Considers the politics of low-level and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal (high-level waste is another kettle of [toxic] fish altogether, just now beginning to enter the political arena) from a comparative international perspective in order to discover what factors impinge upon the overriding need for legitimate and publicly acceptable solutions. UNAIDS reports more than one million Americans are living with HIV, and unfortunately more than 17,000 people died from it last year. Despite modern treatments and prevention, more than 50,000 people a year contract the virus, including author Ray Selvage. Fortunately for Ray, he and his wife have developed a system of treatments to prolong their lives in spite of the affliction. Living with the Virus explores Ray Selvage's personal experience with HIV infection and the current biological and social issues facing those who are infected. Ray describes how HIV is spread and can be prevented. He discusses common HIV medications, the side effects of those medications, the four stages of the virus's progression, and illnesses associated with each of those stages. 'Living with the Virus is a welcomed addition for patients and families coping with HIV infection and its complications, especially those who are newly-infected and feel overwhelmed. I look forward to sharing it with my patients.' John W. Baddley, MD, MSPH Chief, Infectious Disease Section Birmingham VA Medical Center
In spite of decades of school reform, the achievement gap between English learners and English-proficient students has narrowed little. This book introduces a Reform Sustainability Framework that focuses on the examination of fundamental school structures required to ensure English learner success while guiding the school leader in handling the reform terrain deftly. This reform-navigation tool identifies patterns and trends in the deployment of a reform and subsequently allows leaders to make necessary adjustments to extend, accelerate, or terminate a given reform. Bridging the English Learner Achievement Gap offers a compelling, research-grounded way for schools with an English learner population to successfully educate their students. This book: highlights the challenge of meeting the academic needs of English learners; introduces a step-by-step process for educators at any level to ensure reform sustainability; and examines the processes, tools, and structures needed to anchor successful school reform.
This volume provides school-based practitioners with a comprehensive and comparative guide to the strategic interventions, therapeutic modalities, and treatment approaches that are most commonly and effectively used in educational settings. Three main sections of the text present a foundation of universal interventions, targeted interventions, and alternative interventions appropriate for use in schools. Unifying the chapters are two central case examples, allowing the reader to see and evaluate the strengths and potential challenges of each technique in a familiar situation. This emphasis on case examples and the comparative structure of the volume will provide a level of hands-on and practical learning that is helpful for both students and mental health practitioners working in schools for the first time, and as a resource for more seasoned professionals who need to expand the tools at their disposal.
This book is about formal veri?cation, that is, the use of mathematical reasoning to ensure correct execution of computing systems. With the increasing use of c- puting systems in safety-critical and security-critical applications, it is becoming increasingly important for our well-being to ensure that those systems execute c- rectly. Over the last decade, formal veri?cation has made signi?cant headway in the analysis of industrial systems, particularly in the realm of veri?cation of hardware. A key advantage of formal veri?cation is that it provides a mathematical guarantee of their correctness (up to the accuracy of formal models and correctness of r- soning tools). In the process, the analysis can expose subtle design errors. Formal veri?cation is particularly effective in ?nding corner-case bugs that are dif?cult to detect through traditional simulation and testing. Nevertheless, and in spite of its promise, the application of formal veri?cation has so far been limited in an ind- trial design validation tool ?ow. The dif?culties in its large-scale adoption include the following (1) deductive veri?cation using theorem provers often involves - cessive and prohibitive manual effort and (2) automated decision procedures (e. g. , model checking) can quickly hit the bounds of available time and memory. This book presents recent advances in formal veri?cation techniques and d- cusses the applicability of the techniques in ensuring the reliability of large-scale systems. We deal with the veri?cation of a range of computing systems, from - quential programsto concurrentprotocolsand pipelined machines.
