This book is about the difficulty of serving in local government. It's about finding meaning in public service and developing a deep sense of pride in making a difference to the well being of our communities. I wrote this book to provide hope and guidance to my colleagues in administration and their political partners as they work through difficult times and climb over tremendous obstacles. It is a true story that shows what can be achieved when we are prepared to lead, when we instill a sense of urgency in the workplace culture, when we act to become part of the solution and not part of the problem, when we encourage people to have fun in the workplace, when we show people we truly care about them as human beings, when we reach out to solve contentious issues without the traditional adversarial techniques, when we become accessible as managers to clients, staff and City Councillors and when we tirelessly seek to communicate from the top to the bottom and across the silos through to the clients and back again to Council. It provides important insights on how to manage the complex and often strained relationship between administration and elected officials. It shows what can be achieved when we work as a team regardless of our administrative or political roles towards shared goals. It's about striving for success, not as a goal, but as a journey that never ends. -- To purchase a copy of Randy Diehl's book, please visit: ...
Don't Shoot the Horse" is simply a book of encouragement, offering hope to the reader. Hayess unique way of looking at things will help to inspire Christians to notice the many gifts the Savior bestows daily. (Practical Life)
The air buzzed with whispers as the church members awaited the arrival of the speaker. The senior and associate pastors blitzed down the aisle to meet me in the foyer. The senior pastor panted. "I'm glad to meet you! Our associate pastor here made a mistake. He forgot to check with me before proceeding to invite you to speak on this subject. I don't think...I mean, we don't think it would be an appropriate subject to expose the congregation to at this time." The associate pastor apologized. They escorted me back through the entry doors... The subject of sexual abuse was definitely a touchy one, but one that Thomas Edward felt was necessary to have a frank discussion about. Now, in his book, Christians Get Stuck Too, Edward confronts issues that many Christians face but are hesitant to broach: sexual abuse, addictions, pornography, teen pregnancy, and more. Thomas's personal story of rejection from the Christian community as a male survivor of sexual abuse is daunting. His laborious journey toward healing prepared and strengthened his resolve to step forward as an advocate to shatter the silence and help others. He is unflinching in his discussion of touchy topics. Referencing actual life coaching sessions, he exposes a myriad of problems and vulnerabilities experienced by us all. Edward uses facts, scripture, examples, anecdotes and modules that anyone can use to work toward getting unstuck.

This book develops and tests an ecological and evolutionary theory of the causes of human values—the core beliefs that guide people’s cognition and behavior—and their variation across time and space around the world. We call this theory the parasite-stress theory of values or the parasite-stress theory of sociality. The evidence we present in our book indicates that both a wide span of human affairs and major aspects of human cultural diversity can be understood in light of variable parasite (infectious disease) stress and the range of value systems evoked by variable parasite stress. The same evidence supports the hypothesis that people have psychological adaptations that function to adopt values dependent upon local infectious-disease adversity. The authors have identified key variables, variation in infectious disease adversity and in the core values it evokes, for understanding these topics and in novel and encompassing ways. Although the human species is the focus in the book, evidence presented in the book shows that the parasite-stress theory of sociality informs other topics in ecology and evolutionary biology such as variable family organization and speciation processes and biological diversity in general in non-human animals.
Contracts: Cases and Doctrine features a mix of lightly-edited classic and contemporary cases that stresses current contract doctrine along with the essential lawyering skill of case analysis—how to sift through the facts of the case to discern the prevailing rules and theory. Randy Barnett and Nate Oman’s innovative text introduces each case and provides the historical background of the iconic cases that make the study of contract law engaging. Study Guide questions help students identify salient issues as they read each case. Judicial biographies of each judge provide additional context. The Seventh Edition has been edited to delete materials that are seldom covered in a 1L class. This edition adds new cases that have been chosen for their topicality, facts, or pedagogical usefulness. New areas covered include so-called “smart contracts” and the relationship between restitution and contract. As always, we have tried to focus on cases with facts that will be easier to teach. New cases in this edition include a contract with a spy that turns out to be a double agent for the KGB, the effect of pandemics on contractual obligations, the gambling shenanigans of a royal prince, and emotional support animals. New to the Seventh Edition: In order to keep the size of the book manageable, we have eliminated the section on the signature requirement under the statute of frauds and have slimmed down the materials on internet contracting, which is no longer the “cutting edge” area that once it was. New cases include: Attorney General v. Blake (restitution damages for breach of contract against a British spy who defected to the USSR) Snepp v. United States (squib) (constructive trust against an American spy for breach of contract) Al-Ibrahim v. Edde (denied an unjust enrichment remedy to unwind a contact declared unenforceable for illegality) Pelletier v. Johnson (claim for unjust enrichment allowed to unwind a contract declared unenforceable for illegality) Carter Baron Drilling v. Badger Oil Corp. (discussing the parole evidence rule under the UCC) C.R. Klewin Inc. v. Flagship Properties, Inc. (the exception to the 1-year requirement under the statute of frauds) Cohen v. Clark (case imposing liability on a breaching party that everyone agrees breached in “good faith”; illustrates the strictness of contractual liability) Hanford v. Connecticut Fair Ass’n, Inc. (public policy exception for public health in time of a pandemic) B2C2 Ltd v. Quoine Ltd Pte (unilateral mistake case dealing with “smart contracts”) Professors and student will benefit from: Case-based approach that gives students ample doctrinal materials to sift through for facts and analyze for prevailing rules and theory. Cases that are lightly edited, or presented as whole as possible, to give first-year students the opportunity to develop case-analysis skills. Restatement and UCC sections integrated to encourage students to consult them as they read the cases. Iconic and contemporary cases combined to show how the classic cases are still relevant. Chapters that begin with a brief, accessible textual introductions. Study Guide questions before each case help focus student attention on salient issues. Flexible organization begins with Remedies, but chapters can be taught in any order.

