The nation is safe. Its people are surviving. But at what cost and for how long? Piecing together the remnants of a defunct psychic research program, a brilliant but heinous anti-terrorist group searches for unique candidates, employing a government black ops force to hunt and enlist individuals predisposed with psychic abilities. In pursuit of two very different missing persons, ex-FBI man Kellen Rand and broadcast executive Lorna Novak merge unexpectedly in a race to find answers, revealing difficult truths along the way. As Lorna searches for her abducted twelve-year-old niece, Kellen tracks down a missing Indian Shaman named January, whose exceptional abilities may be the key to saving millions of lives. Trampling civil rights for the sake of the nation’s survival, this “end justifies the means” conspiracy is delicately intertwined with January’s fascination with an elusive hidden relic hidden for centuries somewhere in the San Juan Islands – a relic that may have shocking universal significance. With their paths colliding once more and their lives rapidly transforming, Kellen and Lorna must defeat the veiled, yet powerful schemes of this brewing crisis as scientists prey on the minds of the innocent, archeologists rush to unravel an ancient mystery, and the reader, along with the rest of the world, awaits the startling revelations of The Find.
A deadly virus has broken out in Washington State. The standard procedures of quarantine and prescribed medical therapies have no effect. Victims are dying in only a few days. The same results are spreading throughout the nation, as the CDC begins to discover the terrifying truth: this virus is manmade. Now they must race to learn why this microbe, called a replicator, was specifically created for a human host. The replicator enters cells, kills them, duplicates, and moves on . . . to another host. And twelve cases today will be thirty thousand tomorrow--a replicator run that will put the entire United States at risk for destruction. Devin Parks is a reporter on the edge. Since his marriage crashed, chasing news seems pointless . . . until he realizes the devastating consequence of the outbreak. Devin soon uncovers a conspiracy that reaches from a luxurious corporate boardroom to the Sudan, from the mysteries of microbiology to an assassin’s brutal expertise. But nothing Devin finds prepares him for the roller-coaster horror that is revealed when hopes of an antidote are dashed as nationwide vaccinations begin––the Replicator is more cunning than imagined, because in its nanotechnological genius, its cure is worse than the disease . . .
In this nail-biting political thriller, cinematographer Thane Adams films a documentary in Africa, when he comes across villages where the natives have died en masse. As Ebola and other deadly viruses are discounted as the cause of these mass deaths, Thane’s plans to use his disaster footage on TV news are totally disrupted when thugs posing as CIA agents try to detain him in New York. When Thane finds his publicist murdered and meets Danielle Wilkes, who’s being chased by the same goons, they both realize that they are caught in an overpowering web of conspiracy. The villages in Africa were simply a test––the true purpose of the deadly force––a plot by Muslim Militants who have captured a new technology to destroy cities in the United States. The deadly “city killer bomb” is ironically named “The Dove.” As this prophetic tale continues, one man and one woman battle against an ominous new technology that could kill millions and alter the world balance of power forever. There are 14 days until the ultimate horror is unleashed. The countdown begins––only 14 pivotal, spine-tingling days until the Day of the Dove.
Jace Kelton and Madison Marro are on a parallel quest for answers—answers that others have sought but not survived to tell. Tracking his father’s alleged killer to a doomed Gulf of Mexico oil rig sinking in a hurricane, Jace discovers a bizarre connection with Maddy: both of their parents played pivotal roles in the search for a source of limitless energy to replace fossil fuels. After her only living relative is murdered as part of a cover-up, Maddy is forced to complete her family’s powerful quest for sustainable resources. This family mission pulls Maddy and Jace into a whirlwind race against a ruthless mercenary task force that’s killing everyone in its way to get there first. The relentless competition for energy supremacy crosses continents, touching on legendary mysteries of ancient peoples and enigmatic landmarks, including the Bermuda Triangle, Easter Island, the Pyramids of Giza, and the Nazca Plain. Together, Jace and Maddy explore these wonders of the past that may reveal the answers they've been seeking. With an overwhelming killing force on their heels, they stumble upon a mystical interstellar connection between the energy needs of Earth and the future of all humankind. Time is quickly running out for Jace and Maddy to act—or else a catastrophe more frightening than they could ever dream will devastate the entire globe.

