Food & Wine editor Ray Isle does for wine what Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma did for food—showing readers how to choose more delicious, interesting, and environmentally friendly wines without breaking the bank. So much of today’s wine is mass-produced, industrially farmed, corporate-owned, and essentially, ordinary. In The World in a Wineglass, veteran wine writer Ray Isle explains that the way a wine is made, and who made it, can make a huge difference when you drink it—and why that information matters much more than knowing it scored 90 points. Or that it tastes like blueberries. Or “hints of violets and black pepper.” Drawing on his deep knowledge and genuine appreciation of winemaking, Isle takes us on a tour of several hundred independently owned wineries around the world—everywhere from France’s Burgundy to Oregon’s Willamette Valley to the Itata Valley in the southern reaches of Chile—bringing the local vintners to life and describing the different wines they produce in vivid detail. Isle’s enthusiasm for the grape growers and winemakers who are working sustainably or organically shines through as he shares his love for the way a glass of wine can express the place it comes from and capture the essence of the person who made it. Focusing on wines people can afford, rather than $500 rarities, Isle shows us where and how to find the most interesting bottles out there today. Whether you prefer a hearty cabernet, a crisp chardonnay, or something more off the beaten path, Ray Isle’s affable, accessible guide to finding unusual or undiscovered varieties offers a window into a whole new fascinating world for wine lovers everywhere.
Dean Foster knows that he’s a trans man. He's watched enough YouTube videos and done enough questioning to be sure. But everyone at his high school thinks he’s a lesbian—including his girlfriend Zoe. Maybe he can just wait to openly transition until he’s off at college. Besides, he's got enough to worry about: He’s cast as Romeo in the school play (in what the theater teacher thinks is an interesting gender swap), he’s falling in love with Zoe, and he's applying to the NYU theater program. It’s not everything, but it’s pretty good. But playing a boy every day in rehearsals, Dean realizes he wants everyone to see him as he really is now––not just on the stage, but everywhere in his life. Emboldened by stepping out on the stage as Romeo each day and the trans youth support group he's started attending, he knows what he needs to do. The only question remains: can he try to achieve everything he needs without losing all he has?

Lignans, by convention, are a group of natural products that are formed by linking two phenylpropanoid units (C C units) by oxidative coupling. Most importantly, in 6 3 a lignan, two (C C units) are bound through the central carbon of their side chains, 6 3 0 i. e. the 8 and 8 positions (1, 2). The occurrence of C C -dimers, linked at sites other 6 3 0 than the 8–8 positions, is also known and these compounds have been termed neolignans (3, 4). As these two groups of compounds have close structural as well as biosynthetic relationships, they are often associated together and incorporated under the general term “lignan” (5). The diverse structural categorization of true lignans and of a few neolignans is presented in Fig. 1. Through the years, several review articles or books covering different facets of lignans, including their ch- istry (6, 7), biogenesis (8), synthesis (9), and biological activities (10) have been published. Enduring research for the investigation of secondary metabolites of plants has evidenced some compounds that are biogenetically related to true lignans or neolignans but bear some features not discerned in conventional lignans. These compounds or groups of compounds have been termed as “non-conventional lignans”, and include coumarinolignans, ?avonolignans, and stilbenolignans. The non-conventional lignans, like the conventional ones, have two C C units linked 6 3 together but have additional structural features to place them also under the category of coumarins, ?avonoids, or stilbenes.
One of the most critical elements in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is the effective teaching of reading comprehension in the early years. This timely resource provides evidence-based practices for teachers to use as they work to meet standards associated with comprehending complex literature and informational texts. The authors offer a practical model, with classroom applications drawing on the Construction-Integration (CI) model of text comprehension. Illustrating why comprehension is so important in the CCSS framework, the book distills six key principles for meeting CCSS and other high-challenge standards. Chapters show teachers how to build oral language and text comprehension skills with young readers, including selecting texts, organizing materials, scheduling time, and assessing the acquisition of knowledge. Book Features: A practitioner-friendly model for teaching comprehension of informational and narrative texts in the early grades.Guidance for how to create a classroom environment that supports oral language acquisition.Instructional strategies, including teaching children to understand text structures, key details, and main ideas of a story or information text.A standards-based series of formative comprehension assessments. “Read it with the gusto it provides and deserves, and go out into your classrooms and make texts come to life through the magic of understanding!” —From the Foreword by P. David Pearson, University of California, Berkeley “This is a must-read for teachers and educators as they strive to meet the new literacy standards and improve reading comprehension outcomes for their students.” —Linda B. Gambrell, Reading Research Quarterly “The authors start with the most respected theory, add an insightful analysis of relevant Common Core standards, and combine the two with solid, practical instructional ideas. Bravo!” —James W. Cunningham, professor emeritus, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Lon Chaney Rodriguez is a typical thirteen-year-old boy. He loves horror movies. His bedroom is a mess. He doesn’t like to read boring books. And he likes to skip church to hang out at Catfish Creek during services. But his life changes completely when his mother is shot and killed at the apartment complex where she worked as a security guard. Life without her is unimaginable, and Lon is haunted by the feeling that he let his mom down. He didn’t prioritize his schoolwork, so he’s on the brink of failing. Acclaimed author and educator Ray Villareal once again writes a fast-paced novel for teens that explores the impact of making bad choices while touching on serious themes such as death and homelessness.
