We've all heard the saying, too much of a good thing.Ó This can apply to many of the actions and behaviors that would be called virtues.Ó By overemphasizing certain traits, Christians can lose spiritual balance. In this book, veteran counselor and author Ray Anderson offers a study of fourteen Christian virtues designed to help you develop the balance that is key to a mature Christian faith. After providing a detailed explanation of each virtue, Anderson gives a unique look at how to keep a good virtue from turning bad through overemphasis. If you seek balance in your walk with Christ, 'Living the Spiritually Balanced Life' can help. Let it show you how to build up your spiritual well-being and to help others who are struggling on the same path take the first step toward a more fruitful spiritual life.
First published in 1990, this title provides a compendium of useful information for any reader of Donne to have at hand: crucial biographical material, historical contextualisation, and details about his life’s work. The intention throughout is to enhance understanding and appreciation, without being exhaustive. The major portion of the volume, in both importance and size, is ‘A Donne Dictionary’. Its entries are arranged alphabetically: they identify, describe and explain the most influential persons in Donne’s life and works, as well as places, characters, allusions, ideas, concepts, individual words, phrases and literary terms that are relevant to a rounded appreciation of his poetry and prose. A Jonne Donne Companion will prove invaluable for all students of English poetry and Anglican theology.
Todays seedlings are tomorrows giants. A seedling however needs a good first few weeks. Were talking about people of course: new Christians seeking good first weeks with the Lord. The First 100 Days offers guidance and encouragement for new Christians who want their seedling faith to grow strong. Its a devotional approach with long meaning captured in short treatments of scripture, comments, and prayers. In spite of their brevity, these devotions are keys that open doors into great rooms of life truth. Weve printed suggested Bible texts for further study along with each days material. Seedlings reach upward, stretch outward, and grow new limbs and leaves. Were talking about people of course. The First 100 Days provides the kind of fertilizer and cultivation that can help a tender young faith reach upward. As the child of God begins to walk with Him over lifes hills and through the valleys, we claim His promise that the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines brighter and brighter until the full day (Proverbs 4:18 New American Standard Bible). These pages and thoughts are offered in the prayer that todays seedling Christians will find that promise true in the future, just as todays giants in the faith have found it true in the past.

If the emerging church movement is looking for a theology, Ray Anderson offers clear and relevant theological guidance for it in this timely book. Reaching back through time, Anderson roots an emergent theology in what happened at Antioch, where Saul (Paul) and Barnabas were set apart for a mission to establish churches outside of Jerusalem--among Gentiles who had to be reached in their own cultures. He shows how the Lord Holy Spirit himself revolutionized and inspired how the message of salvation was offered to others, and provided a model to follow. Explaining that an emergent theology is messianic, revelational, kingdom-coming and eschatological, this book adresses many of the concerns of those looking for a church that is contemporary, yet true to the gospel. If you wrestle with the challenges that face the church in these "postmodern" days, you will benefit from this book.
Some people remember their dreams clearly, while others never do. Some people even see events in their dreams that actually come to pass. The Bible tells stories of those who had dreams. God has spoken to people in dreams as well, and he uses dreams to reveal events that will happen in peoples lives. In The Number-One Thing with God, author Ray Fletcher provides an account of the dreams revealed to him by God. Some of these dreams have come true, while others have yet to become a reality. He tells of dreams of beauty and comfort and others that were dreams of terror. Fletcher describes the wonder of what it was like to be with Jesus and see Gods light. Fletcher experienced dreams about the future and the end of time that compelled him to issue a warning to others to be ready to face the day of eternal judgment. Through the dreams, God disclosed the most important factor: he wants his people to love him with all their hearts as he loves them. A guide for staying on course, The Number-One Thing with God presents a message about faith and preparing oneself for an eternity with God.

Calvinism: A Southern Baptist Dialogue holds a theological conversation among followers of Christ about issues on which they often disagree. And while such controversial points of doctrine cannot be ignored, neither should they put up impenetrable walls between groups committed to the same essential Christian beliefs. New presentations from Daniel Akin, Tom Ascol, David Dockery, Charles Lawless, Ed Stetzer, and others address misperceptions, stereotypes, and caricatures of the debate over Reformed theology, each one seeking a deeper understanding of the gospel, improved health of our churches, and the kingdom of Christ above all. To see a Theonomy style in Church Management the 21st century church must take a step back to see our future. Over the years, people planted notions that people we are made to serve the church. We believe that we were fashioned for the survival of the church organization, but the opposite of this is true, the church organization is fashioned for the survival of its people. In our churches, we are realizing this truth as we begin looking for Whose in Charge and the Church to become more responsive to the mission of/for its community survival. When the Church has fully lived up to its mission, then we will see an immersion into a changing of management style. This change is the returning to where we started; it is projecting us into our future a re-doing of what the first Church did so well in Gods theonomy.