Left Field, Reloaded" is artist/author Randy Halford's second cartoon book collection of everything else in the world. Humans, animals, insects, the entertainment industry, and yes, even modern technology such as mobile phones get satirized to the nth degree. Cleverly funny and contagiously silly, "Left Field, Reloaded" has a little something for everyone to enjoy!
Karen Carpenter was the instantly recognisable lead singer of the Carpenters. The top-selling American musical act of the 1970s, they delivered the love songs that defined a generation. Karen's velvety voice on a string of 16 consecutive Top 20 hits from 1970 to 1976 – including Close to You, We've Only Just Begun, Rainy Days and Mondays, Superstar, and Hurting Each Other – propelled the duo to worldwide stardom and record sales of over 100 million. Karen's musical career was short – only 13 years. During that time, the Carpenters released 10 studio albums, toured more than 200 days a year, taped five television specials, and won three Grammys and an American Music Award. But that's only part of Karen's story. As the world received news of her death at 32 years of age in 1983, she became the proverbial poster child for anorexia nervosa. Little Girl Blue is an intimate profile of Karen Carpenter, a girl from a modest Connecticut upbringing who became a Superstar. Based on exclusive interviews with nearly 100 friends and associates, including record producers, studio musicians, songwriters, television directors, photographers, radio personalities, classmates, childhood friends, neighbours, personal assistants, romantic interests, hairdressers, and housekeepers.'...thorough and affectionate biography of a singer who's been constantly undervalued by the music industry.' MOJO 'Schmidt cannot be faulted... carefully factual, sensitively pitched book.' The Word 'The first truly convincing account of her nightmarish story.' The Guardian
Harrison Kerr (1897-1978) is probably best known for his efforts to foster an understanding of twentieth-century American music, but his achievements as a teacher, administrator, and composer are equally important. The present volume presents an extensive biography of Kerr and detailed analyses of three representative musical works with explanations.

It provides fire service professionals with the necessary communication, leadership, and decision-making tools to operate safely and effectively under stressful conditions. Although the concept of crew resource management has been around since the 1970s, this is the first book to apply C( to the fire service industry.
The rollicking memoir from the cardiologist turned legendary scientist and winner of the Nobel Prize that revels in the joy of science and discovery. Like Richard Feynman in the field of physics, Dr. Robert Lefkowitz is also known for being a larger-than-life character: a not-immodest, often self-deprecating, always entertaining raconteur. Indeed, when he received the Nobel Prize, the press corps in Sweden covered him intensively, describing him as “the happiest Laureate.” In addition to his time as a physician, from being a "yellow beret" in the public health corps with Dr. Anthony Fauci to his time as a cardiologist, and his extraordinary transition to biochemistry, which would lead to his Nobel Prize win, Dr. Lefkowitz has ignited passion and curiosity as a fabled mentor and teacher. But it's all in a days work, as Lefkowitz reveals in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Stockholm, which is filled to the brim with anecdotes and energy, and gives us a glimpse into the life of one of today's leading scientists.
This book presents evidence that infection is cyclical with the seasons, and that this phenomenon is mirrored in cycles of immune function. The book identifies the mechanisms by which immune systems are bolstered to counteract seasonally-recurrent stressors, such as extreme temperature reductions and food shortages. Stress, infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases, and human cancers are examined, and the role of hormones such as melatonin and glucocorticoids is considered. The book begins with an overview of seasonality, biological rhythms and photoperiodism, and basic immunology, and then discusses seasonal fluctuations in disease prevalence, immune function, and energetics and endocrinology as they relate to immune function. The clinical significance of this issue is also addressed, as such seasonal changes may play an important role in the development and treatment of infections. This first monograph to examine seasonal immune function from an interdisciplinary perspective will serve practitioners as well as advanced undergraduates and graduate students in biology, immunology, human and veterinary medicine, neuroscience, endocrinology, and zoology.
