundreds of lakes and depressions of sinkhole origin that leak water into the limestone Floridan aquifer, which, in turn, is drained by numerous nearby artesian springs. When Florida achieved American statehood in 1845, following nearly two centuries of ceding by the French, British, and Spanish via treaties, Central Florida was the last frontier of the eastern United States. In the early 1850s, pioneer Nathan Trowell brought his family beyond the St. Johns River seeking health and prosperity. The family traveled by horse and wagon through longleaf yellow pine forests following ancient Native American sand trails to the place where they built their homestead. Their home was one of the first in what would become Umatilla. Before the end of the 19th century, Umatilla had become one of Floridas most successful citrus communities, with a general store, a hotel, a post office, a blacksmith shop, a packinghouse, and four churches. Umatillas temperate weather, natural resources, and beauty drew its original citizens, and while citrus is no longer Umatillas main industry, the lure of her beauty and charm remains today.
There is presently a view that accessible technologies offer an inclusive and humanistic expression of technology. They do. But that is not all. Accessible technologies offer more than this: they contain within them lessons on transformational leadership. Through examining six case studies the reader will begin to interpret these accessible technologies as expressions of leadership. The risk inherent in the current view is that to view accessible technologies only as examples of humanism, or the good, is to risk underselling them. In fact, accessible technologies (which are being created across international society) represent a powerful leadership approach to technology itself. Through their leadership, these accessible technologies demand and create new and original thinking by society. The reader will benefit from this Element by learning to identify transformational leadership within accessible technological creations and consequently gaining a capacity to apply this leadership to the very purposes of technology itself.
Thus, over the course of the seventeenth century, there occurred a complete transformation in almost every aspect of theory: by the 1720s, many of the principles being described bore close relation to those still used today. Nowhere was this metamorphosis clearer than in England where, because of a traditional emphasis on practicality, there was much more willingness to accept and encourage new theoretical ideas than on the continent.
Hermeneutic-phenomenological interviews were conducted to explore community-based extension workers? (CBEWs?) previous work and training experiences and how such experiences contributed to their present working relationships as partners in community development. CBEWs? responses foreshadowed challenges and problems of coordination that could have otherwise been addressed had they been considered integral elements of previous training curricula. The findings throw light on how government policies, though explicitly formulated to enhance conditions of service coordination, can be in variance with realities of coordination at the village level. Awareness of the fissure of policies and actual coordination does not refute the importance of government intervention in community development, given CBEWs? status as government employees. Rather, it is only with understanding of and familiarity with CBEWs? circumstances that such policies would truly address the challenges, problems, and possibilities of effective coordination.CBEWs? comments reflected both awareness and learned understanding of social and political complexities surrounding their work as partners in community development. Authority and interventions such as political interference, illiterate communities, enlightened communities, and passive and negative attitudes complicate their working together, resulting in problems of resistance, rejection, and other tensions that defeat the spirit of working together. Meaningful acceptance of community development as a collective undertaking needs to be backed by a deliberate unification of CBEWs through centrally organized training. Such training programs must not only illuminate the lived experiences of CBEWs as they work among themselves and with other community-based groups in the villages, but also provide opportunities for CBEWs to take active roles by engaging in activities such as placements in authentic work settings, mini-interdisciplinary groupings of CBEWs with local communities, and other team activities. There will be no end to the reservoir of learning if intentional efforts are made to incorporate local knowledge and needs, that is, immediate challenges, problems, and needs of CBEWs as they work with the local communities. Further, effective coordination requires basic skills of communication, leadership and management, personal and human relations, technical skills and relevant attitudinal orientations.The features described here are not exhaustive, but have in common the intent of making training programs truly sensitive to CBEWs? needs as partners in community development

The bulk of the book is devoted to personal accounts, many of them moving, of the conditions endured by U.S. prisoners at the hands of the British, as preserved in journals or diaries kept by physicians, ships' captains, and the prisoners themselves. Of greater genealogical interest is the alphabetical list of 8,000 men who were imprisoned on the British vessel The Old Jersey, which the author copied from the papers of the British War Department and incorporated in the appendix to the work. Also included is a Muster Roll of Captain Abraham Shepherd's Company of Virginia Riflemen and a section on soldiers of the Pennsylvania Flying Camp who perished in prison, 1776-1777.
In The Baptism of Early Virginia, Rebecca Anne Goetz examines the construction of race through the religious beliefs and practices of English Virginians. She finds the seventeenth century a critical time in the development and articulation of racial ideologies—ultimately in the idea of “hereditary heathenism,” the notion that Africans and Indians were incapable of genuine Christian conversion. In Virginia in particular, English settlers initially believed that native people would quickly become Christian and would form a vibrant partnership with English people. After vicious Anglo-Indian violence dashed those hopes, English Virginians used Christian rituals like marriage and baptism to exclude first Indians and then Africans from the privileges enjoyed by English Christians—including freedom. Resistance to hereditary heathenism was not uncommon, however. Enslaved people and many Anglican ministers fought against planters’ racial ideologies, setting the stage for Christian abolitionism in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Using court records, letters, and pamphlets, Goetz suggests new ways of approaching and understanding the deeply entwined relationship between Christianity and race in early America.