The Spanish language has a long and rich history, from its prehistoric roots to its position today as the mother tongue of nearly 400 million inhabitants of 21 countries. How the language originated, how it evolved, and how it is spoken today around the world makes for a fascinating story that greatly enhances the study of written and spoken Spanish. This Spanish-language text covers the history of Spanish from its pre-Roman and Latin roots to its standardized form and its many regional variations. Along the way, discussion covers the spread of Latin on the Iberian Peninsula, the development of romance dialects due to a number of sociolinguistic influences, and the process of creating a standard variety of Spanish. It concludes with a discussion of the origin and the range of dialects that are spoken across the vast geographical area that forms the Spanish-speaking world. Details of pronunciation, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary are explained in their historical context, giving the student of Spanish a deeper understanding of the language as a whole. Perfect for students of Spanish as well as Spanish-speaking readers seeking to expand their general knowledge of the language, this book also includes a glossary of basic linguistic terms discussed in the text. As the 19th century comes to a close, Friedrich Nietzsche and Vincent van Gogh unknowingly traverse proximate geographical terrain, nearly circling one another like close but distant stars as the philosopher wanders between Nizza, Sils Maria, and Torino, and the painter wanders between Paris, Arles, and Saint-Rémy. In the midst of their philosophical and artistic pursuits, simultaneously, the Eiffel Tower, symbol of artistic progress and industrialization, begins to rise in Paris amidst clamors of protest and praise. Through intertwining letters written to (& sometimes by) friends, family, and others, the philosopher and painter are brought into ever-greater proximity as we witness their daily personal and artistic struggles. Woven between and interrupting this panoply of voices are a series of intervals, short illuminating blasts, like a camera’s exploding flash powder, of artistic, scientific, political, and other events spanning 1888 to 1890, drawing Nietzsche and Van Gogh in and out of the wider expanses of history. As construction of the Eiffel Tower comes to completion in Paris and Elisabeth Förster, the sister of the philosopher of the will to power, tries to found a utopic race colony in South America, the lives of Nietzsche and Van Gogh come to their terrible denouements. Her brother now a full-fledged zombie, the former queen of Nueva Germania seizes the reins of his living corpse and rides him into the future. With no deus ex machina in sight, and none possible, WWI and the terrors and the beauties of the 20th century crack the horizon.
In the context of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) the book offers a timely review of Map Projections. The first chapters are of foundational type. We introduce the mapping from a left Riemann manifold to a right one specified as conformal, equiaerial and equidistant, perspective and geodetic. In particular, the mapping from a Riemann manifold to a Euclidean manifold ("plane") and the design of various coordinate systems are reviewed . A speciality is the treatment of surfaces of Gaussian curvature zero. The largest part is devoted to the mapping the sphere and the ellipsoid-of-revolution to tangential plane, cylinder and cone (pseudo-cone) using the polar aspect, transverse as well as oblique aspect. Various Geodetic Mappings as well as the Datum Problem are reviewed. In the first extension we introduce optimal map projections by variational calculus for the sphere, respectively the ellipsoid generating harmonic maps. The second extension reviews alternative maps for structures , namely torus (pneu), hyperboloid (cooling tower), paraboloid (parabolic mirror), onion shape (church tower) as well as clothoid (Hight Speed Railways) used in Project Surveying. Third, we present the Datum Transformation described by the Conformal Group C10 (3) in a threedimensional Euclidean space , a ten parameter conformal transformation. It leaves infinitesimal angles and distance ratios equivariant. Numerical examples from classical and new map projections as well as twelve appendices document the Wonderful World of Map Projections.
A valuable introduction for newcomers as well as an important reference and source of inspiration for established researchers, this book provides an up-to-date summary of central topics in the field of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and dynamical systems theory.Understanding macroscopic properties of matter starting from microscopic chaos in the equations of motion of single atoms or molecules is a key problem in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Of particular interest both for theory and applications are transport processes such as diffusion, reaction, conduction and viscosity.Recent advances towards a deterministic theory of nonequilibrium statistical physics are summarized: Both Hamiltonian dynamical systems under nonequilibrium boundary conditions and non-Hamiltonian modelings of nonequilibrium steady states by using thermal reservoirs are considered. The surprising new results include transport coefficients that are fractal functions of control parameters, fundamental relations between transport coefficients and chaos quantities, and an understanding of nonequilibrium entropy production in terms of fractal measures and attractors. The theory is particularly useful for the description of many-particle systems with properties in-between conventional thermodynamics and nonlinear science, as they are frequently encountered on nanoscales.

