Historically, though, observers have argued that Indian politics is non-ideological in nature. The Limits of Orientalism: Seventeenth-Century Representations of India challenges recent postcolonial readings of European, and particularly English, representations of India in the seventeenth century. The book critiques Edward Said's discourse of 'Orientalism' by destabilizing the notion of a homogeneous 'West': the English interest was commercial, unlike the colonially and religiously motivated Portuguese, and therefore instead of representing Mughals as barbaric 'others,' the English travelers drew parallels between the Mughals and themselves in their writings, associating with them as partners in trade and potential allies in war. The Europeans praised Muslims' civility and religious tolerance, yet tended to be more conflicted with the Hindus, but eventually their negative views underwent a transformation, questioning the Orientalist notion of the homogeneous 'Indian.' By historicizing the European representations of India, the book undercuts postcolonial analyses by critics such as Kate Teltscher, Jyotsna Singh, Nandini Bhattacharya, Balachandra Rajan, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Shankar Raman and others.

The weak property rights regime governing the world's marine resources as well as the wide-spread large scale subsidization of the fisheries industry has led to serious depletion of global fish stocks. Against this backdrop, taking cognizance of developing country goals and concerns, the Fourth Ministerial Conference of the WTO held in Doha in 2001 mandated that negotiations over fisheries subsidies, formerly subject to the disciplines of the Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures, be completed by 2005. In view of this development, a country like India with its vast and versatile fisheries resources has to take stock of the state of its fisheries sector, and develop a strategic response to the global debate on fisheries subsidies. This book aims to initiate that process. It begins by providing an overview of the current state of subsidization of the fisheries sector, both domestic and international, under various alternate definitions of fisheries subsidies. It then focuses on the domestic scenario, highlighting the Indian experience with fisheries subsidies and property rights regimes across both inland and marine sectors via the case method, and investigates the necessity and sufficiency of subsidies vis-à-vis an appropriate property rights framework in developing the domestic fisheries sector and resource base in a sustainable manner. Attention is then turned to the international scenario, with a review of selected international case studies which can inform domestic subsidy and property rights issues. This is followed by an analysis of the country submissions of the various major fishing nations in order to identify India's natural allies and competitors in international negotiations. The concluding chapter brings the pieces together. It first outlines a program of reforms to rectify the deficiencies in the existing domestic property rights and fisheries subsidy regimes, on the basis of intensive interactions with all sectoral stakeholders. Subsequently, it suggests negotiating strategies for India in forthcoming WTO meetings. An epilogue sums up recent developments and issues.

The third part of the book gives cautionary lessons in managing seva projects across the world. The fourth part of the book gives theoretical aspects of seva, which include social networks in management of complex missionary projects, the use of social networking technology in the promotion and scaling up of complex global health initiatives, the growing phenomenon of voluntourism and Distance Learning. Our case histories represent a variety of situations across continents. Having initiated and carried these projects from scratch to fruition has given us an insight into the many issues others may face when they initiate their own projects. We experienced frustration at many points in the trajectory of our projects; however, we persevered and perhaps achieved modest success. We should confess that we thought of abandoning and giving up at multiple stages of our projects, however, we were reminded of the beneficiaries and continued against many odds and obstacles. Some of these could have been prevented but others were inevitable.
