Over the last 15 years, high-performance liquid chromatogra phy (LC) has made the transition from an instrument used only by experts in research labs to a tool used for routine applications by relatively unskilled workers. With this transition have come in instrumentation and column technology. In major advances the past, the operator had to be a jack-of-all-trades, with a screw driver, soldering iron, and various wrenches as constant compan ions in the LC lab. Today, many instruments contain micropro cessors as powerful as those of mainframe computers of earlier days. With this technology has come a variety of self-diagnostic tools that allow the LC system to locate many of its own prob lems. Traditionally, well-honed LC troubleshooting skills have been a result of years of work at the bench. Today the LC system itself often can do a better job of troubleshooting than the operator can. Yet many of the problems of the past are still the major problems of today: air bubbles, check valves, detector lamps, and, of course, problems with the separation. An added pressure on the operator of today's LC system is that of productivity-the lab often cannot afford unnecessary downtime. This means that the operator has to be a troubleshooting expert, or has to have that expertise at his or her fingertips. The present book was written to provide this expertise in an easy-to-use format for users at all levels of experience.

While White parents raising Black children has become increasingly salient in the last 20?30 years, the experience of those who grow up in these cross?racial families is much more complicated. Indeed, much of the adoption studies literature has privileged White parent voices, further silencing crossracially raised Black?identified children. “Is That Your Mom?” challenges the dominant narrative that love trumps race (and racism) in family dynamics, and reasserts the need for critical voices of those most impacted by being cross?racially raised: the very people who face extreme racism that is both similar to, and uniquely different from, that faced by people of color more broadly. “Is That Your Mom?” centers the voices of Cross Racially Raised individuals of the African Diaspora to illustrate that racial socialization is a process in which individuals have agency in their racial development. In this book, Cross Racially Raised adults, both those who were adopted and those who were raised in cross?racial birth families, share their stories regarding experiences with racism in the following three ways: (1) encounters with racism within and beyond educational settings, (2) perceptions of parents or guardians’ efforts toward racial socialization, and (3) strategies used to navigate racially hostile environments (which sometimes are the families themselves). The voices of the individuals in this book illuminate a deeper conceptual understanding of how racial socialization practices are linked with one’s ability to cope with racism and ways of addressing racism, particularly among those families that contradict monoracial assumptions of racial socialization processes. The book concludes with a discussion of how schools, educators, and parents can help Cross Racially Raised children and youth develop skills necessary to cope and remain resilient in the face of racism, particularly if the immediate family is not offering those supports.

For men and women who could not risk revealing their inner lives to those around them, this art of incommunicativity was crucial, both personally and politically. The 'rediscovery' in sixteenth-century Italy of Aristotle's Poetics marks a crucial moment in the development of Western thought about literature, for the flood of new and controversial works that accompanied this event laid the foundations of modern literary criticism and theory. This is a study of the main literary theories of the late Italian Renaissance that seek to define a poetics of dialogue. The author contends that dialogue - among the most popular of all prose forms in Italy to develop a new theory of literature, because it seems to subvert the conventional Renaissance understanding of what is 'literary' and what is not. With its close ties to dialectic and to Platonic philosophy on the one hand, and its equally vital links to imaginative fiction on the other, dialogue in the Renaissance stands at the crossroads of the discourses of cognition and fiction. Writing the Scene of Speaking examines the different solutions offered by sixteenth-century Italian theorists to the problem posed by the hybrid textuality of dialogue, and sets them in the context of a culture in a dramatic state of transition.
