Hunter Littlejohn was five foot three inches tall, one hundred ten pounds and ablaze with curiosity and the desire for adventure. Her ambitions as well as her disposition were well suited to her flaming red hair. She had a small, upturned nose, sprinkled with freckles and the lilywhite complexion of one of those unique creatures described as a true redhead. Her eyes were emerald green and her lips were full and sensuous, but the set of her jaw usually kept suitors at bay. However, with her shapely legs, full breasts and tiny waist, no man could ignore her, and all would require at least a second look. She treated these admirers with distain, and still they dreamed about her in their most secret fantasies. This was not the case with Nicholas Kane. Hunter couldn’t for the life of her figure out how to handle this tall, handsome and purely ornery mountain man. Kane was as ruthless and dangerous as he was handsome. She wanted to go west to look for her fiancé, and her best friend Quincy had told her Kane was the only man for the job. Her problem was that Kane refused to take her. At their first meeting, they instinctively hated each other. Eventually she kidnapped Kane, and in the company of her best friend, several muleskinners and two soiled doves from a local saloon, they left Chicago and headed for the Nevada goldfields...

For Aloysius Tucker, taking his nine-year-old cousin Maria sledding is all about frozen toes and hot coffee in the warming house. It shouldn't involve chasing after Maria as she's led into a long black car by a stranger in a Bruins jacket. But by the end of the crisp December morning Maria is gone, her mother is dead, and her father—mafia don Sal—has been arrested for murder. Sensing blood in the water, would-be successors to Sal's criminal empire square off, agreeing on nothing but the idea that Sal's blood relative, Tucker, needs to be eliminated. Searching for Maria through sub-zero days and nights, Tucker persists even as his relentless efforts draw him into a deadly crossfire between every power-hungry crook in Boston. Praise: "Daniel is more than generous with the violence, guilt, tweets, craft brews, and compassion."—Kirkus Reviews "[An] enjoyable if complex third book of murder and mayhem with a...satisfying whirlwind of a resolution."—Publishers Weekly "The third Tucker outing features a gripping plot and engaging characters who are sure to satisfy readers of Vincent Lardo, Joseph Finder, and John Hart."—Library Journal "By any measure, [Child Not Found] is a terrific book. It's got a gripping plot, characters so real you can feel them, and a narrative voice that grips you by the heart and won't let go. A terrific read!"—John Gilstrap, author of Friendly Fire and the Jonathan Grave thriller series

This volume focuses on the religious shrine in western India as an institution of cultural integration in the period spanning 200 BCE to 800 CE. It presents an analysis of religious architecture at multiple levels, both temporal and spatial, and distinguishes it as a ritual instrument that integrates individuals and communities into a cultural fabric. The work shows how these structures emphasise on communication with a host of audiences such as the lay worshipper, the ritual specialist, the royalty and the elite as well as the artisan and the sculptor. It also examines religious imagery, inscriptions, traditional lore and Sanskrit literature. The book will be of special interest to researchers and scholars of ancient Indian history, Hinduism, religious studies, architecture and South Asian studies.
A bride, a groom, and a lover. One will die, another will hang, and the survivor will begin an obsessive 20-year odyssey to discover the truth. Three people caught up in the harsh class differences and religious and racial prejudices of Victorian Canada, where a vast new territory—the "Queen's Bush"—is being opened to settlement in Ontario's Georgian Bay country. Inspired by the true lives of Rosannah Leppard and Cook Teets, An Act of Injustice follows disgruntled newspaperman Leonard Babington in a combination courtroom drama, murder mystery, and meditation on the moral malaise of Victorian Canada. His obsession plunges him into the labyrinth world of Ottawa power politics, the salons of a smug "Toronto the Good," and the licentiousness of the city's Insane Asylum. With literary distinction and storytelling mastery, this historical novel brings the urgency of today's headlines to the struggle for romance, justice, and equality in a young, 20th century Canada.
The history of animated cartoons has for decades been dominated by the accomplishments of Walt Disney, giving the impression that he invented the medium. In reality, it was the work of several pioneers. Max Fleischer--inventor of the Rotoscope technique of tracing animation frame by frame over live-action footage--was one of the most prominent. By the 1930s, Fleischer and Disney were the leading producers of animated films but took opposite approaches. Where Disney reflected a Midwestern sentimentality, Fleischer presented a sophisticated urban attitude with elements of German Expressionism and organic progression. In contrast to Disney's naturalistic animation, Fleischer's violated physical laws, supporting his maxim: "If it can be done in real life, it isn't animation." As a result, Fleischer's cartoons were rough rather than refined, commercial rather than consciously artistic--yet attained a distinctive artistry through Fleischer's innovations. This book covers his life and work and the history of the studio that bore his name, with previously unpublished artwork and photographs.
From the Roman Praetorian Guard to the English shire-reeve to the U.S. marshals, lawmen have a long and varied history. At first, such groups were often corrupt, guilty of advancing a political agenda rather than protecting citizens. It was about the turn of the twentieth century that police officers as we know them came into being. At this time, a number of police reforms such as civil service and police unions were developed. Citizen committees were formed to oversee police function. About this same time, the technology of motion pictures was being advanced. Movies evolved from silent films with a limited budget and short running time to films with sound whose budget was ever rising and whose audience demanded longer, more complex story lines. From the infancy of moviemaking, lawmen of various types were popular subjects. Bounty hunters, sheriffs, private eyes, detectives and street officers--often portrayed by some of Hollywood's biggest names--have been depicted in every conceivable way. Compiled from a comprehensive examination of the material in question, this volume provides a critical-historical analysis of law enforcement in American cinema. From High Noon to The Empire Strikes Back, it examines the police in their many incarnations with emphasis on the ways in which lawmen are portrayed and how this portrayal changes over time. Each film discussed reveals something about society, subtly commenting on social conditions, racial issues and government interventions. Major historical events such as the Great Depression, World War II and the McCarthy trials find their way into many of these films. Significant film genres from science fiction to spaghetti western are represented. Films examined include Easy Street (1917), a nominal comedy starring Charlie Chaplin; Star Packer, a 1934 John Wayne film; The Maltese Falcon (1941) with Humphrey Bogart; Dirty Harry, a 1971 Clint Eastwood classic; Leslie Nielsen's spoof Naked Gun (1988); and 1993's Tombstone featuring Kurt Russell. The filmography contains a synopsis along with information on director, screenplay, starring actors and year of production. Photographs and an index are also included.