Rainer Eisfeld’s book highlights the merits of socio-historical research into topics infrequently covered by mainstream political science. Directing attention to the need for carefully scrutinizing the convenient “truths” of established - post-Nazi, post-Communist - political narratives, its chapters encourage reflection of the discipline’s history and state of the art. A companion volume to the 2012 book entitled Radical Approaches to Political Science: Roads Less Traveled (also published by Barbara Budrich), this collection is likewise based on an approach to political science informed by a theory of participatory pluralism and grounded in history. The chapters focus on the discipline’s fragmentation and its retreat from public debate; on the varying roles of political science and international relations as champions of more or less democracy; on normative and analytical concepts developed by Hannah Arendt, Klaus von Beyme, and Robert A. Dahl; on the deconstruction of the “Peenemünde Legend” about the unspoiled rule of science at the Third Reich’s missile development center; on reasons for the Peenemünde engineers’ actual complicity in the exploitation of concentration camp labor to mass-produce their V-2 missile. “Rainer Eisfeld’s leadership in the fields of pluralism and analysis of the discipline in the International Political Science Association means that he has quite a background to share with us in this, his most recent, collection of essays.” John Trent

Chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel diseases, and others typically stimulate a systemic response of the entire body. This response has a uniform character in many diseases because common pathways are switched on. The uniform response regulates systemic energy and water provision. However, long-term application of this program leads to typical disease sequelae such as fatigue / depressive symptoms, sleep disturbances, anorexia, malnutrition, muscle wasting – cachexia, cachectic obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, alterations of steroid hormone axes, disturbances of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, elevated sympathetic tone, hypertension, volume expansion, decreased parasympathetic tone, inflammation–related anemia, bone loss, hypercoagulability, circadian rhythms of symptoms, and disease exacerbation by stress . The Origin of Chronic Inflammatory Systemic Diseases and Their Sequelae demonstrates concepts of neuroendocrine immunology, energy and water regulation, and evolutionary medicine in order to show that the uniform response that regulates systemic energy and water provision, has been positively selected for acute physiological responses and short-lived disease states, but is a misguided program in chronic inflammatory diseases and aging. - Offers a broad conceptual framework with a strong clinical link, written in an easy to grasp style and demonstrating the link to aging research - Describes the important principles derived from basic immunology that are used to explain pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory systemic diseases with a focus on autoimmunity - Defines the bioenergetics and energy regulation of the body explaining common response pathways typical for systemic inflammation - Makes use of evolutionary medicine theory to demonstrate the uniformity of the systemic response - Explains the appearance of typical disease sequelae on the basis of the three pillars: neuroendocrine immunology, energy regulation, and evolutionary medicine theory - Contains color figures and tables that explain the field to newcomers

Riesner recognizes a problem in the chronologies proposed in the literature he surveys: often one or two 'absolute dates' are given, and the rest of the chronological details follow from those few established dates. In the next section Riesner seeks to go point-by-point through a chronology of the early ministry of Paul, discussion the evidence at each point for particular events in Paul's life and ministry. He is wary not to merely fit a date into a chronological scheme without providing good support for that date independent of other chronological markers (if possible). Riesner interacts with both conservative and non-conservative literature. The bibliography is massive (80 pages, with approximately 30 sources per page!), and footnotes in the volume indicate that Riesner is, indeed, familiar with the literature.
The name DGGTB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie; German Society for the History and Theory of Biology) reflects recent history as well as German tradition. The Society is a relatively late addition to a series of German societies of science and medicine that began with the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Medizin und der Naturwissenschaften", founded in 1910 by Leipzig University's Karl Sudhoff (1853-1938), who wrote: "We want to establish a, German' society in order to gather German-speaking historians together in our special disciplines so that they form the core of an international society ... ". Yet Sudhoff, at this time of burgeoning academic internationalism, was "quite willing" to accommodate the wishes of a number of founding members and "drop the word German in the title of the Society and have it merge with an international society". The founding and naming of the Society at that time derived from a specific set of historical circumstances, and the same was true some 80 years later when in 1991, in the wake of German reunification, the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie" was founded. From the start, the Society has been committed to bringing studies in the history and philosophy of biology to a wide audience, using for this purpose its Jahrbuch für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie. Parallel to the Jahrbuch, the Verhandlungen zur Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie has become the by now traditional medium for the publication of papers delivered at the Society's annual meetings. In 2005 the Jahrbuch was renamed Annals of the History and Philosophy of Biology, reflecting the Society's internationalist aspirations in addressing comparative biology as a subject of historical and philosophical studies.

