Thousands of Jews decided to teach the anti-Semitic bullies a lesson and make it very clear that shedding Jewish blood would not go unpunished, that Jews were no longer passive victims. The central role that the State of Israel and its envoys played in organizing, instructing, and training self-defense activists highlights the special ties between Israel and the Jewish Diaspora. Based on more than 120 interviews with former activists of self-defense, ex-Mossad officers and veteran Israeli diplomats, as well as on archival research, this is a pioneering study on ethnicity and diaspora in a time of growing political violence in South America. For those who lived through it -- whether on the bloody battlefields of Spain, in its hungry and war-stricken cities, or through the lens of newsreels and solidarity campaigns -- the Spanish Civil War was a life changing event. In a century rife with "total" wars, the events that took place in Spain between the years 1936-1939 still echo loudly. Raanan Geberers New York-based "The Diner Under the El," however, shines the spotlight on people usually ignored in fiction. "The Diner Under the El" takes place from 1987 to 1991, and focuses on three young Jewish men in their mid-thirties from the Pelham Parkway neighborhood of the north Bronx, N.Y. Every week, they go to singles events, and afterward, they meet at the "diner under the el" to commiserate. Change inevitably comes to their lives. One loses himself in ultra-right-wing conspiracy theories and sadistic sexual fantasies; the second, a would-be rock musician, sees his paste-up job becoming rapidly obsolete; and the third finds salvation with an off-beat woman who introduces him to poetry, New Age mysticism and pop psychology, with hilarious results.