Finally free from prison, Grassy Knoll Shooter CIA/Mob assassin James E. Files reveals more chilling details surrounding the events that led up to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Readers who are new to the story, as well as seasoned skeptics of the Warren Commission, can follow along as Files recounts the details from the original plot to kill JFK in Chicago to the dark deed done in Dallas November 22, 1963. On that day, the United States of America experienced a coup d’état where the 35th president was taken down in a military-style ambush by the Central Intelligence Agency using Organized Crime hit men as their assassins. Only a few people are still alive who were there that day and this is the story from the man who fired the fatal headshot from the infamous grassy knoll. While James Files was incarcerated for the last 25 years, author Pamela Ray published two books he asked her to write; TO KILL A COUNTRY and Interview with History: The JFK Assassination. On the website for the book Interview with History, a Question and Answer blog was created in 2013 for the public to ask James Files questions. Included in this book is the Q & A section that Files and Ray hope will satisfy readers regarding commonly asked questions and forever put to rest some of the basic facts surrounding his truly incredible and amazing story. Final Update: James Files is now a Christian and was baptized in Lake Michigan on June 14, 2018. James Files and Pamela Ray were married in May 2018 and live in Chicago. They’ve been attending a Spirit-filled Christian church together since November 2017. “Let me stand before God to be judged. Let no mortal man judge me.” – Jimmy Sutton/ James Files
The shocking reexamination of the failures of US government officials to use available intelligence to stop the attack on American on September 11, 2001. “The authors lay bare…an intelligence failure of historic proportions.”—John Kiriakou, former CIA officer, author, The Convenient Terrorist In 2009, documentarians John Duffy and Ray Nowosielski arrived at the offices of Richard Clarke, the former counterterror adviser to Presidents Clinton and Bush. In the meeting, Clarke boldly accused one-time Central Intelligence Agency director George Tenet of “malfeasance and misfeasance” in the pre-war on terror. Thus began an incredible—never-before-told—investigative journey of intrigue about America’s intelligence community and two 9/11 hijackers. The Watchdogs Didn’t Bark details that story, unearthed over a ten-year investigation. Following the careers of a dozen counterterror employees working in different agencies of the US government from the late 1980s to the present, the book puts the government’s systems of oversight and accountability under a microscope. At the heart of this book is a mystery: Why did key 9/11 plotters Khalid Al Mihdhar and Nawaf Al Hazmi, operating inside the United States, fall onto the radars of so many US agencies without any of those agencies succeeding in stopping the attacks? The answers go beyond mere “conspiracy theory” and “deep state” actors, but instead find a complicated set of potential culprits and an easily manipulated system. Taking readers on a character-driven account of the causes of 9/11 and how the lessons of the attacks were cynically inverted to empower surveillance of citizens, kidnapping, illegal imprisonment, torture, government-sanctioned murder, and a war on whistleblowers and journalists, an alarm is raised which is more pertinent today than ever before.

Investigative journalists present explosive new evidence connecting the accused JFK assassin to the CIA—and to his own killer. Journalists Ray and Mary La Fontaine have uncovered significant new evidence in the Kennedy assassination—evidence that substantiates the existence of a conspiracy, and that suggests Lee Harvey Oswald was framed for the president’s murder. In Oswald Talked, they establish a crucial link between Oswald and Jack Ruby, the CIA, and other government agencies. Among the evidence uncovered here is a Department of Defense card showing that Oswald was employed by the US government after his discharge from the Marines; testimony by a man who altered photos of Oswald for the official investigation; and arrest records and names of the three enigmatic vagrants who have been at the heart of several conspiracy theories. Most significant of all, the La Fontaines speak with John Elrod, who was arrested the day of Kennedy’s assassination—and kept in a cell next to Oswald’s. His incarceration had been hidden by the FBI for decades. In Oswald Talked, they reveal what Elrod learned from Oswald himself that day.
What does it mean to be a God-glorifying baseball player? This book is a detailed theological analysis of blindness in the Hebrew Bible. It explores blindness in the context of religion, law codes, theodicy, social justice, and healing. McAllister first considers the wider context of ancient Near Eastern cultures before analyzing various words for blindness found in the Hebrew Bible. The focus then shifts to examining blindness in various blocks of material, in the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings, before synthesizing the findings. This book is excellent for scholars and students interested in better understanding disability in the context of the Bible and the ancient Near East.