Particular emphasis is laid on the mutual dependency of theology and politics in the modern Islamic discourse.
The epoch from the eighth century B.C.E. up to the exile is marked by a great transformation in the society of ancient Judah, as reflected especially in the texts of the pre-exilic prophets. A relatively egalitarian society transforms into a class society, wherein a class of wealthy landowners is opposed to a growing class of impoverished farmers. The main factor in this development is the indebtedness of the farmers. All the forces of society and state are afflicted by this transformation. This book endeavours to describe this transformation as precisely as possible, by examining the prophetical texts , and other biblical and epigraphical materials. Unlike the theories of "annuity capitalism" or "antique development" the work especially stresses the role of the state and its organs in this transformation.
Navigating the Spanish Lake examines Spain’s long presence in the Pacific Ocean (1521–1898) in the context of its global empire. Building on a growing body of literature on the Atlantic world and indigenous peoples in the Pacific, this pioneering book investigates the historiographical “Spanish Lake” as an artifact that unites the Pacific Rim (the Americas and Asia) and Basin (Oceania) with the Iberian Atlantic. Incorporating an impressive array of unpublished archival materials on Spain’s two most important island possessions (Guam and the Philippines) and foreign policy in the South Sea, the book brings the Pacific into the prevailing Atlanticentric scholarship, challenging many standard interpretations. By examining Castile’s cultural heritage in the Pacific through the lens of archipelagic Hispanization, the authors bring a new comparative methodology to an important field of research. The book opens with a macrohistorical perspective of the conceptual and literal Spanish Lake. The chapters that follow explore both the Iberian vision of the Pacific and indigenous counternarratives; chart the history of a Chinese mestizo regiment that emerged after Britain’s occupation of Manila in 1762-1764; and examine how Chamorros responded to waves of newcomers making their way to Guam from Europe, the Americas, and Asia. An epilogue analyzes the decline of Spanish influence against a backdrop of European and American imperial ambitions and reflects on the legacies of archipelagic Hispanization into the twenty-first century. Specialists and students of Pacific studies, world history, the Spanish colonial era, maritime history, early modern Europe, and Asian studies will welcome Navigating the Spanish Lake as a persuasive reorientation of the Pacific in both Iberian and world history.

Climate change is expected to affect the exchange of gases between forest ecosystems and the atmosphere. In this review, we focus on a few related topics, including the emission of greenhouse gases from the forest floor, and vegetation fires and their impact on air quality and soil CO2 efflux. In particular, we summarise the current state of knowledge on O3 deposition in forest ecosystems, both for stomatal uptake and non-stomatal sinks. Based on such summaries, we discuss interactions between forests, atmospheric composition and climate, and finally outline directions for multi- and interdisciplinary research required for mechanistically understanding such interrelationships.
In this in-depth analysis of artistic and academic lectures and performances, Lucia Rainer features an innovative conceptual and methodological tool that augments Goffman's Frame Analysis with a praxeological perspective. This way, she gives profound insight into how knowledge - as a practice and a concept - is associated with clarity rather than truth. Based on four case studies - including John Cage's unpublished and unabridged audio recording of Lecture on Nothing - the study explores how the concept of lecture performances, which adheres to two frames that never entirely blend, provides a space to (re-)negotiate the artistic-academic relationship.
This classic book provides a rigorous treatment of the Riesz?Fredholm theory of compact operators in dual systems, followed by a derivation of the jump relations and mapping properties of scalar and vector potentials in spaces of continuous and H?lder continuous functions. These results are then used to study scattering problems for the Helmholtz and Maxwell equations. Readers will benefit from a full discussion of the mapping properties of scalar and vector potentials in spaces of continuous and H?lder continuous functions, an in-depth treatment of the use of boundary integral equations to solve scattering problems for acoustic and electromagnetic waves, and an introduction to inverse scattering theory with an emphasis on the ill-posedness and nonlinearity of the inverse scattering problem.
