Eighteenth-century France is understood to have been the dominant cultural power on that era’s international scene. Considering the emblematic case of the theater, Rahul Markovits goes beyond the idea of "French Europe" to offer a serious consideration of the intentions and goals of those involved in making this so. Drawing on extensive archival research, Staging Civilization reveals that between 1670 and 1815 at least twenty-seven European cities hosted resident theater troupes composed of French actors and singers who performed French-language repertory. By examining the presence of French companies of actors in a wide set of courts and cities throughout Europe, Markovits uncovers the complex mechanisms underpinning the dissemination of French culture. The book ultimately offers a revisionist account of the traditional Europe française thesis, engaging topics such as transnational labor history, early-modern court culture and republicanism, soft power, and cultural imperialism.
Indian screw pine family Pandanaceae represents three genera, in which genus Pandanus and Benstonea are distributed in two hotspots in India – the Western Ghats and the Northeast Himalayan region. For the first time, Indian Pandanaceae has been assessed for its taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationship. The extensive survey by the authors led to the discovery of three new Pandanus species (two from the Western Ghats and one from the Northeast Himalaya). The present taxonomic revision confirmed total number of Pandanus species to 14 that are distributed in the Southern India (9 species) and Northeast Himalayan region (5 species). Genus Benstonea is represented by two species, one from Southern India and another species common to both regions. A detailed species identification key is given along with conservation status of each species following IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (2001). The study revealed that, out of 16 Pandanus and Benstonea species, six species are under threatened categories. In recent years, a chloroplast DNA-based molecular phylogenetic approach has been followed to understand the evolutionary relationship among the plant species. The interrelationship among the 14 Pandanus species at infrageneric level has been worked out using this approach, which has led to the rearrangement of some species to the subgenera proposed by Stone (1974). Moreover, the close relationship between Pandanus and Benstonea has been confirmed and the interrelationship of Indian Pandanus genus in global context is given. This book also describes the economic importance of each Pandanus species.

The Europeans praised Muslims' civility and religious tolerance, yet tended to be more conflicted with the Hindus, but eventually their negative views underwent a transformation, questioning the Orientalist notion of the homogeneous 'Indian.' By historicizing the European representations of India, the book undercuts postcolonial analyses by critics such as Kate Teltscher, Jyotsna Singh, Nandini Bhattacharya, Balachandra Rajan, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Shankar Raman and others.

Debris disks are optically thin circumstellar disks around mainsequence stars, comprised of micron-sized grains. The dust is generated from destructive collisions of planetesimals, induced from gravitational perturbations by large planets. Debris disks can as signposts for planetary systems, through which, a universal picture can be obtained that encompasses the evolution and architecture of the Solar System's own dust disk and planetary system. The dust in these disks can be detected by their thermal infrared flux, measured as an excess above the photospheric emission. Dust at different circumstellar locations, inferred from the peak wavelength of the detected emission, can act as a probe for local dynamical activity in the system. Over the last thirty years, cold disks, analogous to the Kuiper Belt, have constituted the bulk of debris disk detections. Warm disks, analogous to the Main Asteroid belt, can act as signposts for dynamical activity in the terrestrial planet zone, but are rare in contrast. The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) space telescope mapped the entire sky in two near-IR and two mid-IR bands in 2012. The two mid-IR bands are well placed to probe dust emission in the terrestrial planet zone of these stars, at sensitivities greater than the last all-sky IR survey in 1983. WISE also provides us for the first time an opportunity to contemporaneously measure the photospheric and IR excess wavelengths of the entire sky, increasing sensitivity to fainter levels of dust. In this thesis, I present an unbiased survey of warm disks around main-sequence Hipparcos stars in the solar neighborhood, detected using data from the WISE All-Sky Database. Our series of surveys builds upon each other to find previously undetected faint, warm debris disks by including bright photometrically saturated stars in WISE, using empirical photospheric colors, removing several non-trivial false-positive sources, and verifying and validating these detected excesses. This thesis adds a substantial number of new disk targets to the census of debris disks, as well as an assessment of the incidence rate of WISE disks in the solar neighborhood. The number and rate of detections can ultimately aid in enhancing our understanding of the formation and evolution of planetary systems.
