The paper hired a number of correspondents at the time to cover local news and events in the small towns around Nashua. I reported on the selectmen’s meetings and the planning board meetings in Mason and Greenville and the Mascenic School Board. The editors encouraged us to write special features about people, places, and events.

These executive branch “judicial” tribunals are surrogate courts and together comprise a little-known system of administrative justice that annually makes hundreds of thousands of contentious, life-altering judicial decisions concerning the everyday rights of both individuals and businesses. This book demonstrates that, except perhaps in Quebec, the executive branch’s administrative justice system is a justice system in name only. Failing to conform to rule-of-law principles or constitutional norms, its judicial tribunals are neither independent nor, in law, impartial and are only providentially competent. Unjust by Design describes a system in transcendent need of major restructuring. Written by a respected critic, it presents a modern theory of administrative justice fit for that purpose. It also provides detailed blueprints for the changes the author believes would be necessary if justice were to in fact assume its proper role in Canada’s administrative justice system.

During the worst years of apartheid, the most popular show on television in South Africa—among both Black and White South Africans—was The Cosby Show. Why did people living under a system built on the idea that Black people were inferior and threatening flock to a show that portrayed African Americans as comfortably mainstream? Starring Mandela and Cosby takes up this paradox, revealing the surprising impact of television on racial politics. The South African government maintained a ban on television until 1976, and according to Ron Krabill, they were right to be wary of its potential power. The medium, he contends, created a shared space for communication in a deeply divided nation that seemed destined for civil war along racial lines. At a time when it was illegal to publish images of Nelson Mandela, Bill Cosby became the most recognizable Black man in the country, and, Krabill argues, his presence in the living rooms of white South Africans helped lay the groundwork for Mandela’s release and ascension to power. Weaving together South Africa’s political history and a social history of television, Krabill challenges conventional understandings of globalization, offering up new insights into the relationship between politics and the media.

This is the last installment in a trilogy about my hometown's involvement in our country's mid-twentieth-century wars. I researched the pages of the Nashua Telegraph from 1060 through 1973, looking for names, leads, and stories about local men and women who participated in America's most contentious war. The paper published news and features from Derry/Salem, east of Nashua, west to Jaffrey/Rindge, and north to New Boston. The Nashua Telegraph also covered Tyngsboro, Pepperell, and Dunstable, Massachusetts. Sadly, times for newspapers have changed, and the Telegraph has a much-reduced coverage area.
