Sarah Margaret Fuller Ossoli (1810-1850) received a broad education and early felt a deep interest in social questions. She learned French, German and the classics, and her associates in Cambridge were persons of culture, experience and advanced ideas. In 1833 the family removed to Groton, Mass., where she gave lessons to private classes in languages and other studies. In 1836 she went to Boston, where she taught Latin and French in A. Bronson Alcott's school, and taught private classes of girls in French, German and Italian. In 1837 she became a teacher in a private school in Providence, R. I., which was organized on Mr. Alcott's plan. She translated many works from the German and other languages. In 1839 she instituted in Boston her conversational class, which was continued for several years. She did much writing on subjects connected with her educational work. In 1840 she became the editor of "The Dial." which she managed for two years. Her contributions to the journal were numerous. Several volumes of translations from the German were brought out by her. In 1843 she went on a western tour with James Freeman Clarke and his artist-sister, and her first original work, "Summer on the Lakes," was the result of that trip. In 1844 she removed to New York City, where for two years she furnished literary criticisms for the "Tribune." In 1846 she published her volume. "Papers on Literature and Art." After twenty months of life in New York she went to Europe, she met in Italy, in 1847, Giovani Angelo, Marquis Ossoli, a man younger than she and of less intellectual culture, but a simple and noble man, who had given up his rank and station in the cause of the Roman Republic. They were married in 1847. After the fall of the republic it was necessary for them to leave Rome, and Madame Ossoli, desiring to print in America her history of the Italian struggle, suggested their return to the United States.

Ralph attended public high school in Ogden, Utah, where he was born. His higher education began at Weber State University and continued at the University of Utah where, following 3 years studying in the Netherlands, he completed B.A. and Masters Degrees. He earned a doctorate in Germanic and Hispanic studies at the State University of New York in Albany and also studied at universities in California, Switzerland and Spain. He has continued to travel extensively throughout the world, including several stays in foreign countries with the Experiment in International Living as leader of student home placement groups.He studied with Dr. Brewster Ghiselin, at the University of Utah who encouraged Ralph to write and stressed " render, render, render" in order to achieve a "vital fullness". Be sparing yet incisive with language and recounting. An author should convey the greatest meaning through wise choice of words while avoiding verbosity. In reading many postwar German works such as novels by the "Gruppe "47, who formed a group that was always a very loose group, he quickly perceived that the same philosophy prevailed as it did with Hemingway. Words were to be treated with the greatest respect and used sparingly and precisely. Ralph's working life has been devoted to education and supervision in colleges and high schools. For the last 12 years he has been engaged in the evaluation of schools throughout the world. He is fluent in Dutch, German and Spanish, passable in French, dabbles in Italian and Bahasa Indonesian, and is able to utter a few words in other languages. He serves on the Arts and Humanities Committee, as an advisor to the Dean of Humanities at Weber State University and writes articles and reviews as a "guest columnist" from time to time for local newspapers. Ralph and his wife, Judith Howell Vander Heide, last year published with Xlibris,Chris and Louisa,a novel which spans 125 years of Mormonism, polygamy and changes in the church from its founding by Joseph Smith in New York State to the 1960´s. The German Leaves grew out of Ralph´s work for his Ph.D. and focus on German Exilliteratur Exile Literature. Although much work has been done on the subject, both in Germany and the USA, the exile writings are still not widely known, yet the literary production of the exiles comprise some of the most excellent pieces in the history of German literature. Indeed, America has greatly profited by the so-call "brain drain" of men and women writers from Germany and Austria. The German Leaves is a work of devotion to the cause of world peace and the great importance of teaching/enjoying the humanities, in encouraging children to be all they can be, to strive and achieve, but always while considering the rights and respecting the way of life of all humans who share our planet. Persons who have read the manuscript have expressed only words of praise. They agree that they have learned a great deal about a subject they had known nothing or very little about.

Theystarted to creak as they carried their luggage, and all that went through his mind was that they would collapse if he also climbed those steps. Where he came from, all the steps were made of either marble or granite. How in the world would these wooden stairs hold up? Ralph had been surrounded by the unpolluted blue Mediterranean that reflected the ever present blue sky. If the temperature became too hot, he cooled off in that blue water to his heart’s content. Now, in the bowels of the South Bronx, the only thing that turned blue was his demeanor.His only relief from the stifling summer heat, along with some of the boys from the neighborhood, would be to illegallyopen a fire hydrant when the police were not around.

This book presents case studies and empirical data of a phenomenon which increasingly gains popularity in Western societies: deconversion. There is, the authors argue, no better word than deconversion to describe processes of disengagement from religious orientations because these have much in common with conversion. Termination of membership may eventually be the final step of deconversion, but it involves biographical and psychological dynamics which can and need to be reconstructed by qualitative approaches and analyzed by quantitative instruments.In the Bielefeld-based Cross-Cultural Study on Deconversion disengagement processes from a variety of religious backgrounds in the USA and in Germany were examined, ranging from well-established religious organizations to new religious and fundamentalist groups. Nearly 1,200 persons participated in thestudy and were interviewed from 2002 to 2005. In the focus of the study are 100 deconverts from the USA and from Germany who were examined with narrative interviews, faith development interviews and an extensive questionnaire. For case study elaboration, the study followed a research design with an innovative triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data. Four chapters, corresponding to four types of deconversion, present 21 case studies. The highlights of the research project are new data on spirituality – the deconverts in particular appear to prefer a »more spiritual than religious« self-identification – and in-depth analyses of a variety of deconversion narratives with special focus on personality factors, motivation, attitudes, religious development, psychological well-being and growth, religious fundamentalism and right-wing authoritarianism. The results of this project which was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft are of special relevance for counselling and pastoral care, for religious education and for people concerned with administration and management of religious groups and churches, but also for a wider audience interested in contemporary changes in the religious fields in the USA and Germany.