Baker, Conrad, Angus, and Masaccio are high school teachers who occasionally meet to jam as a crude alt-rock garage band. They are also diehard hockey fans desperate to see an end to their beloved Toronto Mighty Pines’ fifty-seven year Cup drought. But another early playoff exit soon has the foursome resolving to support the team in ways beyond just cheering. Enlisting the vocal talents of a new teacher named Perreault, the weekend rockers restyle themselves as a musical coven and decide to call on supernatural forces for help with their hockey woes. By transforming popular song lyrics into hockey spells, they create a magical playlist of tunes and dip their toes into witchcraft. A bit of help from a seasoned Wiccan and her talented apprentice impacts the five fans’ world in subtle ways, tuning them into the love, loss, and mystery saturating their ordinary lives. Will any of it serve to bring the Clarence Cup, hockey’s Holy Grail, back to the city of Toronto? That depends, of course, on how the Mighty Pines fare during an erratic and unpredictable 2019-2020 season—a season like few others, and one that will leave more than just the Pines’ fortunes in question.
Disciples of Christ in America must live out and express their faith in practical, meaningful ways in the "real world" including the political process. Our failure to provide leadership in our culture and the political process has resulted in the many negatives that are now taking place in the US. Believers must see engagement with the political process as a natural expression of their relationship with God. Ray Miller suggests practical and holistic ways in which we can live out our faith through this involvement and become engaged long-term in the political process.
The Beatles wrote 176 of the greatest songs ever to appear in popular music. This songbook includes every single one of them. Each piece is arranged for easy Guitar, with melody lines, chord diagrams and full lyrics. These simplified arrangements are accompanied by original photographs and some of the strangest, full-colour illustrations to ever grace a book. The wonderfully surreal presentation, along with an absorbing article by Ray Connolly, makes this a commemorative collectible as much as a book of music.

There is very much written about what Jesus says throughout the New Testament. So I captured some of the key topics and expounded on what Jesus specifically has to say. Some of my personal thoughts and experiences are interwoven into the topical stories that concerned me and have an impact on my life. The list of topics seems endless, but I’ve carefully chosen the most common questions and themes that people ask about. From my perspective, simplicity equals transparency. “I’m not moved by what I see, but I am moved by what is in the hearts and minds of people,” I think. Consequently, I’ve chosen to simplify the message without diving too deep. While quoting scriptures, I’ve used the NIV version of the Bible, unless otherwise noted differently.
Your faith is challenged daily. We live in a society that has few absolutes, where “truth” is defined by personal philosophies. It’s really not so different from the culture of Corinth during the apostle Paul’s ministry. Believers were struggling with the “gray areas” of life, so Paul wrote letters—1 and 2 Corinthians—to remind them of what God intended as black-and-white. In Letters to a Troubled Church, Bible teacher Ray Stedman uses Paul’s epistles to guide us through difficult matters.

Who were Catholicism’s greatest orators? What was the key to their effectiveness? Was it mere scholastic ability or spiritual inspiration? The answer is “both.” In this follow-up work, Father Ray E. Atwood examines the lives, theologies, and preaching examples of the Church’s greatest preachers. This book tells the story, in biographical form, of Catholic preaching from the Old Testament through today, concluding with the homilies of Benedict XVI. Masters of Preaching takes the reader around the world in search of homiletic gems. Readers will learn about the stories of familiar figures, such as Saint Gregory the Great, and less familiar figures, such as Monsignor Francis Friedl. Readers will also discover how these men moved their congregations to deeper faith and greater understanding of the mysteries of salvation. Two appendices at the end of the book serve as a terrific resource for those looking for practical illustrations of lectionary themes. This book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the subjects of public speaking and Church history.
