There are two major ideologies at play in our country right now, and they are diametrically opposed. Conservatism is minimalism and personal; Liberalism is expansive and group think. Conservatism is about small government controlled by the governed and personal responsibility. Liberalism is about expanding government and the government acting as caregiver and lack of personal responsibility (victimhood).In this work, I examine the major issues of the day and contrast the two ideologies using logic and sound thinking to come to a reasonable conclusion. The issues include: Are gays born that way or is it a choice? Since Darwin’s theory is still theory, why does all of science rest on it? Regarding our universe, is it only Darwin or creationism? Is popular science scientific? Gun control or self-defense? Why does the Supreme Court rule the way it does? The NEA—who’s the priority, students or teachers? The ACLU—protector or protagonist? Do we still need affirmative action? Do Liberals live in their own alternate universe? Are Black leaders stuck in the past? What about the Tea Party Movement? What is the military’s place in modern life? Are America’s best days in the past? These and other questions are examined in A Conservative Writes about Damn Near Everything. I stopped writing so I wouldn’t have to delete Damn Near. I assume you’re at least as smart as I am and are looking for more information. I believe I’ve delivered. Let’s continue the conversation so we can figure the best way to return our country to its rightful place as preeminent among nations. That’s the brilliance and prescience of our founders, our inheritance, and as proud Americans, our work order. We gave those with a different view an opportunity to show us their brighter tomorrow. What we got was potted meat for filet mignon. The experiment failed. Let’s scrap it and get back to what works so we can get back to work. Let those who think “profit” is a four-letter word get rid of theirs; we’ll keep ours and expand it. That’s what Conservatism does. Viva la difference.

The Atlantic slave trade was the largest forced migration in history, and its toll in lives damaged or destroyed is incalculable. Most of those stories are lost to history, making the few that can be reconstructed critical to understanding the trade in all its breadth and variety. Randy J. Their stories highlight the diversity of struggles that confronted every African who arrived on American shores. The subjects of Africans in the Old South include Elizabeth Cleveland Hardcastle, the mixed-race daughter of an African slave-trading family who invested in South Carolina rice plantations and slaves, passed as white, and integrated herself into the Lowcountry planter elite; Robert Johnson, kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Georgia, who later learned English, won his freedom, and joined the abolition movement in the North; Dimmock Charlton, who bought his freedom after being illegally enslaved in Savannah; and a group of unidentified Africans who were picked up by a British ship in the Caribbean, escaped in Mobile’s port, and were recaptured and eventually returned to their homeland. These exceptional lives challenge long-held assumptions about how the slave trade operated and who was involved. The African Atlantic was a complex world characterized by constant movement, intricate hierarchies, and shifting identities. Not all Africans who crossed the Atlantic were enslaved, nor was the voyage always one-way.

This book develops and tests an ecological and evolutionary theory of the causes of human values—the core beliefs that guide people’s cognition and behavior—and their variation across time and space around the world. We call this theory the parasite-stress theory of values or the parasite-stress theory of sociality. The evidence we present in our book indicates that both a wide span of human affairs and major aspects of human cultural diversity can be understood in light of variable parasite (infectious disease) stress and the range of value systems evoked by variable parasite stress. The same evidence supports the hypothesis that people have psychological adaptations that function to adopt values dependent upon local infectious-disease adversity. The authors have identified key variables, variation in infectious disease adversity and in the core values it evokes, for understanding these topics and in novel and encompassing ways. Although the human species is the focus in the book, evidence presented in the book shows that the parasite-stress theory of sociality informs other topics in ecology and evolutionary biology such as variable family organization and speciation processes and biological diversity in general in non-human animals.

Conflict was inevitable as older generations attempted to preserve their traditions, values, and ethnic identities, while the young sought out the cheap amusements and sexual freedom which the urban landscape offered. At immigrant picnics, social clubs, and urban dance halls, Randy McBee discovers distinct and highly contested gender lines, proving that the battle between the ages was also one between the sexes. Free from their parents and their strict rules governing sexual conduct, working women took advantage of their time in dance halls to challenge conventional gender norms. They routinely passed certain men over for dances, refused escorts home, and embraced the sensual and physical side of dance to further accentuate their superior skills and ability on the dance floor. Most men felt threatened by women's displays of empowerment and took steps to thwart the changes taking place. Accustomed to street corners, poolrooms, saloons, and other all-male get-togethers, working men tried to transform the dance hall into something that resembled these familiar hangouts. McBee also finds that men frequently abandoned the commercial dance hall for their own clubs, set up in the basements of tenement flats. In these hangouts, working men established rules governing intimacy and leisure that allowed them to regulate the behavior of the women who attended club events. The collective manner in which they behaved not only affected the organization of commercial leisure but also men and women's struggles with and against one another to define the meaning of leisure, sexuality, intimacy, and even masculinity.