An artist both of and before his time: The Old Master who ushered in the modern era Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), one of Spain's most revered and controversial painters, is known for his intense, chilling, and sometimes grotesque paintings depicting the injustice of society with brutal sincerity. A court painter to the Spanish crown, he captured, through his works, a snapshot of life in Spain in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Coming at the tail end of the Old Masters period, Goya, with his audacious, subversive, and highly influential works, can be considered the first painter of the modern era. His influence can be seen in the works of artists as varied as Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon. About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions.
Vatican II profoundly changed the outlook and the message of the Catholic Church. After decades, if not centuries, in which Catholic public opinion appeared to be primarily oriented towards the distant past and bygone societal models, suddenly the Catholic Church embraced the world as it was, and it joined in the struggle to create a radiant future. The Sixties were a time of great socio-cultural and political ferment in Europe as a whole. Especially the second half of the 1960s and the first half of the 1970s witnessed an astounding range of 'new' and 'old' social movements reaching for the sky. Catholic activists provided fuel to the fire in more ways than one. Catholics had embarked on the quest for new horizons for some years prior to the sudden growth of secular activism in and around the magic year of 1968. When secular radicals joined up with Catholic activists, a seemingly unstoppable dynamic was unleashed. This book covers five crucial contributions by Catholic communities to the burgeoning atmosphere of those turbulent years: a) the theological innovations of Vatican II, which made such an unprecedented engagement of Catholics possible in the first place, but also post-conciliar theological developments; b) the resurgence of the worker priest experiment, and the first-ever creation of autonomous organisations of radical parish priests; c) the simultaneous creation of grassroots organisations - base communities - by (mostly) lay activists across the continent; d) the crucial roles of Catholic students in the multiform student movements shaping Europe in these years; e) the indispensable contributions of Catholic workers who helped shape - and often initiated - the wave of militant contestations shaking up labour relations after 1968.
Group theory appears to be a promising source of hard computational problems for deploying new cryptographic constructions. This reference focuses on the specifics of using groups, including in particular non-Abelian groups, in the field of cryptography. It provides an introduction to cryptography with emphasis on the group theoretic perspective, making it one of the first books to use this approach. The authors provide the needed cryptographic and group theoretic concepts, full proofs of essential theorems, and formal security evaluations of the cryptographic schemes presented. They also provide references for further reading and exercises at the end of each chapter.
Solid Waste Landfilling: Concepts, Processes, Technology provides information on technologies that promote stabilization and minimize environmental impacts in landfills. As the main challenges in waste management are the reduction and proper treatment of waste and the appropriate use of waste streams, the book satisfies the needs of a modern landfill, covering waste pre-treatment, in situ treatment, long-term behavior, closure, aftercare, environmental impact and sustainability. It is written for practitioners who need specific information on landfill construction and operation, but is also ideal for those concerned about the possible return of these sites to landscapes and their subsequent uses for future generations. - Includes input by international contributors from a vast number of disciplines - Provides worldwide approaches and technologies - Showcases the interdisciplinary nature of the topic - Focuses on sustainability, covering the lifecycle of landfills under the concept of minimizing environmental impact - Presents knowledge of the legal framework and economic aspects of landfilling
This book provides a comprehensive treatment of assignment problems from their conceptual beginnings in the 1920s through present-day theoretical, algorithmic, and practical developments. The revised reprint provides details on a recent discovery related to one of Jacobi's results, new material on inverse assignment problems and quadratic assignment problems, and an updated bibliography. The authors have organized the book into 10 self-contained chapters to make it easy for readers to use the specific chapters of interest to them without having to read the book linearly. The topics covered include bipartite matching algorithms, linear assignment problems, quadratic assignment problems, multi-index assignment problems, and many variations of these problems. Exercises in the form of numerical examples provide readers with a method of self-study or students with homework problems, and an associated webpage offers applets that readers can use to execute some of the basic algorithms as well as links to computer codes that are available online. Researchers will benefit from the book's detailed exposition of theory and algorithms related to assignment problems, including the basic linear sum assignment problem and its many variations. Practitioners will learn about practical applications of the methods, the performance of exact and heuristic algorithms, and software options. This book also can serve as a text for advanced courses in discrete mathematics, integer programming, combinatorial optimization, and algorithmic computer science.
