Scientific Study from the year 2011 in the subject Chemistry - Macromolecular Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Gurukula Kangri University (Department of Chemistry), course: Ph.D., language: English, abstract: The micellar properties of cationic dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) in aqueous media in the presence of 15-crown-5ether (CR) have been investigated by conductivity measurements over the temperature range 288.15-308.15 K. The results of the ternary DTAC/CR/W system were analysed in comparison with the reported results of binary DTAC/W system. The critical aggregation concentration (cac) and degree of ionization of the micelles were determined from the conductivity measurements at different temperatures. Thermodynamic parameters for the micellar system were estimated by applying the charged pseudo-phase separation model. Micellisation was found to be spontaneous and entropy-driven.

The author believes that human mind is very fertile and capable of wildest imagination. There is no dearth of books with fictitious stories showing flight of human mind conceiving weird objects and incidents which never happened and may never happen. Time machine was conceived decades back. Rockets and satellites were invented by human mind much before they became reality. However, many incidents in real life are so strange and unique that they surpass the wildest human imagination and fiction. It is with a view to record one such subjective experience that the authorhas embarked upon this modest attempt at English prose. Master of Larceny is the true story of a perverted genius who joined the Indian Air Force sometime in 1965-66 and was arrested, tried by Court Martial, convicted of a series of thefts and incarcerated in 1970-71. All material facts stated in the book are true and authentic. However, some names have been changed to protect the identity of the person where required and minor details may be inaccurate due to lapse of time and memory. The author was intimately connected with the successful investigation of the entire case and prosecution of the culprits. He was commended by the Air Officer Commanding in Chief, Maintenance Command, IAF for tracking and running down the Master of Larceny and his gang. Therefore while some minor inaccuracies in matters of detail cannot be ruled out due to lapse of time, the veracity of all material facts is guaranteed. Agriculture is the main occupation in India and about 75% of its population depends directly or indirectly on agriculture for their livelihood. It is the dominant sector that contributes 18% of the gross domestic product. Thus, agriculture is the foundation of the Indian economy. This can be done by increasing crop production to match the population growth rate of 2. 2% per annum, which is expected to stabilize at 1. 53 billion around 2050. There is no doubt that the Green Revolution in India during the late 1960s brought self-sufficiency in food grain production, mainly through the increase in rice and wheat crop yields – the two main crops of the country which play an important role from food security point of view. However, the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, and the neglect of organic manures for these crops, has resulted in the deterioration of physical, chemical and biological health of the ri- and wheat-growing soils. Owing to the deterioration of the health of these soils, the productivity of the rice–wheat cropping system has now either got reduced or in some places has become constant for the last decade.

This framework document provides a pragmatic approach for designing representative studies and developing uniform sampling guidelines to support estimates of morbidity that are explicitly linked to exposure to land-based contaminants from small-scale artisanal gold mining activities. A primary goal is to support environmental burden of disease evaluations, which attempt to attribute health outcomes to specific sources of pollution. The guidelines provide recommendations on the most appropriate and cost-effective sampling and analysis methods to ensure the collection of representative population-level data, sample size recommendations for each contaminant and environmental media, biological sampling data, household survey data, and health outcome data. This framework focuses on small-scale artisanal gold mining (ASGM) activities that are known to use and generate mercury (Hg) as well as other metals, such as arsenic (As) and lead (Pb), depending on the specific ores being mined. A particular concern with Hg is the conversion to methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic environments, leading to bioaccumulation and biomagnification in fish that may be locally consumed. Exposure to Hg, MeHg, and Pb are strongly associated with neurodevelopmental health outcomes in children. Exposure to Hg and MeHg are also associated with neurological illnesses in adults. Exposures to Pb are associated with renal outcomes in children and adults, and cardiovascular outcomes in adults. Exposure to As are associated with neurodevelopmental health outcomes in children, arsenicosis and skin disorders in children and adults, and potential cancers in adults, including skin, bladder, and lung. The primary objective of this framework is to guide research to assess the relationship between environmental contamination, exposures, and health outcomes related to a subset of contaminants originating from ASGM activities for particularly vulnerable populations (such as children) and the general population within a single household in the vicinity of ASGM sites in low- and medium-income countries. To achieve this objective, biomonitoring and health outcome data are linked to household survey and environmental data (for example, soil, dust, water, agricultural products, fish) at the individual level from an exposed population compared to individuals from an unexposed (reference) population. Data on exposures and health outcomes in the same individual across a representative set of individuals is required to support an understanding of the potential impact of ASGM activities on local populations. These guidelines can also assist in building local capacity to conduct environmental assessments following a consistent methodology to facilitate comparability across ASGM sites in different geographic areas. Sampling strategies and methods are prioritized given information needs, resource availability, and other constraints or considerations. The framework includes a number of supporting appendixes that provide additional resources and references on relevant topics.