In this theological memoir, Ray Anderson takes us on his own journey from the prairie to the pulpit, and from the soul of a believer into the soul of a theologian. As a sequel to his earlier book, 'The Soul of Ministry', he shares with us the process by which his own spiritual hunger moved from uneasiness and unrest into a deeper sense of the soul of theology as exploration into the very soul of God (Part One). In Part Two, each chapter traces out the contours of a theology which sings as well as stings. After more than 40 years of ministry as pastor, teacher and theologian, Anderson presents a theological hermeneutic by which Scripture and human experience can be read on the same page. If reading this book produces astonishment and wonder at the depth and daring to which God's grace encounters and embraces us through Jesus Christ, then that itself will lead us, with awe and reverence, to behold the soul of God.
No one has contributed more substantially to creative, orthodox Christian thinking about human nature, pastoral theology, and counseling over the past 30 years than Ray Anderson. His latest book is most welcomed, particularly given its focus on the family, a pivotal cultural institution of obvious developmental importance, which radical postmodernism has attempted to radically redefine, but which always warrants a fresh, practical, Christian approach and critique."" --Eric L. Johnson, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary ""Combining the wisdom accumulated in his years as a seminary professor and scholar, pastor, and counselor, Ray Anderson has given us an outstanding book on marriage and family ministry in contemporary culture. Even more than this, it is the best statement I know of on a theology of the family, including the place of family in the church and wider society. . . . [H]ard issues in family life such as violence and abuse, homosexuality, care for the elderly, and death are addressed with a combination of biblical truth and grace. Something Old, Something New is must reading for all persons involved in ministry today!"" --Jack Balswick, Fuller Graduate School of Psychology ""For a Church often despairing of biblically based resources in ministering to the family in our postmodern culture, Ray Anderson's twenty-fifth book focuses on recovering a theology of the family. His seminal volume (written with Dennis Guernsey), On Being Family: Toward a Social Theology of the Family (1985), virtually created the new genre of the 'theology of the family.' In Something Old, Something New: Marriage and Family Ministry in a Postmodern Culture, we find the fruit of Anderson's mature reflections that will give hope and guidance to the Church of the twenty-first century. He discusses marriage and parenting, divorce and remarriage, singleness and cohabitation, and other issues within the diversity and relativity characterized by our postmodern context. His decades of experience as a seminary professor and church pastor enable him to articulate a theology of family ministry that offers concrete help for families, churches, and pastors based on the healing ministry of Christ in today's society."" --Chris Kettler, Friends University, and Todd Speidell, Webb School of Knoxville RAY S. ANDERSON (1925-2009) was Senior Professor of Theology and Ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary where he has taught for more than thirty years. He is the author of more than twenty-five books, including, The Seasons of Hope, Marriage and Family Ministry in a Postmodern Culture, The Soul of Ministry, Ministry on the Fireline, and The Shape of Practical Theology.
A Christian systematic theologian should read widely, think deeply, and share ideas concerning the biblical meaning of Christian Faith (as do biblical theologians). But for systematics the decisive focus is on the normative significance of Christian faith for today, having taken account of insights from various disciplines, from biblical and historical theology in particular, and from the systematic theologies that one finds helpful. In its critical and constructive effort this volume is much indebted to the writings of a wide range of systematic and biblical theologians. Sometimes in the background but often in the foreground is biblical analysis and interpretation. This writing never just expounds the ideas of particular systematic or biblical theologians, but utilizes them where helpful for articulating Christian Faith.
First published in 1995, this title provides the reader with a compendium of useful information for any reader of George Herbert to have at hand. It includes key biographical information, situates the poetry in its historical and cultural context, and, where appropriate, explains theological concepts and traditions which have a direct bearing on the verse. The aim throughout is to enhance understanding and appreciation, without being exhaustive. A George Herbert Companion will be of most use to general readers and undergraduate students coming to this poetry for the first time, and will interest students of Anglican Caroline theology and hymnology.
Learning a First Language is a complex and beautifully crafted collection of skillfully interwoven poetry and prose that explores the themes of memory, regret, hope and the relationship between art and passion. It begins with "love", a reactionary "stream of consciousness" poem written in response to an unexpected and unsolicited marriage proposal, and ends with the final chapter of the author's meandering narrative account of a character known only as "The Artist". His story twists and turns its way through the text, shedding light on both the inspirations and contrary emotions that shape Ray's poetry. Blending elements of fiction and memoir, this collection provides readers not only with a glimpse into the author's personal experiences with love and loss, but also with a universal love story that reminds us of the importance and necessity of loving with abandon.
