This is a history of the Soviet airline that, in the latter 1960s, became the biggest in the world, measured by passenger boardings and passenger-miles flown. Most of this air traffic was on the vast and complex domestic network, many of whose sub-divisions alone would equate in size to a very large airline. Most of the domestic passengers have flown at very cheap fares, in the aerial equivalent of long-distance bus services, almost as a public utility. The extent of the achievement in bringing the benefits of air transport to more than 3,500 communities, otherwise dependent upon long and arduous surface transport, often over long distances, has not been generally realized. Neither have the pioneering efforts of Aeroflot been fully recognized in the West, nor have the enterprising efforts of its Polar Aviation affiliate been fully remembered. The trans-Polar flights of Chkalov and Gomov are a distant memory. This has resulted partly from the extreme difficulty in obtaining information from behind what was once described as the Iron Curtain. Until Mikhail Gorbachev swept restrictions aside with his policies of glasnost and perestroika, the sparse data available gave only a sporadic glimpse of Aeroflots work. This book now offers a panorama of the seventy years of considerable and continuous achievement. It records the development of the world's first transport aircraft in 1913, the first bomber/transport to be put into series production, the world's first sustained jet airline service and the world's largest turboprop airliner. It describes the world's largest helicopters and the world's largest cargo jet aircraft. At the other end of the scale of magnitude, Aeroflot operates about 2,500 of the diminutive piston-engined biplane which is the world's most produced commercial transport aircraft in history. As this book is published, the former Soviet airline is undergoing a metamorphosis. But nothing can erase the fascination of Aeroflot's historical record -- and incidentally, it is a great story.
In this, the seventieth anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's epoch-making flight of 1927, Paladwr Press marks the event with one of its books, in the style which has hitherto been restricted in subject material to the histories of various airlines. We did this not because anything new needed to be said about a man who was possibly the greatest pilot, measured by his achievements, in aviation history; but because we felt that too much emphasis has in the past been placed on that astonishing New York-Paris nonstop flight & not enough on his other accomplishments in the air. His solid planning work for the great airlines Pan American & T.W.A. has almost been forgotten. His campaigning to popularize flying, by taking his Spirit of St. Louis to every one of the 48 States is remembered only sporadically. In some otherwise authoritative books on his life, Charles & Anne Lindberg's flights around the northern Pacific & both the northern & southern perimeters of the Atlantic Oceans have been given insufficient emphasis. In our book we have tried to restore the balance & at the same time to draw attention to the considerable lifetime achievement by some detailed maps that support the narrative & by Mike Machat's customarily superb drawings of the most important aircraft associated with the great flights. We have described briefly his early life & the disciplined & largely self-taught training that made him into such an extraordinary aviator. We have not forgotten either that, in addition to the work for expanding the scope of air transport, he did an enormous amount of flying for pleasure & for other business-associated reasons. Also, during the Second World War, he crossed the Pacific once again, & did some imaginative flying & constructive analysis, in the face of the enemy. This book concentrates on Charles Lindbergh the pilot, & we have touched only marginally on other aspects of his life. But we could not ignore reference to his child's kidnapping; nor his involvement with the isolationist movement in the United States in the immediate pre-war years. This latter could not be passed over as if it was unimportant, & we trust that readers will feel we have dealt fairly with this controversial episode in a truly eventful career. Most of all, we hope that they will be entertained with a Lindbergh life presented in a manner that is both visually pleasing yet at the same time factually informative.
Since the dramatic flight by "Chuck" Yeager in 1947, when an aircraft first exceeded the speed of sound, the dream of a successful supersonic airliner has captivated the interest of many manufacturers & of many governments. This book, written by an experienced analyst who spent most of his career in commercial airline market research & traffic forecasting, explodes the myth. The analysis draws upon known facts, applies simple arithmetic & makes assumptions that are based on technical, operational & commercial sense.

Reg Adkins was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1926, went to Inglewood State School and after three years at Guildford Grammar School completed his education at the age of 16. From the time he was 11 years old his ambition was to be a pilot. Joining the RAAF in October 1944 he was too late for pilot training but spent four and a half years as an Armourer in the service he loved. Learning to fly at the Royal Aero Club of W.A. at Maylands Aerodrome in 1948 was the first step up the ladder towards achieving his ambition. Following an instructor rating and employment at the club for eighteen months he was well on his way when he stepped out of a Tiger Moth into a DC-3 to become one of the first post-war Aero Club trained pilots to be accepted into the airlines. In 1955 he joined MacRobertson Miller Airlines. After a career spanning 33 years, flying DC-3s, F.27s and F.28s all over W.A. and the Northern Territory and amassing a total of 21,000 hours he retired in 1986 at the top of the ladder as Senior Captain.
