The Conservation of Orbital Symmetry examines the principle of conservation of orbital symmetry and its use. The central content of the principle was that reactions occur readily when there is congruence between orbital symmetry characteristics of reactants and products, and only with difficulty when that congruence does not obtain—or to put it more succinctly, orbital symmetry is conserved in concerted reaction. This principle is expected to endure, whatever the language in which it may be couched, or whatever greater precision may be developed in its application and extension. The book opens with a review of the elementary aspects of the molecular orbital theory of bonding. This is followed by separate chapters on correlation diagrams, the conservation of orbital symmetry, theory of electrocyclic reactions, theory of cycloadditions and cycloreversions, and theory of sigmatropic reactions. Subsequent chapters deal with group transfers and eliminations; secondary conformational effects in concerted cycloaddition reactions; and generalized selection rules for pericyclic reactions.

Cohesive Profiling provides one of the first linguistic descriptions of blog discourse, focusing on the cohesive relations which enable users to construe blogs as compatible meaningful wholes. With a corpus-based analysis of cohesive relations in personal blogs, the study surprisingly reveals that there is only limited cohesive rapport between the textual contributions of blog authors and readers. The book retraces blogs’ technological, linguistic and generic evolution and describes how today’s blog genres are structured and composed. Additionally, it is shown how cohesive interaction, shared knowledge and technological expertise converge in blog readers trying to keep track of blog topics, purposes and identities over time. The book is of interest to researchers in discourse analysis, corpus linguistics and pragmatics as well as to scholars working in the field of computer-mediated communication.

When Kanga, a young, slightly immature but very capable warrior of the Katongo tribe, kidnaps Toma, a maiden of the Kandu, he sets the surrounding countryside in turmoil. Kanga ends up in Balooban territory where he is pursued by the girlas father and several other men of her tribe. Their presence becomes known to the Balooban chief, Lasomba, who takes up the pursuit. Into the mix comes the Gabol tribe, plus some members of Kangaas own tribe, who are searching for him. They all come together for a surprising but logical ending. Part Two brings the Arab slave raiders from the northern desert. They raid the Kandu village and kidnap three young girls. Part Three brings about the war that everyone dreads. Revenge-seeking King Shooga turns his Balooban armies loose on the small northern tribes.
